New Leak Hints At Sony Xperia XZ4 Design, Dual Front Cameras

A new video leak that recently emerged online shows what's alleged to be a protective film designed for the display of the Sony Xperia XZ4. The component suggests Sony's upcoming Android flagship will have an elongated screen which recent rumors described as a 21:9 affair. Unlike the flagship products offered by the company's rivals, the Xperia XZ4 will not have a screen notch and will instead have a more conventional bezel which will be relatively slim and feature two front-facing cameras, according to the new leak.

Background: Several renders and case leaks previously supplied some information about the design of the Sony Xperia XZ4. One recent leak indicated the smartphone will feature a 6.55-inch display with an aspect ratio of 21:9 manufactured by LG Display. The longer aspect ratio of the smartphone's screen is comparable to the image formats used in feature films. However, there is little information about the display technology that Sony will use for the Xperia XZ4, although the tech firm previously commercialized a P-OLED panel with handset's predecessor, the Xperia XZ3. Earlier reports also mention that the Xperia XZ4 will feature a 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, a connector that was absent from the company's flagship products since it adopted the Ambient Flow design language starting with the Xperia XZ2 launched this February. The upcoming device will also reportedly include three rear cameras, as well as a side-mounted fingerprint sensor sandwiched between its volume rocker and power button.

Earlier leaks also supplied a number of details about the hardware features of the Xperia XZ4. The handset is expected to feature the Snapdragon 855 chipset from Qualcomm, a cutting-edge piece of silicon with an octa-core Kryo 485 CPU running at a maximum clock speed of 2.84GHz, as well as the Adreno 640 GPU. The said SoC also boasts an improved Computer Vision image signal processors meant to improve the overall quality of mobile photography and a fourth-generation artificial intelligence (AI) engine for on-device AI computing said to be up to three times as fast as the module used by the Snapdragon 845. Recent leaks also suggest that the Xperia XZ4 will have 6GB of RAM and will be available in two hardware variants that may include either 64GB or 256GB of internal flash storage. A 3,900mAh battery is rumored to be part of the package as well.

The handset will likely ship with the latest version of the Android operating system, Android 9 Pie. This version of the Android OS brings new features like Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness. These functionalities should allow the Xperia XZ4 to offer significantly better battery life than its predecessor by leveraging the power of Google's machine learning. Consumers still shouldn't expect stock Android as Sony has been working on a custom implementation of the new OS version for the better part of this year.

Impact: The latest leak indicates that the Xperia XZ4 will utilize a design that stands out from the competition by avoiding a display notch, with the rumored return of a 3.5mm headphone jack being another against-the-grain feature of the upcoming Android flagship. Whether that ends up being enough for Sony's mobile division to reclaim some of the commercial memomentum it lost over the last several years remains to be seen, though the wait likely won't be too long as the Xperia XZ4 is expected to be officially announced at MWC 2019 which is scheduled to start on February 25.
