So let's have a look.

5 Best Verizon Phones Under $500

The Apple iPhone 7 might seem like an odd choice, but even if it's a 2016 handset, it's got great value and a decent hardware specs sheet to boot. It is still supported by Apple and will be for the next year or so. So if you're looking to invest in a new flagship but don't want to spend too much, the 32GB iPhone 7 is an excellent buy.

The handset comes with a 4.7-inch 750 x 1334 "Retina Display", the quad-core Apple A10 Fusion chipset, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of non-expandable storage, a 12-megapixel rear camera, a 7-megapixel front camera, iOS 11.3, and a 1,960 mAh battery. The retailer on Amazon is offering the handset in Jet Black, which was a rare color option when the smartphone was first launched.

There are no other colors on offer here, so your choices are fairly limited. Amazon is selling the certified refurbished version of the iPhone 7 for $439.95. This is an interesting price tag, making it an attractive offering overall. Naturally, the handset is compatible with Verizon Wireless networks.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 launched shortly after the iPhone 7 and managed to impress the market with its mammoth Infinity Display with no edges visible. This, in addition to the bevy of features on board make the Galaxy S8 an exciting device to own. Luckily, Amazon is offering the smartphone for $499, which is a steal for Verizon customers. To tell you more about the smartphone, the Galaxy S8 came out about a year ago, and has been in the markets ever since. It comes with a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2960 x 1440, accompanied by a 12-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of expandable storage, the octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC, Android 7.0 Nougat (upgradable to Oreo), and a 3,000 mAh battery.

To top this off, the Galaxy S8 is resistant to water and dust (IP68), so you're safe underwater or outdoors. The model offered here is certified refurbished. Although it is unlocked, it might carry some markers of Verizon Wireless. If this isn't a dealbreaker for you, be sure to check out the smartphone from Amazon. It's only being offered in Orchid Gray, however, so color options are pretty limited here.

The Essential Phone is an ambitious project from one of the founders of Android, Andy Rubin. It comes with all the features that you would expect from a flagship, with the addition of a couple of truly innovative attributes. The phone is built using a combination of titanium and ceramic, giving it a unique appeal, especially in the midst of other flagships. The phone also boasts of being the world's thinnest dual-camera smartphone, which is quite an achievement considering the amount of hardware that goes into dual-cameras.

The phone's body is also resistant to water and dust, making it a flagship to rival all others. However, some issues plagued the company's fortunes, which is why you probably didn't hear too much about this handset. But despite that, we would strongly recommend this device, mainly for the value it provides.

Here's a refresher of the hardware specs – 5.71-inch 1312 x 2560 LCD panel, dual 13-megapixel rear cameras, an 8-megapixel front camera, 4GB of RAM, 128GB of non-expandable storage, the octa-core Snapdragon 835 SoC, Android 8.1 Oreo, and a 3,060 mAh battery. The company also sells a couple of accessories for the smartphone which are worth checking out. The phone itself will cost you $499.99, which is an incredibly reasonable price tag given what it brings to the table. Since it comes with the most recent version of Android, you can be assured of getting updates for at least two years. But don't take our word for that as companies have been quick to change their minds about software updates.

You can get the Essential Phone in Black Moon, Halo Gray, and Pure White color variants.

The Google Pixel sparked a massive change for Google's devices, especially the Nexus lineup, which has now been entirely replaced by Pixel phones. Launched in 2016, the original Pixel is manufactured by HTC and comes highly recommended by experts thanks to the perfect blend of design and function. The smartphone comes with a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED display, the quad-core Snapdragon 821 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of non-expandable storage, a 12.3-megapixel rear camera, an 8-megapixel front camera, Android 8.1 Oreo, and a 2,770 mAh battery.

You can currently find the Black version of the handset on Amazon for $399.99, which is a very good price for a flagship level handset such as this one. For those concerned about the limited storage, well, Google recommends downloading Google Photos to back up your photos for free. The images and videos here will be stored in full resolution. Be sure to check the 32GB Pixel from Amazon.

The Moto X4 will make its way to any list, thanks primarily to the cult following the original Moto X received. The fourth iteration of the Moto X came as a surprise to everyone as the lineup was considered dead for a while. But Moto managed to surprise us with the device, and frankly, we're not disappointed. The Moto X4 is not a flagship, however. Keeping this in mind, it might pale in comparison to other flagships on this list.

The handset comes equipped with a 5.2-inch 1080p display, the octa-core Snapdragon 630 chipset, 12-megapixel dual rear cameras, a 16-megapixel front camera, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of expandable storage, Android 8.0 Oreo, and a 3,000 mAh battery. The phone is IP67 certified for water/dust resistance as well, so it should be relatively safe even during rains, although we recommend covering up your phone for that added layer of security.

The handset offered by Amazon is available only in Super Black, and is a Prime exclusive. Then it shouldn't be a surprise that the handset also comes with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant built in. You will have to shell out $299.99 for the device, making it the cheapest handset on this list. Considering the price to features ration, we think the Moto X4 is a worthy buy.
