Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and UAE launch in Korea this week

Image
The Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and Under Armour Edition are nearing their South Korean market release, as Samsung just announced that they will be joining the Wi-Fi-only version  on store shelves on October 23 and October 25, respectively. The company intends to make this release a bit more exciting by gifting customers discount coupons for the Galaxy Buds along with every Galaxy Watch Active 2 purchased by November 30. Other coupons drop the price for smartwatch accessories, and Samsung also prepared incentives for prospective Galaxy Note 10 buyers in South Korea who may be wanting a smartwatch to go along with their new flagship phone. Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and UAE nearing South Korean launch with incentives in tow The Galaxy Watch Active 2 LTE and Under Armour Edition are similar on a technical level aside from the lack of LTE on the UAE, and both models come with a 40mm or 44mm dial. Nevertheless, the Under Armour Edition features unique UA-branded silicon straps; it

You’ll need Android 10 on your Galaxy device for Gmail’s dark mode

Image
It came as a pleasant surprise when dark mode for the Google Play Store started working for owners of Galaxy devices on Android Pie even though dark mode for Google apps is supposed to work only on Android 10 . Later, Instagram also updated its app with a dark mode for Android 10 that works on Galaxy devices running Android Pie. But, if you were waiting for Gmail's dark mode to arrive before Samsung rolls out Android 10 and One UI 2.0, you will be disappointed. It looks like Gmail's dark mode requires Android 10 and won't work on Samsung devices running Pie. That's evidenced by the fact that two of our Galaxy S10s running the One UI 2.0 beta show the dark mode option in Gmail but not any of our Galaxy phones — including the Galaxy Note 10 — that are still on Android Pie. That's a bit unfortunate considering Gmail is one of the most used Google apps, even though it makes complete sense that the maker of the Android operating system requires a device to be on the

T-Mobile Galaxy Tab S4 gets Bixby Voice and Call & Message Continuity

Image
The Galaxy Tab S4 offered in the US by T-Mobile is finally getting one of the features that were promised at launch, namely Bixby Voice. The software package also introduces Call & Message Continuity support and includes the August 2019 security patch . Bixby Voice and Call & Message Continuity rolled out on the unlocked Galaxy Tab S4 worldwide in late August along with the July 2019 security patch. T-Mobile's release comes with a newer security patch but the feature list is otherwise the same. The update is identified as baseband version T837TUVU3BSI1 and weighs a little under 700MB. T-Mobile Galaxy Tab S4 finally getting Bixby Voice The Galaxy Tab S4 doesn't come with a dedicated Bixby button, and back when the tablet was officially unveiled, Samsung confirmed that it  will gain Bixby Voice support along with a future Android Pie release. But Android Pie came and went and the Galaxy S4 did not receive Bixby Voice. This wasn't entirely surprising given h

A few banks take measures in light of Galaxy S10 fingerprint sensor flaw

Image
A few banking institutions in the UK have decided to temporarily disable support for Galaxy S10 and Note 10 devices in light of the biometric security issues that came to light last week. The issue involves the in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor employed by both flagship series and some third-party silicone cases that can allow unauthorized users to unlock the devices. You can read more about the issue in Samsung's official statement on the matter. Banking institutions are temporarily halting S10/Note 10 support Samsung is already working on a software fix that should disallow unauthorized people from unlocking Galaxy S10 or Note 10 units with their unregistered fingerprints. Until then, two UK banking institutions, namely NatWest and Nationwide Building Society, have taken measures to prevent unauthorized transfers from taking place. Specifically, NatWest has made its mobile banking app unobtainable by Galaxy S10/Note 10 users via the Play Store. Meanwhile, Nati

Samsung offers a sneak-peek into its SDC 2019 sessions

Image
Samsung will be hosting its sixth annual Samsung Developer Conference (SDC) in San Jose , California, from October 29-30. With only a few days left for the event, the company has published a preview of the important sessions that will be held during the two-day conference. This year's emphasis will be on AI, Bixby , 5G, security, enterprise solutions, IoT, etc. The sessions about Bixby will focus on the opportunities, building conversational experiences, and the marketplace for Bixby capsules. 5G-related sessions, on the other hand, are a bit vaguer and will cover opportunities for B2B app development and new 5G solutions for businesses. Sessions on security will touch upon Samsung's approach to blockchain, automatic security analysis tools for detecting vulnerabilities, and more. On the enterprise solutions front, SDC19 will have sessions about IBM and Samsung's partnership and the Knox Partner Program. On the IoT side of things, Samsung will talk about the next phase

Samsung patent reveals full-blown, recent AR headset design

Image
A relatively fresh design patent application reveals a full-blown render of an AR headset from Samsung. The Korean company seems poised to keep up with some of the other (future) players in the augmented reality space. Samsung AR headset Rumors about Samsung working on its own AR headset date back years . In the meantime, the Gear VR came and went, with the Galaxy Note 10 notably lacking VR support . Still, clear signs have been pointing to Samsung taking the AR route for some time, and with competitors like Apple expected to launch an AR headset in the not-so-distant future, we can expect Samsung to keep up. A fresh, recent patent goes a long way to support this expectation. The guys at  GalaxyClub are now pointing to a design patent published days ago in South Korea, titled  Head Mounted Display. The  application for the patent was filed in February of this year, so we are getting a relatively fresh look at what is cooking in Samsung's kitchen. Plus, we are treated to

Samsung to increase OLED supply for Apple’s newest iPhone

Image
Once again, Samsung is the main supplier of OLED panels for Apple's iPhone . The Cupertino-based company recently launched its new iPhones and is now working hard to sell as many units as possible. It appears that there's stiff demand for the new devices as Samsung is reportedly going to increase OLED supply for the newest iPhones. According to reports, Samsung Display is now expected to ship up to 50 million OLED display panels for the iPhone in the second half of this year. Samsung Display may supply up to 50 million iPhone OLED panels Samsung's display affiliate is currently the primary supplier of OLED panels for Samsung. It accounts for 90 percent of all OLED supplies for the iPhone, this includes newer models like the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max as well. The models with LCD displays have panels from the likes of LG Display and Sharp. Apple has brought on LG Display as an OLED screen vendor as well. It's supplying a fraction of the OLED panels for the iPhone 11

Galaxy S8 Active gets October security update on T-Mobile

Image
It was a little over a month ago that the Galaxy S8 Active was finally updated to Android 9 Pie by T-Mobile , but the carrier didn't just stop there. It released a new update a couple of weeks later to bring the September security patch to the device, and it is now rolling out an update that bundles the October 2019 security patch . The update comes with build number  G892USQS5CSI5 . Since the Galaxy S8 Active was only recently updated with a newer version of Android, it shouldn't come as a surprise as the latest update doesn't bring any new features . Quite a few of those are packed into Android Pie, as you can see in our One UI feature focus series of articles , and T-Mobile is back to focusing on pushing out security updates to the last Galaxy S Active smartphone. For those wondering, the Galaxy S8 Active is not eligible for the One UI 2.0 update, even if a recent benchmark showing the Galaxy S8 running Android 10 suggests that Samsung may finally be bringing three

Galaxy A51 spotted on Geekbench with Android 10, Exynos 9611 chipset

Image
The Galaxy A51 has made an appearance on the Geekbench benchmark database, revealing some of its specs. As expected, the A51 runs Android 10, suggesting its release will come sometime after the Galaxy S11 next year. However, with other 2020 A series phones, like the Galaxy A71 , also in testing with Android 10, it's possible Samsung is going to turn things around and launch non-flagship devices with the latest version of the OS ahead of the next Galaxy S flagship. And it makes sense, considering how well the 2019 Galaxy A series phones have done in various markets. The flagship phone segment has been slowing down in recent years while the mid-range segment has grown, and if Samsung intends to launch the Galaxy A51 before the Galaxy S11, the latest software out of the box would be an excellent attraction for many consumers. In fact, Android 10 might be one of the key highlights of the A51, as the Geekbench entry says it runs on the Exynos 9611 chipset that powers the Galaxy A50s

One UI 2.0 feature focus: Record the screen using built-in screen recorder

Image
With One UI 2.0 , one of the most underrated features that debuted on the Galaxy Note 10 is making its way to the Galaxy S10 and other Galaxy devices that will be updated to Android 10. You can now record the screen using the built-in screen recorder instead of downloading third-party solutions or by tricking other Samsung apps . The built-in screen recorder doesn't just record what's on the screen for you. You can record sounds picked up by the phone's microphone and audio played on the device, add a video selfie feed that can be moved around freely, and even doodle on the screen while recording is active. Screen recording can be started via the dedicated toggle in the notification shade, but we won't go into further details of how the screen recorder works, as we already have an excellent guide for the feature  that you can check out. Below is a short screen recording from the Galaxy S10 if you're interested in seeing a sample. To find out what else is new

Samsung teases Galaxy Note 10 One UI 2.0 beta program in Korea

Image
Samsung Korea has revealed that the Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta program for the Galaxy Note 10 5G and Galaxy Note 10+ 5G is coming soon. The Galaxy Note 10 beta program was originally scheduled for October 21 , but as we reported yesterday, Samsung's customer care representatives are now saying that it has been delayed until October 24 . And that may well be the actual date now that the company is teasing the beta, at least if there are no further delays. This is, in fact, the first time Samsung has officially said that the Galaxy Note 10 duo will be getting an Android 10 beta. It was something we already knew thanks to our sources and because the Galaxy Note 9 was included in the One UI beta based on Android Pie last year, but it's always good to see confirmation from the horse's mouth. Along with South Korea, the beta should also be available in Germany , Poland, Spain, France, India, China, the UK, and the US, just like the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta program. It
