How To Fix Samsung Galaxy A6 Random Battery Drain

Problem: I've had the Galaxy A6 for over a month. Battery behaviour is normally completely fine, but occasionally there is huge battery drain caused, I think, by being in an area or building with low signal. Battery statistics don't show anything particularly unusual when this happens, just exaggerated drain. Often I'm not using the phone when I notice it's gotten hot, noticed the battery draining, or one time when overnight it lost 40% in 6 hours. My only fix is to put it into extreme power saving mode. Are there any other ways to detect of an app is in 'wakelock' or similar other than in Settings, as like I said, nothing untoward is obvious.

Solution: Before performing any troubleshooting steps on the phone it's best to make sure that it is running on the latest software version. If an update is available then I suggest that you download and install it first.

One factor that can cause this problem is the low signal in your area since the phone will be boosting its antenna signal just to get a stable connection which in turn uses up battery life. There are however other factors that can also cause this problem which we will be checking.

Perform a soft reset

If your phone has a lot of services running then it will use up more battery life. Try doing a soft reset then check if the issue still occurs.

  • Hold the Power button for 3-5 seconds.
  • Tap Power off.
  • When the device has shut down completely, wait approximately one minute. This will help make sure that the cache and temporary files are wiped from the device.

Check if the problem occurs in Safe Mode

Try to check if an app you downloaded is causing the problem. There are instances when an app is not optimized properly to run on your phone which makes it use up more battery life. To check if an app is causing this problem you need to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When 'SAMSUNG' appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see 'Safe Mode'.

If the battery drain issue does not occur in this mode then the problem could be caused by one of the apps you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition of the phone

Cached data of apps is usually stored by the phone in a dedicated partition of its internal storage. This data helps apps open faster making for a better mobile experience. There are however instances when this cached data can become corrupted and can cause issues with the device. To check if this is what's causing the problem you should wipe the cache partition of the phone.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys ('Installing system update' will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight 'wipe cache partition'.
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight 'yes' and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

The last troubleshooting step you will have to do if the above steps fails to fix the problem is a factory reset. This will revert the phone back to its original factory condition. Make sure to backup your phone data before doing this step.

  • Make sure that the phone is off.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys ('Installing system update' will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight 'wipe data / factory reset.'
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until 'Yes — delete all user data' is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, 'Reboot system now' is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
  • Once the phone has fully started do not install any apps in your phone yet. Try to check first if the battery drains quickly.
