A digital jobs program to help America's economic recovery

Image
Technology has been a lifeline to help many small businesses during the COVID-19 crisis. And online tools can help people get new skills and find good-paying jobs. Nearly two-thirds of all new jobs created since 2010 require either high-level or medium-level digital skills. This presents a challenge for many job seekers, as well as to America's long-term economic security. People need good jobs, and the broader economy needs their energy and skills to support our future growth.  College degrees are out of reach for many Americans, and you shouldn't need a college diploma to have economic security. We need new, accessible job-training solutions—from enhanced vocational programs to online education—to help America recover and rebuild. Our Grow with Google initiative helps people get the skills they need to get a job or grow their business.  Today we're announcing a new suite of Google Career Certificates that will help Americans get qualifications in high-payi

Galaxy Note 20, Note 20 Ultra camera differences illustrated in new leak

Image
The camera housings found on the back of the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra will look remarkably similar to each other; especially compared to their direct predecessors. That's according to a known Samsung insider close to some of the company's component suppliers based in China. As seen herein, the newly leaked side-by-side comparisons of the two smartphones' rear camera modules suggest Samsung invested some extra effort into unifying the aesthetic of the incoming Galaxy Note generation. This minor streamlining could be indicative of a broader shift in product design, just a happy accident, or something in between. However, the more uniform the final result is, the more likely it becomes for Samsung to just spill the beans on its own come early next month, or at least by the time the Galaxy Note 20 family releases in late August . Three more weeks, two more Galaxy Notes The Galaxy Note 20 Ultra was previously rumored to include a 108MP main camera supporte

July 2020 security update now deploying to Galaxy S9/S9+

Image
The first over-the-air update to hit the  Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ in the lineup's One UI 2.1 era is the security update dated to the first of this month. Containing the latest vulnerability fixes from both Google and Samsung, the unsurprising release already started making its way to the Exynos variants of the devices last week. The packages are identified by firmware versions G960FXXUAETG3 and G965FXXUAETG3. Likely included in this release are some minor bug fixes, performance enchantments, or both, based on Samsung's semantic practices which seem to suggest a more diverse OTA download than one containing just a sole security level upgrade. Galaxy S9 series enters final phase of life cycle Samsung's software updates are always gradual to deploy, especially for widely owned devices like its annual Galaxy S-series flagships. The wait shouldn't be too long overall, depending on your exact model and location, but things don't seem to be moving that quickly a

Galaxy A01 Core sets sights on yet another market

Image
The Galaxy A01 Core has been going through the usual regulatory motions ahead of commercial release for a while now, and its latest certification points to yet another launch market Samsung appears to be targeting with this decisively ultra-budget smartphone. That would be Thailand, as indicated by a newly spotted product certificate issued by the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission. More concretely, the Bangkok authority attested the SM-A013G/DS variant, with that name itself reconfirming dual-SIM support. This appears to be a localized iteration whose availability is likely to be extremely limited. Internationally, the Galaxy A01 Core will launch as the SM-A013F/DS, based on previous developments. If all of this seems familiar, that's because it is It remains to be seen why Samsung is releasing an even lower-end device than the original Galaxy A01 , especially given the more recent debut of the Galaxy M01 (not to be confused with the upcoming Galaxy M01

Galaxy S20 Fan Edition benchmark reveals its Snapdragon 865 chipset

Image
We exclusively revealed a month ago that Samsung is working on a new version of the Galaxy S20 that's going to take over the Galaxy S Lite lineup . The handset is being developed under model number SM-G780 (Global) and SM-G781 (US). Samsung is referred to this device as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition internally. There was some confusion about its specs initially, particularly about the chipset it would end up using. The Galaxy S20 Fan Edition has now surfaced on Geekbench where it has revealed its Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset. Galaxy S20 Fan Edition will be paired with the SD865 It's not surprising to see that Samsung is going to utilize the Snapdragon 865 for this watered-down Galaxy S20. The SD865 is a bonafide flagship processor, in case you forgot, it's the one that powers the Galaxy S20 lineup in select markets. Hopefully, Samsung would do what it did with the Galaxy S10 Lite and not split the device in Snapdragon/Exynos variants. The Galaxy S10 Lite was shipp

Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra might just keep the Exynos 990

Image
The Snapdragon 865+ was recently announced by Qualcomm . This chip is expected to power select variants of the Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra that will be released in a few markets like the United States. Samsung will use its own Exynos chip elsewhere like it always has. However, reports suggest that the company will use the same Exynos 990 processor as the Galaxy S20 lineup. This contradicts earlier reports about an improved Exynos 992 chip for the Galaxy Note 20 . Samsung fans are not going to like this It's no secret that the Exynos 990 clearly wasn't as good enough as the Snapdragon 865, the chip that powered the Galaxy S20 lineup in the US. Samsung also released the Snapdragon 865-powered variant in its home market of South Korea, a move that caused "humiliation" to the Exynos team . The Exynos 992 was expected to bridge the performance gap to Qualcomm's chip . The 6nm chip was said to be more power-efficient as well while posting 1-3% high

Samsung phone parts worth over $330,000 stolen during transport

Image
Mobile phone parts are worth a great deal of money and it's not uncommon for them to get stolen. Most heists take place when large quantities of parts are being moved to warehouses. Given the scale at which Samsung manufactures devices, it has parts worth tens of millions of dollars on the road at any given moment. One such shipment was hit by six people in Noida, India. Samsung's largest mobile phone manufacturing facility in terms of production capacity is located here. The parts were stolen from a vehicle carrying them to a warehouse. All of the stolen parts have been recovered Police in Noida has arrested six people, including three truck drivers, for allegedly stealing Samsung's mobile phone parts. The value of these parts is said to be INR 25 million which is the equivalent of just over $330,000 at prevailing exchange rates. Fortunately for Samsung, none of its parts were lost. The police have recovered 56 boxes that contain all of the stolen parts. The prima

Has Samsung decided to delay the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launch?

Image
Samsung is preparing to launch an almost insane number of new products in the coming weeks. There's the Galaxy Note 20 series, the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7+, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, and a 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip, along with the Galaxy Buds Live and Galaxy Watch 3 , sequels to the Galaxy Buds+ and 2018's Galaxy Watch. We had exclusively reported that the new wearables will be separately launched sometime in July, and it seems Samsung is also going to space out the announcement of its new foldable. Galaxy Z Fold 2 launch unlikely on August 5 XDA Developers' Max Weinbach tweeted over the weekend that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is not going to be launched at Samsung's virtual August 5 Unpacked event. He also says in a follow-up tweet that the software for the device isn't "close to ready for a September launch". If true, this means that we will only see the Galaxy Note 20 series, Galaxy Tab S7/S7+, and Galaxy Z Flip 5G on August 5, which is a good thing

Galaxy Buds Live support page appears on Samsung’s website

Image
We had exclusively reported last month that Samsung will unveil its upcoming true wireless earbuds, the Galaxy Buds Live , in July. The design and some features of the earbuds have already been leaked. Now, a support page for the wireless earbuds has appeared on Samsung's own website, confirming that they're coming soon. A support page for the Galaxy Buds Live with model number SM-R180 has appeared on Samsung Korea's website. While the webpage doesn't reveal images or specifications of the upcoming earbuds, it confirms the existence of the Galaxy Buds Live and hints that they're launching soon. The earbuds had recently appeared in FCC's database . The Galaxy Buds Live are shaped like a kidney bean and feature three microphones on each side for active noise cancellation . They will be launched in three colors: Black, Mystic Bronze, and White. It is also being expected that the upcoming earbuds feature a built-in music player and wireless charging. They

Samsung to spend $83.2 million in 2020 to develop better chip and display tech

Image
Samsung has announced that it plans to spend KRW 100 billion (around $83.2 million) to boost the cooperation between academia and the industry so that better display and semiconductor technologies could be developed. The South Korean tech giant also said that it plans to expand its academia-industry cooperation program in the field of basic sciences such as mathematics and physics. The company had opened the Industrial-Academy Cooperation Center in July 2018, and it is now celebrating its second anniversary. The cooperation center has supported research projects of more than 700 Ph.D. scholars, students, and university professors since its inception. Samsung's program allows local universities to use the company's advanced chip equipment for research projects. Samsung Electronics said that its latest investment would help researchers at local universities whose projects have been delayed or suspended for the past few months due to the COVID-19 situation. Samsung could source LCD display panels from LG

Image
After Samsung Display announced its plans to stop the production of LCD panels completely , it was being reported that Sharp will carry on the duty to supply LCD panels to Samsung Electronics. However, Sharp alone can't provide enough panels to fulfill Samsung's needs. Now, it is being reported that Samsung is planning to source LCD displays from LG Display. According to a new report coming out of South Korea, Samsung Electronics is in talks with LG Display for the purchase of LCD panels for its affordable TVs. A deal may be signed in the near future, and LG's supply volume could be worth anywhere between KRW 1 trillion (around $832.91 million) and KRW 1 trillion (around $1.66 billion). Earlier, it was being predicted by industry insiders that Samsung could source LCD panels from Chinese firms, China Star Optoelectronics and BOE, and from Taiwanese firm Sharp (now owned by Foxconn). However, it looks like Samsung prefers its rival LG over other firms. LG Display plan

Galaxy Note 8 gets July security update ahead of Galaxy Note 20 launch

Image
Everyone at Samsung is probably busy preparing for the upcoming Galaxy Note 20 launch , but that hasn't stopped the company from continuing to push out security updates to its existing Note flagships. The Galaxy Note 8 has been getting security updates regularly these last couple of months , and it's now getting another new update. This one brings with it the July 2020 security patch. The Galaxy Note 8 is nearly three years old at this point , so it won't surprise you that the new update has nothing except the latest security patch to offer. The July patch brings fixes for four critical Android OS vulnerabilities and 17 vulnerabilities that Samsung discovered in its own software. It also fixes a bug that would cause a phone to restart or get stuck in a boot loop when a certain kind of wallpaper was applied. Galaxy M01 Core may simply be a rebadged Galaxy A01 Core

Image
If you remember the  Galaxy A01 / M01 line which hit a variety of markets over the first half of this year, Samsung is now following up on it with an even lower-end device posing as a pairing – the Galaxy M01 Core , which reports suggest could simply be a rebranded  Galaxy A01 Core . Samsung will most likely end up using separate monikers in different markets. It may depend on which particular brand has more recognition in a specific market. Under the hood, though, the device is actually going to be one and the same. Galaxy M01 Core may not be a separate device A newly spotted  revision of Google Play API documentation shows the Galaxy M01 Core bearing model number SM-M013F listed as "a01core". This suggests that both of these handsets are actually the same and that they will only be launched under separate brand names in different markets. We exclusively confirmed the Galaxy A01 Core specs yesterday. The handset will feature a 5.3-inch 1480×720 resolution LCD displ

Watch the Galaxy Z Flip 5G dancing around in new leaked video

Image
It's no secret that Samsung is going to launch a 5G variant of the Galaxy Z Flip . It initially made the LTE version available of its first clamshell foldable smartphone. The company will now be looking to capture customers who would prefer having 5G support on the handset as well. The Galaxy Z Flip 5G is one of the devices that's due to be launched at Samsung's virtual event next month. A newly leaked video has surfaced and it shows us a good minute of the Galaxy Z Flip 5G just dancing around to capture your attention. This is the Galaxy Z Flip in Mystic Bronze These are the videos that you'll find playing on preview units of new devices, you know, the ones that are installed at kiosks in stores for you to check out. It obviously shows nothing out of the ordinary as Samsung isn't making any substantial design changes to this device. It's still the same clamshell foldable smartphone with the same tiny 1.1-inch cover display and 6.7-inch Infinity Flex dis

Galaxy A51 5G is Samsung’s best gaming mid-ranger but there’s one issue

Image
We have discussed previously how Samsung's 2020 Galaxy A series pushes the envelope on affordable phones . The Galaxy A21s , Galaxy A31 , Galaxy A41 and the Galaxy A51 LTE/5G are going to see the most interest from customers. Granted, there are other handsets in this year's lineup, but these will cater to most customers. Samsung is offering something for everyone with the 2020 Galaxy A series. These four devices are particularly well-rounded. They offer specs that are comparable, and in some cases, better than their direct competitors. Samsung has also competitively priced these devices to make them more attainable. Mobile gaming has seen explosive growth in its popularity over the past decade. Now, most people are more interested in whether the device they're thinking about buying can play their favorite game than perhaps anything else. Mid-range smartphones have to walk a tightrope as they have to balance both the customers' expectations in this regard while als
