Leaked Front Panel Shows Xperia XZ4's Oddly Tall Display Aspect Ratio
The Xperia XZ4 is Sony's upcoming smartphone, and the device's glass front panel just leaked on Twitter. This front panel actually comes with a tall display, which is easily noticeable, and we're looking at a 21:9 display aspect ratio here. You will notice that the bezels on the device are quite thin, not as thin as on some other flagships out there, but this phone will not sport a display camera hole nor a notch, it seems, which justifies including a top bezel. Speaking of which, you will notice four cutouts up top, the middle one is there for the phone's earpiece, the two cutouts next to it are there for the phone's front-facing cameras, two of them, while the third one on the side is a mystery at this point, but it's probably some additional sensor. The bottom bezel is much thinner than the top one, it's like the top bezel is cut in half, while the side bezels are almost non-existent. This front panel also suggests that the phone's display will sport slightly rounded corners.
21:9 Display Aspect Ratio
Rumors have been suggesting, for a while, that the Xperia XZ4 will sport a 21:9 display aspect ratio, and based on a few leaks that we've seen thus far, that will actually happen. The Xperia XZ4 probably won't be the only smartphone to switch to this display aspect ratio, as we may see quite a few OEMs switching to this form factor in 2019. This display aspect ratio basically allows the company to implement a larger display, while keeping the phone narrow enough for one use, well, at least to an extent, as this display aspect ratio also means that the phone will be taller than usual, which will make using the top part of the display a real pain. This can be somewhat adjusted via software, like what Samsung is doing with its One UI implementation, but other OEMs probably won't follow suit. It remains to be seen how larger will this display be, though, as the Xperia XZ3 sports a 6-inch panel, and an 18:9 display aspect ratio. A just to a 21:9 form factor will be quite significant for Sony, though the company will hopefully keep the display compact enough so that we can at least somewhat reach the upper portion of it.
Xperia XZ4 Design & Specs
This is actually not the first time that we're seeing this design of the Xperia XZ4, as that very same front panel appeared yesterday, when it was actually shared along with the rest of the device in a render. Unfortunately, though, that render did not show anything else other than the front side of the phone. The Xperia XZ4 did leak at the end of November, though, and it leaked in both video and images, the phone's whole design was showed, pretty much. That being said, the design that leaked back then is somewhat different to the one that this front panel, and the aforementioned render are suggesting. If the leak from November is to be believed, the phone's top and bottom bezels will be almost the same size, while the device will include a single camera on the front, not two of them. That leak also suggested that the fingerprint scanner will be included on the right-hand side of the phone, along with the phone's volume rocker buttons, power / lock key, and a dedicated camera key. That leak also suggested that the phone's back side will be curved, quite a bit, and that the device will be made out of metal and glass. The leaked renders showed off three rear-facing cameras on the Xperia XZ4, and those cameras were vertically-aligned. An LED flash is placed above the phone's rear-facing cameras, while the Xperia branding can also be found on the back of the device, in the bottom portion of its back side.
That being said, those leaked renders also came with some spec info. If the provided info is to be believed, the Xperia XZ4 will actually include a 6.5-inch OLED display, which would explain why Sony is changing the display aspect ratio on the device, the phone would simply be too wide otherwise. That leak also suggested that the phone will measure 166.9 x 72.4 x 8.2mm, which suggests that it will be quite tall, taller than pretty much all flagship smartphones that are available these days, which could present an issue for consumers. Those leaked images suggested that a 3.5mm headphone jack will not be a part of the package, while that's pretty much all info that leaked. We can guess that the Xperia XZ4 will be fueled by the Snapdragon 855, though, as Sony has been using Qualcomm's flagship processors in its smartphones for years now. The Xperia XZ4 will probably include stereo speakers, while the device will ship with Android 9 Pie out of the box, with Sony's very own skin on top of it. Sony's current-gen flagships have started receiving the Android 9 Pie update, so we pretty much know what to expect in that regard.
When Is The Xperia XZ4 Coming?
The Sony Xperia XZ4 will probably become official in February, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. The Xperia XZ2 was announced during MWC 2018, along with the Xperia XZ2 Compact, while the Xperia XZ3 landed in August. Sony has a habit of releasing two flagship smartphones (from the same lineup of devices) per year, so that's not surprising at all. The Xperia XZ4 Compact will probably become official alongside the Xperia XZ4 in February next year, though we do not have any info regarding that phone thus far. If the company plans to do something similar to what it did in the past, the Xperia XZ4 Compact will also ship with the Snapdragon 855, but it will sport a considerably smaller display, and quite possibly a somewhat different design, at least when its back side is concerned, as the "Compact" model will be more affordable than the Xperia XZ4. Both of these phones will probably continue appearing in rumors and leaks in the coming weeks, so we should be able to share more info soon.
