Update: Google is aware of the Pixel Android 9.0 Pie charging issue and is working on a fix

One of the best things about owning a Pixel phone is the speed at which you receive updates but unfortunately there are downsides, one of them being that a speedy update can sometimes mean bugs are included. The latest Pie Android 9.0 update is unfortunately no exception with many Pixel XL and some Pixel users noticing that their phone was no longer charging rapidly.

After it has been widely reported by the tech media Google have responded sending out a comment on the issue:

We're aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie. The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks.

The original Pixel and Pixel XL both support power delivery (PD) charging which is relatively quick and they also support fast charging with non-PD USB-C chargers. It is interesting that Google are saying that the charging bug is only applicable to third party chargers but many of the users reporting this issue are seeing it while using the official charger out of the box. When the fix arrives we will have to see if it does indeed fix everything.

In many people's opinion fast charge capability the requirement for wireless charging is superfluous and without the fast charging the phone is less useful (especially when it is out of battery towards the end of the day). If you own a Pixel or Pixel XL keep an eye out for an update rolling out in the coming weeks.
