Sony is not to blame for leaving the Xperia Z3 off the Android Nougat list

Image
Sony Mobile announced the list of Xperia devices that are to receive Android 7.0 Nougat firmware last week. Unfortunately, the Xperia Z2 and Z3 were not on that list, which left many owners venting their fury at Sony. Xperia Z3 owners in particular were annoyed that Sony had stopped updates, especially as the handset was involved in the Android Nougat Developer Preview . Therefore, there was perhaps an assumption from some, that the Xperia Z3 should be perfectly capable of running the final Android 7.0 release. However, the absence of the Xperia Z3 on that Nougat list is not Sony’s fault. Devices that get upgraded to new Android versions need to pass Google’s Compatibility Test Suite (CTS). The CTS was updated during the Android N Developer Preview programme which meant that to comply with the certification requirements, Sony never released the final preview (DP5) firmware on the Xperia Z3. The last update was the ‘DP4’ firmware. So what exactly changed in the CTS? Well, it seems th

Galaxy Folder 2 live pictures leaked

Image
We have been closely following all of the developments related to the Galaxy Folder 2 over the past few months. The SM-G1600 is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy Folder flip phone . The new handset features a 3.8-inch display and is likely powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm processor with 2GB RAM and 8GB internal storage. We recently saw some leaked promotional images for this handset and now some live pictures of the Galaxy Folder 2 have been leaked out of China. The images show the Galaxy Folder 2 in gold color. We get a good look at the handset from all angles. It looks quite similar to its predecessor when it comes to design since most of the changes have been made under the hood. Additional specifications of this handset are likely to include an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera, microSD card support, 2,000mAh battery and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Since the Galaxy Folder was largely limited to China it’s quite likely that the Galaxy Folder 2 might only be released in C

From stage props to the watch box: Samsung’s Gear S2 marketing comes full circle

Image
What’s in a box? Not much. Usually, when smartphone lovers open a new box that contains a new smartphone, they toss the box first without thinking about it. Phone unboxings show tech reviewers tossing the box in one direction, the manual in the other, with their eyes set on the metal, plastic, metal-and-glass, or other build quality beauty before them. Few smartphone lovers are concerned with boxes and packaging (though some deem it a “nice touch” when the box has some style or professionalism). I’ve never given smartphone boxes a second thought, but Samsung’s Gear S2 packaging made me rethink my neutral feeling about boxes. I still remember the day when my Gear S2 smartwatch (the first one; Verizon gave me a second one for free due to its Galaxy S7/S7 edge pre-order promotional ) made its way to my door. I heard a knock on the door, opened it, signed for the package, accepted it, thanked the delivery man, closed the door, and immediately set to opening the box. At the moment of open

Galaxy Note 7 review: Samsung’s next-generation phablet closes in on perfection

Image
The Galaxy Note 7 is the smartphone from Samsung that is poised to wrap up 2016 before it’s over and award the crown to the Korean giant once more. Samsung chose to refine the Note, and has made small tweaks that show that it has mastered the art of refinement. Apart from the small tweaks, yes, there are additions to the Galaxy Note software that make the Galaxy Note 7 the must-have device of the year. Is it the must-have device of the year for you? Does it achieve “immortality” in the smartphone race? Let’s dive right in to discover the answer. Aesthetics At first glance, the Galaxy Note 7 looks similar to the Galaxy Note 5, and it is. Taking a look at the two handsets side by side, you’ll notice that Samsung has kept the Galaxy Note 7′s design quite similar to that of its predecessor. The back and front cameras, flash, heart rate monitor, headphone jack, S Pen, USB port, volume and power/standby buttons, and LED notification remain in the same place. Samsung has made some slight
