Samsung Expands Galaxy S8 Android 9 Pie Rollout, Beta Program Ending

Samsung had started rolling out Android 9 Pie to the Galaxy S8 & S8+ a couple of days ago, and reports have now arrived that the rollout has started hitting more countries. Germany received the update first, at least according to reports, while the update started hitting India as well. Now, reports from Latvia, Portugal, Russia, and Spain have started coming in, claiming that the update is rolling to their units as well, which definitely points to a global rollout.

Do keep in mind that the update is hitting unlocked units in the countries we've mentioned, as carrier-branded handsets will have to wait a bit longer in order to get the update. If you are a part of the company's beta program, well, your update will be considerably smaller, around 500MB, compared to a 1GB+ full update (around 1.6GB, though your mileage, may vary). The reason for this is quite obvious, those of you who are a part of the beta program are already running Android 9 Pie, just its beta version, so Samsung will just update you to a stable version.

Speaking of the beta program, it seems like Samsung is sending notices confirming the conclusion of the One UI beta program. In its notice, Samsung notes that it will not release any new Beta software, no longer provide any official reply to user's opinion, while beta feedback usage will be stopped. This is an expected move considering that the stable version of Android 9 Pie is landing on the Galaxy S8 and S8+, so there's no need for the beta program any longer.

It took Samsung quite a bit of time to bring Android 9 Pie to the Galaxy S9 and Note9 series, but it's nice to see that its 2017 flagships are now getting some love as well. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ were introduced back in March 2017, while they're available since April on a global scale. Plenty of users are still using their Galaxy S8 units, as many of them are still tied to a contract with their carriers, while the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are still really compelling devices.

What's New In Android 9 Pie & One UI

Android 9 Pie should bring new life to the Galaxy S8 and S8+, in a way. Android 9 Pie is a considerable improvement over both Android 7.0 Nougat and 8.0 Oreo, not to mention that Samsung's One UI is coming with this update as well. Android 9 Pie, on its own, brings a number of improvements under the hood, and also a number of features. Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness are definitely worth noting, as you should get a better battery life out of your Galaxy S8 and S8+ device with Android 9 Pie. You will also notice some changes in the accessibility menu, while text selection is easier than ever in Android 9 Pie.

Now, as part of One UI, Samsung is bringing its new navigation gestures with Android 9 Pie, along with a considerable change of the UI. One UI is considerably different than Samsung Experience UI, as it puts focus on one-handed use. Samsung's applications and its launcher are adapted for one-handed use, and you will notice a number of changes in the design of the UI in general. The whole UI now looks even more refined, even though it's still quite colorful, but in a good way, as it looks modern. The overview menu is also changed here, and looks more like the overview menu in Android 9 Pie, which means it's horizontal now, compared to a vertical one that used to be available on the Galaxy S8 and S8+.
