Samsung extends the gap as the world’s largest smartphone vendor

Image
After publishing the India-specific report last week, Strategy Analytics has now released the global smartphone shipment data for Q2 2019. According to the report, Samsung shipped 76.3 million smartphones worldwide in Q2 2019, jumping 6.7% annually from 71.5 million units in Q2 2018 . Global smartphone shipments, however, fell by 2.6% to 341.4 million units from 350.4 million units a year earlier. Extends the gap at the top Samsung's overall Q2 2019 business may not look good , but its smartphone business is faring better, at least in terms of shipments. And this has reflected on the company's global smartphone business as well. Samsung led the global smartphone shipments in Q2 2019 with a 22.3% market share, extending the gap from the second-placed Huawei. The Chinese company held 17.2% of the market during

Samsung had warned investors in its earnings guidance for Q2 2019 that there will be a significant decline in profit for the period ending June 2019 compared to a year ago. It warned that the profit would decline by 56 percent as revenue slid by 4 percent compared to Q2 2018. The company has posted its full earnings result for the second quarter of the year today. The numbers are only marginally better than what Samsung had forecasted but they still paint a gloomy picture. Its profit is down by 55.61 percent as consolidated sales have suffered due to slow chip and flagship phone sales. Samsung's Q2 2019 profit has slumped by more than half Samsung has posted 56.13 trillion won in consolidated revenue for the quarter ending June 2019. That's just under $48 billion. Samsung might ship up to 40 million ODM phones in China this year

Image
According to South Korean publication ETNews , Samsung's ODM business approach in China might pay off by the end of the year. The source estimates that out of 300 million smartphones expected to be shipped by Samsung this year, 30-to-40 million units will be manufactured by an ODM. Meanwhile, the publication also cites research firm IHS Markit who isn't as confident in Samsung's results but still estimates that the number of Samsung smartphones manufactured by ODMs will increase to 8% (roughly 24 million units) in 2019, up from 3% last year. ODM phones may help Samsung regain lost market share in China News that Samsung might turn to ODMs to manufacture smartphones for the Chinese market first  emerged last September . Roughly one month later, the company launched its first ODM device  exclusively in China under the Galaxy A6s moniker, and it appears to have been relatively successful. As a reminder, ODM phones are manufactured by companies other than Samsung in thei

Trademarks reveal how Samsung might name the Galaxy A series in 2020

Image
This year Samsung made a slight change to its Galaxy A series' name by adding a second digit to it, particularly a zero at the end. Therefore, the successor to the Galaxy A5 (2018) became the Galaxy A50 this year; the Galaxy A7 (2018) was followed up by the Galaxy A70 , and so on. Now the question is how Samsung will proceed with its naming scheme in 2020, and we may have gotten the answer from a series of trademarks filed with the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office). A total of nine trademark applications have been filed with the EUIPO yesterday. They aim to secure names such as "Samsung A11," "Samsung A21," and all the way up to "Samsung 91." So instead of having to add the year 2020 in brackets to their names, smartphones belonging to next year's Galaxy A series should be easier to differentiate from this year's lineup. At least as long as we assume that the South Korean company will stick to this particular naming schem

Samsung Galaxy A80 review: Cool sliding camera fails to impress

Image
It seems the endless barrage of Galaxy A series phones we have seen this year has almost come to an end. Most of those phones are slight variations of each other, with Samsung wanting to provide an option for every kind of customer. If you have a short checklist and want a smartphone for a low price, you can choose anything under the Galaxy A50. If specs matter to you and you don't mind paying a bit more, you can take a look at the options above the Galaxy A50. The Galaxy A80, however, is a special case. It's an experiment for Samsung – the company came up with the idea of a pop-up and sliding camera after seeing all the devices from competitors with similar camera setups, allowing a notch and cutout-free display. Samsung is rather late to the party, of course, and today we see if the Galaxy A80 is a device that's worth considering for your next smartphone purchase.
