Snapdragon 8150-Based Motorola Flagship “Odin” Due For 2019 Release

Motorola, according to a report by XDA Developers, is working on a new flagship smartphone that will be released sometime in 2019. Unlike the last high-end smartphone from the company, the upcoming one is said to come powered by an unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 processor, which itself could be announced next month. The report further adds that the high-end device, codenamed Odin, includes 4GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage while currently being in its development phase and may launch with increased RAM and storage capacities to keep pace with the competition. Citing its sources, the publication informs that the handset will come preloaded with Android 9 Pie and it may also support the Moto Mods, which can later enable 5G connectivity for the North Americans. The alleged Motorola Odin flagship smartphone will reportedly support an upcoming 5G Moto Mod that will likely be using the Snapdragon X50 modem. The Moto Z3, announced earlier this year, is a Verizon-exclusive device and its follow-up is also expected to remain exclusive to the carrier, although Motorola could also bring an unlocked variant to retail alongside the locked one. The Lenovo-owned company is also reported to be working on the software support to enable under-display fingerprint scanners, however, it is still not clear if Odin will feature the advanced biometric sensor or not. Having said that, XDA's sources are optimistic that the under-display fingerprint sensor is being developed for Odin itself as Motorola is unlikely to debut the technology with any of its upcoming mid-range devices. Motorola's last flagship smartphone, the Moto Z3, was announced in August this year but it failed to receive a great deal of fanfare mainly because it used a yesteryear Snapdragon 835 chipset even though the company compensated for it with a modest pricing and made it 5G-upgradable using a Moto Mod. The OEM has largely been absent from the flagship space for a while now and it appears to have felt the heat from emerging smartphone makers like OnePlus. The upcoming Motorola Odin will hopefully mend the situation as it will be better equipped to face the competition with the top-end processor from Qualcomm and support for 5G connectivity using a mod, if the report turns out to be true.
