Google opens up Google One to the general public

A few months ago Google started the process of transitioning Google Drive customers to their new Google One product. Google One is primarily a re-branding of Google Drive, though there are a couple new wrinkles involved with the revised platform. That stage of the transition appears to be complete as Google announced they are now opening up Google One to the general public so that anyone who is interested can sign up for a plan.

The plans that are being offered in general mirror what was being offered through the old Google Drive. The first 15GB of space can be obtained for free and then the first paid tier is for 100GB of space for $1.99 per month. Google did add another tier above that as an option for 200GB of space at $2.99 per month. The existing plan for $9.99 per month still exists but Google doubled the storage space from 1TB to 2TB.

One new feature Google added is sharing with family members. Up to five other people can be added to an account to share the space on Google One. Customers also have more direct access to Google support on a 24/7 basis.

Google indicates in their announcement that they plan to offer special deals like Play Store credits or hotel deals through Google Search for customers who pay for Google One.

As someone who was a Google Drive customer that was transitioned, I have found the specials to be sporadic at best and generally of minimal benefit. Another change that I have not seen mentioned by Google, but one I experienced when my account moved to Google One was that Google started automatically adding images I saved to a folder on Google Drive over to Google Photos. That synchronization was a nice benefit and meant I could eliminate a step in one of my workflows.

Google says the new Google One offerings are available now in the U.S. and will be rolling out to other countries over the next few weeks.

Apple is postponing new iOS features in favor of reliability and performance

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019. What we will get this year is improvements to AR, digital health and parental controls. Apart from that, the OS will largely feature improvements to performance and user experience.
