Things won’t improve for Samsung’s mobile division next quarter but this is how it will respond

Samsung doesn’t provide shipment figures for smartphones in its quarterly earnings releases so it’s unknown precisely how many units the company has shipped in the second quarter of this year. We will soon see estimates from industry trackers, though. The company today reported its earnings for Q2 2017 . It has seen strong sales throughout the quarter which is the why the mobile business has brought in 30.01 trillion won ($26.9 billion) in revenue. However, Samsung’s profit margins have taken a hit. The division’s operating profit for the quarter came in at 4.06 trillion won ($3.6 billion) as opposed to 4.32 trillion won ($3.8 billion) in Q2 2016. The Galaxy S8 was Samsung’s flagship product throughout the quarter and the company says that it saw strong sales of both models . The Galaxy S8 might actually have played a big role in generating a big chunk of the profits because Samsung’s affordable options have taken a hit. Samsung mentions in its earnings release that even though it

Galaxy Tab A 9.7 spotted running Android 7.0 Nougat

On Thursday, the first-generation Galaxy Tab A 9.7 (SM-T550) was spotted in a document on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s database running Android 7.0, leading us to believe that Samsung is preparing to distribute the long-awaited Nougat update for the slate in the not-too-distant future. For those unaware, Android 7.0 brings a slew of new features to the table. In addition to enhanced notifications, improved application permissions and a ton of fresh emoji, the upgrade transports a multitude of essential bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations. It’s nice to see Samsung preparing an upgrade for the Galaxy Tab A 9.7 seeing as its already approached the end of its two-year support period, so it’s safe to say that this is the last major upgrade the tablet, which debuted running Lollipop , will receive. Initially, we were worried that the Galaxy Tab A 9.7 wouldn’t be able to run the firmware smoothly, but after taking a closer look at its spec sheet , we’re convinced it will. U

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have outsold the Galaxy S7 in almost all regions, says Samsung

When Samsung started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ a couple of months back, it was immediately evident that the new flagship was outperforming its predecessor as far as pre-orders was concerned . However, once the initial hype died down and customers who really wanted to buy a Galaxy S8 purchased one, we started hearing reports about sales of the Galaxy S8 slowing down. Some reports went so far as to suggest that the Galaxy S8 wasn’t able to keep up with the sales trajectory set by the Galaxy S7 last year. Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh refuted such reports recently by saying that this wasn’t the case and that the Galaxy S8 was performing very well. Samsung has now reiterated that claim in its Q2 2017 earnings announcement today. The company has said that the strong sales of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones have contributed significantly to the increase in earnings of its mobile division. It also mentions that the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have outso

Here’s how Samsung made an obscene amount of money last quarter

You may have heard by now that Samsung made an obscene amount of money in the quarter ending June 2017 . The company has broken its previous operating profit record and has become the world’s most profitable technology company in Q2 2017. Samsung has earned $12.67 billion in operating profit on revenue of $54.7 billion, more than any other company. The operating profit has surged 72.7 percent compared to Q2 2016. This begs the question, how has Samsung been able to achieve this? Semiconductor The chip business continues to be a cash cow for Samsung, it is the biggest contributor to Samsung’s bottom line. The semiconductor business has posted consolidated revenue of 17.58 trillion won ($15.7 billion) for the quarter and an operating profit of 8.03 trillion won ($7.20 billion) up from 2.6 trillion won ($1.8 billion) in Q2 2016. Consistently high demand for DRAM and NAND chips have pushed up prices which mean wider profit margins for Samsung. The company has taken full advantage of it

Samsung’s Q2 2017 earnings cement its status as the world’s most profitable tech company

Some people might have thought that Samsung had taken its eye off the ball with everything that happened since last year. There was the spectacular failure of the Galaxy Note 7 and a leadership crisis that landed the conglomerate’s heir apparent behind bars in a corruption probe. Despite all of that, the company’s earnings guidance for the second quarter of this year suggested that it may become the world’s most profitable technology company. Samsung has announced the Q2 2017 earnings today and sure enough, it has earned more profit in Q2 2017 than any other tech company on the planet. Samsung reported 61 trillion won ($54.7 billion) as revenue for the quarter ended June 30, 2017, up 19.2 percent from the same time last year. Verizon update brings new navigation bar features for Galaxy S8 and S8+

Image
T-Mobile had released an update for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ earlier this month, which promised to bring Daydream compatibility to the smartphones. However, users reported after installing the update that the phones still weren’t compatible with Daydream, and the carrier corrected the official changelog. Now, Verizon has released an update for Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones, which is supposed to bring Daydream support. However, Android Police is reporting that the update didn’t bring Daydream compatibility to the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. What users do get are new navigation bar features, including new pastel colors and a little button that lets you hide the navigation bar. SM-W2018 clamshell to come with a Snapdragon 835 CPU and 6GB of RAM

Twitter tipster @mmddj_china has revealed that Samsung’s upcoming SM-W2018 clamshell smartphone will sport a Snapdragon 835 processor and 6GB of RAM — so it’s safe to say that it isn’t going to be a slouch when it comes to performance. What will probably let the SM-W2018 down, however, is its software.  PhoneArena  believes that it will ship running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, which is disappointing; especially when you consider the handset is rumored to retail for around $2,000. The rest of the internals aren’t particularly impressive, either. The SM-W2018 is expected to feature a pair of 4.2-inch Full HD displays, a 12MP rear-facing camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS), a 5MP selfie shooter, 64GB of storage and a 2,300mAh battery. Related:  Samsung SM-W2017 clamshell smartphone spotted on Zauba with 4.2-inch display To be honest, unless Samsung is using some sort of battery-extending witchcraft, we’re not sure how a 2,300mAh cell is going to power two displays and a Snapd

Samsung officially launched the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage a couple of months back. This variant of the Galaxy S8+ is only being sold in a handful of markets, including Hong Kong and India. It was reported that this variant could be launched in markets outside South Korea and we’re seeing that happen.T he company today announced that the Galaxy S8+ with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage has been launched in Brazil. All of the other specifications remain the same so customers will get the same hardware package with this variant in Brazil that they do elsewhere. The only difference is the 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage which can also be expanded externally via microSD cards up to 256GB. The Galaxy S8+ with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage that’s being sold in Brazil has also been manufactured in the country. It’s only available in the Midnight Black color. The handset is now available for purchase for a suggested price of R$4,799 or $1,500. This is the only variant

Samsung now offering 10-year burn-in warranty for QLED TVs globally

Samsung announced several months ago that it was going to provide a 10-year burn-in warranty for its premium QLED TVs . It initially extended this commitment to customers in South Korea and Europe before offering it to customers in North America later. The company has now said that it will offer the same warranty globally. “With strong confidence in QLED TV’s product performance, we are offering a 10-year warranty for our QLED TVs around the world,” a representative for the company said. Samsung has been building up to this in recent months as it has been rolling out the premium televisions to more markets across the globe. The premium QLED TVs were launched in Brazil last month and Samsung promised all customers that they will get a 10-year warranty against burn-in. The burn-in phenomenon refers to the possibility of the screen appearing as though it’s stained or the image not being displayed properly. It can be caused by the same picture or image being repeatedly exposed to a sin

[Update: 6GB of RAM] Galaxy Note 8 Emperor Edition to come with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage

Samsung is testing a variant of the Galaxy Note 8  that will ship with 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, according to renowned Weibo tipster Ice Universe. The handset, which has been dubbed the Emperor Edition, is expected to launch in South Korea alongside the base model that’ll come with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, before inevitably making its way to China. In addition, Ice Universe revealed that the Galaxy Note 8 will hit the shelves in three colors, including Midnight Black and Orchid Grey. Rival tipster Roland Quant believes that the third variant will be a new Deep Blue hue that’s different to the Coral Blue shade that debuted on the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7, though we’re still yet to see any evidence to support his claim. Recent rumors suggest that the Galaxy Note 8 will sport a 6.3-inch edge-to-edge Infinity Display, an Exynos 8895/Snapdragon 835 CPU and a 3,300mAh battery. It should also ship running Android 7.1.1 Nougat ( no , not Android O) skinned with the lat

T-Mobile Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge get July security patch

A couple of weeks after it released the June security patch for these handsets, T-Mobile has now started rolling out the July security for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge on its network. The firmware update for these handsets follows similar updates that T-Mobile has already released for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy Note 5 recently. Firmware version G930TUVU4BQG5 and G935TUVU4BQG5 is now being rolled out by T-Mobile for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 edge. The carrier has released said update over-the-air and it should be live for all users in the near future. It’s a minor update which doesn’t bring much except the July security patch and the usual slew of stability and performance improvements. The update weighs in at just under 48MB so users shouldn’t expect much in the way of new features. The July security patch brings fixes for 65 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) discovered in the Android operating system. It also includes fixes for 16 vulnerabilities in Sam

Samsung’s smartphone market share in China estimated at just 3 percent

China is one of the most lucrative smartphone markets on the planet but Samsung has been facing challenges in retaining its lost glory. Most of its troubles can be attributed to strong competition from local manufacturers. The political tensions between China and South Korea aren’t helping as well because it leads many to shun the company’s products . The latest data from Counterpoint Research shows that Samsung’s smartphone market share in China for the second quarter of this year is at 3 percent. Chinese smartphone manufacturers are firmly in the lead with a combined 87 percent market share. The top four brands in China include Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi. Huawei and Vivo were the fastest growing brands in China during the second quarter followed by Oppo and Xiaomi. They continue to extend their lead over Apple and Samsung. Apple is the only foreign company with a decent share of the country’s smartphone market. Apple accounted for 8.2 percent of the market in the second quarter
