AT&T will launch its 5G mobile hotspot on December 21

We have known for quite some time that AT&T's first mobile 5G-ready device wouldn't be a smartphone, but rather a puck-sized mobile hotspot from Netgear. And now we know when it's launching.

AT&T on Tuesday officially announced that it will make the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot available on Friday, December 21, in a limited capacity. AT&T is proud to announce that the device will mark the big blue wireless carrier's first mobile 5G-ready device for consumers and business customers. And yes, this means that AT&T will be able to yell out, "First!" when it comes to launching a mobile 5G product, along with its own mobile 5G network, for customers to actually access.

The launch is very limited to start. AT&T today turned on mobile 5G, based on the mmWave spectrum, in 12 markets: Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Louisville, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Raleigh, San Antonio and Waco. However, it's worth noting here that mobile 5G (or what AT&T is calling its "5G+" network) is turned on in some parts of these cities. It's not widely available even in these launch markets.

Looking forward, AT&T says that it will expand to seven additional cities in the first half of 2019: Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Nashville, Orlando, San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose. Again, AT&T's 5G+ network will only be live in parts of these cities, so not quite a widespread release.

As for the aforementioned Netgear Nighthawk 5G mobile hotspot, AT&T says select business customers and consumers will be able to pick up the company's first mobile 5G device and access 5G networks speeds free for 90 days. The widespread launch for the general consumer happens next spring, and the mobile hotspot will cost $499. You will then have to pay $70 per month for 15GB of data for those 5G speeds.

Or you could go with AT&T's first 5G smartphone from Samsung in the first part of 2019. And if that doesn't sound like a plan, how about an even better 5G smartphone from Samsung coming in the second part of next year?

Are you excited about the rollout of 5G?
