New Leaked Renders Show Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL Together

In short: Official press renders of the still-unannounced Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have now reportedly been leaked to NieuweMobiel via an unnamed source. The new images show the Android handsets side-by-side and encased in gray protective shells bearing the traditional Google "G" logo. Some similarities between the two, such as the dual front-facing cameras, stereo speakers at both the top and bottom, and a single camera at the back along with an LED flash and fingerprint scanner. Button placement is also the same on each handset, positioned along the left-hand-side. Meanwhile, the larger Pixel 3 XL features a prominent notch with cameras on either side of the speaker and the smaller handset has no notch and the cameras sit to the left of the speaker. Aside from the standard Android icon layout, Google Assistant is shown in a wide search bar at the bottom of the display just above the new Android 9 Pie pill-shaped navigation icon.

Background: None of the design language shown in the newly leaked renders is necessarily surprising since there have already been a huge number of leaks pertaining to these particular devices. Both are expected to be launched at a hardware event in Paris on October 9 and will essentially be the same on the inside, if rumors are to be believed. That would mean a base and premium model for each version, starting at 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage and moving up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage at a minimum. An octa-core Snapdragon 845 SoC is expected to power Android 9 Pie out of the box in either case and both will likely include Active Edge. The latter of those is a squeeze feature derived from HTC's Edge Sense, meaning that users can squeeze the edges to launch various apps or actions. Meanwhile, no 3.5mm headphone jack is expected but both are predicted to charge and feature audio output via USB Type-C 3.1.

The handsets would differ in terms of battery size, with the larger handset expected to ship with a 430mAh higher capacity than the Pixel 3's 3,000mAh power cell. Setting that aside, the Pixel 3XL is predicted to ship with a 6.71-inch OLED panel set at a resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 and at an 18.5:9 ratio. The smaller counterpart is rumored to feature a 2,160 x 1080 panel at 5.4-inches and an 18:9 aspect ratio. Both are expected to include Gorilla Glass 5 for screen hardening.

Impact: The internal differences, as shown in the new images, also result in some interesting differences in appearance. Although both Pixel devices should effectively operate almost identically, the larger handset will likely be more appealing to those who want more screen real estate and don't mind the notched design. That's not unusual since it follows the trends set by earlier Pixel smartphones. Meanwhile, the images themselves actually seem more specifically focused on the protective cases. There's not much surprise to be found there either, however, since Google introduced fabric cases with last year's iteration. Those are shown in a black woven style in the new images.
