Galaxy S8 Tip: How to activate Download Booster

Image
We honestly believe that Download Booster is one of the most underrated features Samsung bakes into its version of Android. For those unaware, the software tweak allows your device to download applications and files that exceed 30MB  a lot  faster by using LTE and Wi-Fi connections simultaneously. Download Booster has been available on Galaxy devices for a long time, but Samsung no longer notifies users about the feature, so it can go unnoticed for most folks. Here’s how you can enable it on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+: Step 1:  Open up  Settings  and select Connections . Step 2:  Press More Connection Settings . Step 3: Locate  Download Booster,  then flick the toggle to  On . If you happen to run into a spot of bother, simply let us know in the comments section below and we’ll try to get you back on the right track. If all goes according to plan (and there’s no reason it shouldn’t), be sure to check out our other Galaxy S8 tips and tricks  to get the most out of your shiny

Samsung SDI expands presence in Europe with new battery plant in Hungary

In an effort to expand the presence of Samsung SDI in Europe, Samsung has finished turning a former production line for plasma display panels in Hungary into a battery plant for electric vehicles. According to  The Korea Herald , Samsung SDI plans to use the plant in Hungary as “a base to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles [in the region], and produce a synergy effect with its plants in Xian, China, and Ulsan in Korea.” At a completion ceremony held on Monday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban publicly thanked Samsung for investing in Goed, the city where the plant is located, and assured the firm that the government is supportive of its business. “For the first time, the state-of-the-art technology of Samsung SDI will be applied to batteries to be made in this plant in Hungary,” said Jun Young-hyun, head of Samsung SDI. “Batteries are one of the most important parts supplied to global car makers. “I expect the plant to contribute to the growth of the European e

Galaxy S6 edge Plus receives May security patch in Europe

Image
The factory unlocked variant of the Galaxy S6 edge Plus in Europe has started receiving this month’s security maintenance update, reveals several reports. The upgrade — G928FXXS3CQE4 — appears to be identical to the one that started making the rounds for the Galaxy A5 (2017) two weeks ago, addressing a total of 54 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS. Read more:  Samsung details contents of May security patch Like usual, the OTA is rolling out in stages (country-by-country), so it could take a while to arrive on your Galaxy S6 edge Plus . If you’d like to manually see if the update is ready for your device, open up  Settings , navigate into  Software Update , then press  Download Updates Manually . If it’s not, don’t panic: it should arrive by the end of the week. Via

High-end W2017 clamshell successor potentially spotted at TENAA

Image
Samsung may be working on a successor to its high-end W2017 flip phone. Earlier today, a handset — dubbed the W2018 — was spotted on Chinese telecommunication authority TENAA’s online database. The documentation reveals that the W2018, which carries the model number SM-G9298 , sports two 4.2-inch Full HD displays, a Snapdragon 821AB chipset, 4GB of RAM, a 12MP camera and a 2,300mAh non-removable battery. Overall, it’s a pretty minor upgrade from its predecessor (in fact, the only thing that’s changed is the processor), leading many to believe that it’s a revamped model of the W017 for the European market, and not a successor. While that could be the case, it’s unlikely seeing as people actually want to purchase high-end Android clamshell smartphones in China and South Korea, but demand appears to be non-existent in countries like England and France. T-Mobile releases May security patch for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge

Just a few days after it started rolling out the May 2017 security patch for the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+ , T-Mobile has now released said security patch for the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The company went ahead with the release on a holiday weekend in the United States so it may come as a bit of a surprise to users. Since these devices have already been updated to Android 7.0 Nougat by T-Mobile, it’s not like users will get much in the way of new features. This update only brings the May 2017 security patch alongside system-wide tweaks and improvements. T-Mobile is rolling out firmware version G930TUVS4BQE1 for the Galaxy S7 and G935TUVS4BQE1 for the Galaxy S7 edge. Once the update is installed, users will see that their devices are on the May 1, 2017 Android security patch level. The May security patch for Samsung devices fixes 54 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) in the Android OS and also brings fixes for 11 vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s own software

Samsung’s $13,000 refrigerator is made with porcelain

Image
If you’re in the market for a new refrigerator and have more money that you know what to do with, perhaps you might want to consider the new high-end refrigerator that Samsung has announced today. It’s made with porcelain materials and has thus been priced at the higher-end of the spectrum. The new refrigerator is part of Samsung’s Chef Collection. It has a unique interior design complete with Korean white porcelain. A lot of work went into developing this product. Samsung was very involved in the material discovery stage. The development and design team visited seven different countries over two years and conducted hundreds of tests to select the best materials for the Chef Collection Porcelain. It actually makes sense to use porcelain in a refrigerator. The material doesn’t have pores on its surface so it’s not prone to discoloration or smell, particularly when something like sauce or soup is spilled on it. It can easily be wiped with water to achieve that new look once again. It

Video shows Samsung’s stretchable OLED display in action

Image
Samsung unveiled the world’s first stretchable OLED display at the Society for Information Display 2017 in Los Angeles. The company says that it’s a unique display because it can bend in both directions. It’s unlike flexible panels that Samsung has shown off in the past that can only bend in one direction. The company has claimed that its stretchable OLED display can be stretched by up to 12 millimeters when pressure is applied without losing a high degree of resolution. A 9.1-inch version of this display was showcased at SID 2017 last week. Samsung Display has now posted a video on its official YouTube channel which shows the stretchable display in action. We can see that when the screen is pressed from above, it depresses like a rubber balloon and returns to its original flat shape. There’s enough elasticity in the panel to recover even when it’s stretched up or down. The company says that it has developed this new technology with a high level of scalability with the ability to

Samsung says the Galaxy S8 is selling twice as fast as the Galaxy S7

Image
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on March 29 and then released the new flagship in select markets across the globe on April 21. The initial response from customers has been good. Samsung was able to bring in more than one million pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 in its home country of South Korea which was a new record for the company. It has now revealed that the Galaxy S8 is selling twice as fast as the Galaxy S7 in South Korea. The company has confirmed that ever since it launched the Galaxy S8 in South Korea on April 21, it has sold more than one million units of the handset. “The phone’s predecessors S6 and S7 hit the 1 million mark in 75 and 74 days since their launch, respectively. The S8 is selling almost two times faster than that,” a Samsung official said. Samsung has seen a similar response from customers across the globe who really have taken a liking to its new flagship device. The company recently revealed that global shipments of the Galaxy S8 have exceed

Leaked images show it will be easy to spot a refurbished Galaxy Note 7

Image
Samsung confirmed a few months back that it’s going to release a refurbished variant of the Galaxy Note 7 in select markets across the globe. It’s going to be the same handset that was recalled but with a smaller battery. Samsung is yet to confirm what it’s going to call the device and how much it’s going to cost. Reports suggest that the refurbished Galaxy Note 7 may be called the Galaxy Note FE or “Fan Edition.” Again, no confirmation from Samsung about this as yet. If the latest leaked images are believed, it may be very easy to differentiate a refurbished unit from an original Galaxy Note 7 unit. The Galaxy Note FE may have a big “R” symbol at the back on the bottom to denote that it’s a refurbished unit. It will enable people to ascertain at a glance whether or not it’s a genuinely refurbished unit. This is something we’ve seen in a previous leak as well so the likelihood of this happening is increasing. Samsung is yet to confirm when we can expect the refurbished Galaxy

Samsung heads to Cuba, opens brand shop in Havana

Image
Cuba, best known for the 1950s-era cars that line the streets of Havana and its legendary cigars, hasn’t really evolved as a lucrative market for consumer electronics. The country itself has to progress considerably before most of its citizens are able to spend a good amount of money on consumer electronic devices. The market is opening up, albeit gradually. New business opportunities have came up following the thaw in the country’s relations with the United States a couple of years ago. Others who kept themselves out of this market have started to take notice as well. Samsung announced today that it has opened a brand shop in Havana, Cuba’s capital. It’s a very rare move by Samsung as it’s making a full-fledged entry into the market. Samsung has opened its brand shop in Havana in cooperation with a local retailer Cadena De Tiendas TRD Caribe. TRD is a major retailer in Cuba. It accounts for over 50 percent of the sales in Cuba’s electronics market, so Samsung has a good partner i

Samsung Galaxy C10 renders surface online, showcase the company’s first dual-camera smartphone

It seems to feature a 5.5-inch display and a fingerprint sensor at the front. There’s a USB Type-C port, 3.5mm headphone jack, microphone, and loudspeaker at the bottom. Apart from the power button and the volume rocker, there appears to be a dedicated Bixby Button as well. You can also have a look at the 360-degree render video of the upcoming higher mid-range smartphone below the image gallery. What do you think of the

Samsung will sell you a 75-inch QLED TV for $10,000

Image
Samsung’s QLED TV series was launched earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show 2017 in Las Vegas. Over the past few months, the company has made its QLED TV series available in suitable markets across the globe. The company is adding a couple of models to this lineup today. The latest additions include a massive 75-inch QLED TV that Samsung will be happy to sell you for a staggering $10,000. Samsung has launched flat and curved-screen models of the 75-inch QLED TV in South Korea, called the Q7 and Q8 respectively, Samsung is yet to confirm when these models will be made available elsewhere and what the price is going to be. Prices for these new models start at 10.4 million won or $9,292 in South Korea. That’s certainly a lot more than what the average consumer will be willing on spend on a television. But then again, it’s not like there’s not a market for super-expensive televisions. All models feature Samsung’s quantum dot technology which enables the TVs to deliver vivi

Over 3 million people visited Samsung’s Galaxy S8 experience zones

Image
Samsung’s marketing push for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 appears to be paying off. The company has set up experience zones across its home country of South Korea where people can come and test the company’s latest flagship smartphone. Samsung has said today that since these experience zones were set up last month, more than 3 million people have visited them. The company also confirmed last week that it had sold over a million units of the Galaxy S8 after launch. The new flagship proved to be a record-breaker for the company as it brought in more than one million pre-orders in early April . The Galaxy S8 has hit the million sales figure in South Korea far more quickly than the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S7 ever did, they achieved the milestone in 75 and 74 days respectively. Samsung also confirmed recently that it has sold more than 5 million unit of the Galaxy S8 globally since launch. Strong sales of the Galaxy S8 are expected to have a visible positive impact on the company’s balance s

Samsung considers increasing memory chip production capacity at its China plant

To cash in on the industry-wide boom for memory chips, Samsung is reportedly considering to increase the production capacity at its plant in China. The semiconductor giant could increase the memory chip production at its Xi’an plant in the Shaanxi Province in central China, but no specifics have been reported as of now. Samsung had already invested $7 billion in its Xi’an plant for manufacturing 3D NAND chips The company’s spokesman did not divulge any information about potential investment amount or what products would be made using the additional resources at its chip plant in Xi’an. However, South Korean media is reporting that the company is in advanced talks with Chinese authorities to add 3D NAND chip production capacity and that the construction could begin before the end of this year. Samsung and other memory chip companies are expected to enjoy record revenue and profits, thanks to the booming demand for processing, storage, and memory chips used in consumer electronics such

Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge receive May security patch in Europe

Those who own the Galaxy Note 4 or the Galaxy Note Edge in Europe will soon receive an over-the-air update notification if they haven’t already. As it turns out, Samsung is rolling out the latest May security patch for both the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge. These devices were first released by Samsung over two years ago. Firmware version N910FXXU1DQE2 is now being rolled by Samsung for the Galaxy Note 5. The Galaxy Note Edge gets firmware version N915FYXXS1DQE1 . Both feature the May security patch and other minor tweaks. This isn’t a big update so there are no features that come as part and parcel of this update. Samsung detailed the May security patch for its devices a couple of weeks back. It brings patches for 54 vulnerabilities found in Google’s Android OS while Samsung has fixed some 11 bugs in its own software. Since both devices are over two years old, it’s not like they are in line to receive any major Android OS updates over the following years. Samsung will cont

Galaxy S8 Japan release confirmed for June

After unveiling the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ on March 29, Samsung released the new flagship in a handful of markets across the globe on April 21. Since then, the company has gradually been releasing its new device in additional markets. Earlier this week it finally launched the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in China . Samsung has now confirmed that the Galaxy S8 Japan release is going to take place next month. The company will be looking to regain consumer confidence that it lost after the Galaxy Note 7 debacle. Japan is one of the best markets for Apple’s iPhone so Samsung’s new flagship is going to have a Herculean task on its hands if it wants to win over customers from the iPhone. To get the word out about its new device, Samsung is going to conduct various promotional events throughout Japan for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. A precise release date has not yet been provided but apparently, the handsets will be released in the country by early June. The Japanese market is dominated by
