Samsung Duo Wireless Charger Detailed In-Depth By IDT

In short: Samsung's Duo wireless charging solution was built around solutions provided by Integrated Device Technology, Inc (IDT), according to a recent press release from the company which also revealed some in-depth details about the Qi wireless fast charger. Namely, the wireless power solutions company says that the entire system is built around a single custom integrated chip, based on ARM's 32-bit Cortex-M0 processor. That's coupled with IDT's own advanced wireless power transmitter. IDT wireless power receiving systems, meanwhile, are already in most top Android handsets, IDT says, making the Duo a good charging solution for any device that meets the current Qi charging standards.

Background: The Samsung Duo Wireless charger itself was launched alongside Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 flagship phablet and marketed as a dual solution for powering up both that device and the company's new Galaxy Watch. In fact, it has previously been bundled alongside that handset by the manufacturer for those consumers who are looking to get a bit more out of their purchase. Moreover, some bundle offers are still available at the company's online store page for the device, while several carriers have ongoing offers of their own – mostly centered around pricing, as of this writing. The device features both an upright stand and a pad, with power managed between the two at 7.5W for more rapid device charging with compatible devices. That, of course, makes it a perfect complement for those who are already invested in the Samsung ecosystem or for those who may just want to buy the Galaxy Watch and who already have a Qi-compatible smartphone.

Impact: It isn't necessarily surprising that Samsung would look to IDT as a partner for the technologies inside of its Duo charging station. As already mentioned, the company has a relatively wide reach within the industry already. However, IDT also makes a point of highlighting that high-efficiency solutions like the Samsung Duo are made possible by innovative ideas from manufacturers. The Duo itself may effectively be two IDT wireless charging stations rolled into one but Samsung is responsible for bringing that to the market and setting a new standard for wireless charging, IDT says.
