Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 confirmed with face unlock

A new Xiaomi device is about to be introduced. The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 may come with Snapdragon 660 processor as we noted a couple of months ago. Details are actually scarce but somebody uploaded a teaser image on Weibo, telling us the possibility of new authentication and privacy features. We see a fingerprint and a head on the poster. We're assuming they refer to the fingerprint sensor and facial recognition technology. We don't think it will be an ordinary face unlock. Rumor has it the device will be powered by AI so it's the first Mi Pad to get smarter with artificial intelligence.

Facial unlock is easier but it's not yet perfect. Some OEMs are still trying to get it right. Xiaomi wants to try the trend with the help of a powerful front-facing camera and software. The Xiaomi tablet will run on a Snapdragon 660 chipset and will sport a 13MP rear camera, 5MP selfie shooter, and a large 6000mAh battery.

We're still not sold on facial recognition but it may soon be a standard as the Android team has started looking into providing official support. Facial recognition systems are said to have higher errors for non-white subjects while 3D facial recognition technology is delayed until late 2018. The tech can be compromised but there have been advancements in the recent months.

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 Android tablet will arrive with a more secure technology. Two variants of the tablet will be available: WiFi or LTE. Storage and memory configurations are 4GB RAM and 64GB storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB storage. Price tags read CNY 1,499 ($231) and CNY 1,999 ($308).

The official announcement will happen on the 25th of June so let's wait and see.
