Global Smartphone Market Decline To Continue Until 2019: IDC

Image
The global smartphone market will continue declining over the course of this year in terms of shipments — and most likely sales — until 2019 when the negative trend is expected to be reversed, according to a new report authored by the International Data Corporation. The mobile industry's overall prospects remain positive in the medium term, with IDC predicting a compound annual growth rate of 2.4-percent over a five-year period ending in 2025. Shipments of Android devices are projected to shrink 0.5-percent in 2018, whereas their iOS counterparts are likely to grow by 2.5 percentage points. China is believed to be the biggest driver of the recently observed decline that's set to continue this year, though the Far Eastern country should see its shipments remain flat in 2019. The Asia/Pacific region, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East are expected to generate new growth avenues for the global mobile industry beyond next year as an increasing number of consumers starts e

Verizon’s 5G Backs ChalkTalk, New AR Education Tool

Image
Verizon shared more details on a collaborative effort pertaining to an AR learning tool called ChalkTalk, undertaken by NYU's Future Reality Lab using the carrier's pre-commercial 5G Incubator at New York City's Alley. Dr. Ken Perlin and his students developed ChalkTalk as a way to utilize AR to enhance education lessons with immersive visuals. The idea is to create a virtual space for visual representations that are interactive and keep up with the instructor, teacher, or professor in real time. That way, as the individual leading the class moves through a lesson, the students are able to gain a deeper understanding of what is being taught but that presents real problems, too. Latency and throughput with current-generation networks will work, to a degree, but also hold the solution back. By utilizing Verizon's pre-commercial 5G technology , Perlin was able to create the more robust and immersive experience offered with his open-source ChalkTalk tool. Breaking down ho

Waymo orders 62,000 Chrysler Pacificas, in talks w/ Fiat Chrysler on selling self-driving cars

Image
After ordering thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans in January, Waymo is drastically expanding its self-driving fleet with an 62,000 more vehicles. It comes ahead of the Alphabet division's first ride service this year, while the company is also in discussions to allow others to sell cars that feature its autonomous technology. Nintendo Switch Waymo today announced (via The Verge ) a new deal with Fiat Chrysler (FCA) to purchase 62,000 more electric minivans. This expansion comes on top of a deal earlier this year to add "thousands" of more vehicles to the fleet, with that delivery beginning at the end of 2018. An Early Rider program has been in operation for several months now in Chandler, Arizona, with Waymo planning to make it publicly available later this year. This Lyft/Uber competitor is still in early stages with that upcoming launch likely providing more feedback about people's experiences in self-driving cars. Last

Qualcomm To Miss Short-Term Growth Goals: Morgan Stanley

Image
Chip giant Qualcomm has been facing a number of difficulties in the market lately, and even with the recent announcement of its dedicated Snapdragon XR1 platform for augmented and virtual reality, analysts with Morgan Stanley are convinced that it won't be able to meet the near-future growth goals set forth by investors. To be clear, the analysts said that this would be the case even if Qualcomm is allowed to buy out NXP, a move that's been hotly contested thus far. The analysts said that Qualcomm's troubles with Apple and growing issues with royalty collection will lead to a "period of underperformance", and there's not much that Qualcomm can do to mitigate that. The two biggest moves with growth potential that could possibly get Qualcomm out of this temporary rut are the new XR1 platform and the firm's potential acquisition of NXP, with both targeted toward helping Qualcomm expand beyond smartphones and networking, two areas where its looming presenc

These are all the Moto phones Motorola is releasing in 2018

Image
2018 is shaping up to be a big year for Motorola. Ever since its acquisition by Lenovo, Motorola's turned into a company that's not shy about releasing a lot of different phones each year. This allows for a lot of choices, but it can also make trying to pick the perfect phone a bit headache-inducing. No matter your opinion on Motorola's release cycle, however, there's no denying that 2018 is already shaping up to be an exciting year for the company. We've seen a ton of leaks, rumors, renders and more for Motorola's lineup of phones for 2018 ever since the beginning of the year, and this is everything we know so far. The phones that are still on their way Motorola One Power The wildcard on this list easily goes to the Motorola One Power . We didn't have any idea such a phone existed until late May, and based on what we know so far, it looks quite a bit different from the rest of Motorola's 2018 handsets. First off, the overall design

Insider Attack Resistance

Image
Posted by Shawn Willden, Staff Software Engineer Our smart devices, such as mobile phones and tablets, contain a wealth of personal information that needs to be kept safe. Google is constantly trying to find new and better ways to protect that valuable information on Android devices. From partnering with external researchers to find and fix vulnerabilities, to adding new features to the Android platform, we work to make each release and new device safer than the last. This post talks about Google's strategy for making the encryption on Google Pixel 2 devices resistant to various levels of attack—from platform, to hardware, all the way to the people who create the signing keys for Pixel devices. We encrypt all user data on Google Pixel devices and protect the encryption keys in secure hardware . The secure hardware runs highly secure firmware that is responsible for checking the user's password. If the password is entered incorrectly, the firmware refuses to decrypt the dev

Samsung’s Cinema LED screens will land in India soon

Image
Samsung has been making Cinema LED screens for theatres for some time now. Last month, along with bringing the first Cinema LED screen to the US, Samsung also launched the Onyx brand to sell these theatre screens. Since the initial launch of these screens in July last year, Samsung has already installed these screens in a few theatres around the world. It appears select theatres in India will soon join the list. A top company executive told IANS that the Onyx Cinema LED screens will launch in India later this year. Samsung has partnered with PVR Cinemas and INOX Group to install the Onyx Cinema LED screens in the country. At first, they will be installed at the PVR multiplexes in Delhi and Mumbai, but Samsung has aggressive plans to expand the availability. The Korean company is hoping to convert at least 20 percent of the total 10,000 cinema screens in India to Onyx Cinema Screens by 2020. Google's latest Lens features from I/O should finally be available now

Image
Back at I/O in May, Google revealed a bunch of features for Lens—some of which were already being tested in some form, but all of which were pretty slick. Based on a mixture of recent reports, our own experiences , and Google's recent tweets, the new features Google described should have arrived on most compatible phones as of yesterday. The snazzy new functionality in Lens includes real-time detection, Smart Text selection, and a new white UI. New updates to Google Lens help you do more with what you see: 📖 Smart text selection 👗 Style matching ⏲️ Real-time results https://t.co/MfEQzNJfI1 — Google (@Google) May 30, 2018 We've covered the rollout for the various new Lens features quite a few times . Google's been slowly deploying these Lens-related tweaks over the last month or two, and the duration of that testing can make it a bit difficult to pinpoint precisely when individual features landed. But as of yesterday, they should almost all be

Samsung today, announced it is adding 18 new stickers to the AR Emoji feature available on the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Samsung Galaxy S9+. With the new stickers, the number of sticker expressions available to AR Emoji users doubles from 18 to 36. Another 18 will be added in the coming months. We might have forgotten all the math we learned at school, but that should mean that 54 stickers will be available by later this year. Samsung Gives Galaxy S9 Owners 18 New AR Emoji Expressions

Image
AR Emoji were supposed to be a big selling point for the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+, basically as a response or counter to Apple's Animoji. They, umm, aren't exactly that, but if you do use them, know that you are getting more expressions. Samsung announced this morning that they are doubling the AR Emoji expressions on the Galaxy S9 from 18 to 36, plus they have another 18 in the works. You'll find the new expressions, some of which can be seen above, in the My Apps section of the Galaxy Apps store on your phone. Just look for AR Emoji in there and you should see an update. Like other AR Emoji, you'll be able to share the new expressions from your phone's keyboard or copy and paste them from the Gallery app into other messaging platforms. Google launches a beta of Neighbourly, an app for crowdsourcing local questions

Image
Google is taking another shot at social apps with the beta release of Neighbourly , a new, hyperlocal-focused app designed to answer your questions, via The Next Web . The company envisions Neighbourly as a sort of crowdsourced city guide. The residents who know your city best can use the app to share tips, tricks, shortcuts, and recommendations with less in-the-know residents. Users will be able to ask questions, submit answers, and follow other people's questions if they're interested to see the results through a simple stack of cards. According to The Next Web , Neighbourly is starting off with a limited beta. It's only available on Android and only open to residents of Mumbai, with support for English and eight Indian languages. In practice, it looks a lot like a Google version of Nextdoor , a similar local social media network you can use to talk to people near you and broadcast your thoughts to friends and colleagues around the world. Neighbourly is avai

There's something fishy about the transparent Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition

Image
Xiaomi announced some new phones today , which I'm sure will sell in huge numbers (just not in the US). Among the new devices was the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. This phone is like the regular M8 except it has a transparent glass back that shows off suspiciously pretty internal components. Really, there's a little Snapdragon logo on what purports to be the SoC. This could all be smoke and mirrors. The Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition is a striking device, but it's increasingly difficult for OEMs to stand out from the rest of the glass slates. HTC recently announced the U12+ with a transparent back, but you're not going to see anything especially cool in there; phone internals are engineered for efficiency, not beauty. The Mi 8 Explorer Edition shows off its components in a very odd fashion, though. The main board chips are arrayed across the top section of the phone, and some of them are labeled so you can see what they are. This design looks cool, but it

Video: Jimmy Kimmel Tricks Guillermo Into A Waymo Ride

Image
Jimmy Kimmel is now promoting Waymo's self-driving solutions, having done just that with a pre-recorded bit aired as part of his show last night. The video that can be seen below shows how Kimmel's sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez was tricked into riding one of Waymo's autonomous Pacifica Hybrid minivans by being told he's shooting a commercial for a new meat-flavored energy drink. Staged or not, the result of the endeavor was an effortless ride to a taco place, with the bit apparently being meant to showcase how far Google's spin-off came since it started testing driverless cars in 2009. Self-driving technologies are still in their infancy, especially as regulators in the United States and most other parts of the world are still slow to respond to their rise with legislation meant to standardize testing and eventual commercialization. The bulk of stateside testing is presently being conducted in California, Arizona, and Pennsylvania, with Waymo being the only compan

Russian pre-orders for Nokia 3.1 are now live

Image
Three new Nokia phone were unveiled in Moscow earlier this week - the Nokia 5.1 , 3.1 , and 2.1 . While the first and the last will go on sale in July, the Nokia 3.1 will be released next month in June. And now, it's coming to light that pre-orders for the device are live in Russia. The phone costs RUB 11,990, which currently translates to $195. The model on offer comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. Color options include black, white, and blue. Meanwhile the company has confirmed the addition of Nokia 5.1 and 3.1 to the Android Enterprise Recommended program. The newly announced #Nokia3 and #Nokia5 are now included in the #AndroidEnterprise Recommended program. Power, security, and flexibility. Galaxy Note 9 release reportedly delayed due to design change

Image
We've been hearing reports over the past few weeks that the Galaxy Note 9 release will take place earlier than its predecessor due to Samsung's accelerated schedule . It was expected that the next flagship phablet may be out by late July or early August. That may not be the case, though, if a new report out of South Korea is believed. A last minute design change ordered by Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong will reportedly result in the Galaxy Note 9 release being delayed by two weeks. Galaxy Note 9 release It was reported earlier this month that Samsung Display has started mass production of the 6.38-inch display panel for the Galaxy Note 9 in April. This meant that it had started mass production a full two months before it did for the Galaxy Note 8 in 2017. That report lined up with the expectation that the Galaxy Note 9 release will take place ahead of schedule, not to mention the fact that Samsung already set a precedent this year by releasing the Gala
