Qualcomm had a reference device  sporting the new SoC and we were able to put it through its paces , including our very own Speed Test G . The results are impressive. In other big news this week, we found out  Motorola is planning on bringing back the Razr phone , made famous in the mid 2000s. We don't know a lot about the phone itself, but we can make some guesses  based on a patent  from August of last year. Plus, we look ahead at the future of LG and OnePlus , including a new peculiar accessory for LG . Also, we have good news and bad news about Huawei's security. Here are your top stories for the week 4:20 – Snapdragon 855 performance and benchmarking: Speed Test G, AnTuTu & Geekbench At CES, Gary Sims previewed the  Snapdragon 855 processor in reference hardware. Speed Limits in Google Maps, They are Here After All These Years

Image
Two years after starting a limited trial run, Google Maps is getting speed limits while navigating. We made it, guys. The new addition starting arrive to more users this week and is confirmed to be rolling out widely in the US, UK, and Denmark. As we noted earlier in the week, speed traps are being added as well , and those are going live in UK, US, Australia, Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, India, and Indonesia, according to Mashable . Can we drop a "finally" here? I mean, this is a feature that has been in other navigation systems and apps for years, right? I don't know what took Google so long, but I'll take it. If you aren't seeing them, again, you'll only see speed limits in Google Maps while navigating. Also, while navigating, if you swipe up on the estimated time panel, then tap Settings at the bottom of the screen, you should have an option to toggle speed limits on or off. 5G-enabled Samsung Galaxy S10 may pack humongous amount of storage

Image
As we're getting closer to February 20, it's becoming clear that at least one of the Galaxy S10 series phones will be more of a niche rather than a mass market device. The 5G-enabled Galaxy S10 will is expected to make its debut in the United States at Verizon, but the phone is likely to be made available in other countries as well. In some way, it makes perfect sense for the 5G model to be sold in those regions where customers would benefit from the new 5G technology, and since not many carriers announced they will offer 5G services this year, Samsung's phone will have limited availability. Image
The latest Made by Google phones have seen a number of discounts since launch from Black Friday to the winter holidays. With 2019 well underway, both the Google Store and Google Fi are discounting the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL by $150 off. Unlike previous offers, the Google Store does not appear to be advertising this discount yet (via AP ). The only indication is how the starting price has been slashed from $799 to $649. The $150 discount is across all colors and storage capacities. As such, the current pricing is: Pixel 3 64GB: $649 Pixel 3 128GB: $749 Pixel 3 XL 64GB: $749 Pixel 3 XL 128GB $849 This sale is comparable to $150 off the smaller Pixel 3, but not as generous as $200 for the Pixel 3 XL on Black Friday . Applied instantly during checkout, device activation on the MVNO is required within 30 days. However, that is the onl

DEAL: Pixel 3 and 3 XL $150 Off From Google, Plus Up to $400 Off for Trades

Image
The 2019 Pixel 3 or Pixel 3 XL deal you've been waiting for has arrived. The Google Store is running a $150 off deal on either phone in any color and with any amount of storage. At those discounts, you've got a Pixel 3 ( review ) starting point of $649 ($27.04/mo) and a Pixel 3 XL ( review ) starting point of $749 ($31.21/mo). Those are 64GB prices, of course, so if you want double that to 128GB, just add another $100 on. In addition to the $150 price, Google is offering up to $400 in refund credit for trading in an old phone. I took a quick glance through the prices they are offering in exchange and the $400 price point seems to be mostly for Apple phones (iPhone X). Samsung's Galaxy S9+ tops out at around $300, while Google's Pixel 2 XL was around $250. Been waiting to pull the trigger? This is a good time. Weekend poll: Which do you use more, Google Maps or Waze?

Image
In the last week, Google Maps has been rolling out some welcome navigational improvements. We've got support for  speed limits and  speed traps , now, both of which sound pretty familiar . As this Waze-ification of Maps continues, we realize we've never actually asked our readers: Which of the two apps do you use more? I strongly suspect there's going to be a geographic divide when it comes to use between the two, but I don't know precisely where it might land. Here in the 'states, Maps tends to dominate the subject of navigation — and it does a pretty good job, so it isn't undeserved. Still, Waze was beating Maps when it came to integrated features for a long time. ( Google owns Waze , too, if you didn't know.) As more features like incident reporting  start showing up in Maps, it seems Google may be finally merging functionality between the two navigation services. Though brand/app loyalty sometimes has more to do with where you started th
