If a new Motorola RAZR is released this summer, I’m gonna need one

Image
A foldable smartphone version of the Motorola RAZR was tipped to be released this summer. As we've seen in patent filings over the last couple of years, the next RAZR phone likely takes advantage of the foldable display tech in a way that's different from other solutions that've been revealed in recent weeks. The Motorola RAZR, if what we're seeing … Continue reading #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

Google Maps selecting Local Guides for AR navigation ‘early access’ on both Android and iOS

Image
Earlier this month, Google provided the first demo of AR navigation in Maps for Android and announced that Local Guides will be the first users to gain access. Google this week is now reaching out to Local Guides on both Android and iOS. AR navigation in Google Maps overlays walking directions and business listings over a live camera view. It is aimed at addressing how GPS is notoriously inaccurate in urban environments by making the camera another sensor as part of a Visual Positioning Service (VPS). While the first demos and  technical details  were provided this month, Google is heavily emphasizing that more testing is required, and did not commit to wider availability. The company is previewing with Local Guides that are prolific reviewers in Google Maps and frequently add photos, answer questions, or fix listings. This week, Google began reaching out to some Local Guides for "early access." The program has a tiered system of 10 levels and only higher-

Huawei Mate X too expensive? Then it's waiting for honor.

Image
At MWC 2019, Huawei presented the Mate X, the company's first foldable smartphone. But this is also supposed to cost a whopping 2,299 euros (about $2,620). But luckily Honor is also working on a folding smartphone, which will probably be much cheaper. As Honor CEO George Zhao reveals in an interview with Cnet, Honor is already working on its own folding smartphone. However, there are concerns at present, as production costs are still very high and the brand has a very young target group. Therefore, unlike other manufacturers, one cannot simply pass on the price to the customer and drive it up and wait until such a telephone can be sold cheaply. However, with more and more foldable smartphones on the market the production costs are also likely to decrease and then so can the price. And it's not supposed to take that long. According to Zhao, the manufacturer plans to launch the first Honor smartphone with a foldable display as ear

Motorola's Moto G7 Is An Insane Value & Now Available For $299

Image
The Motorola Moto G7 is now available for purchase, after a relatively short pre-order period. The Moto G7 is priced at $299 for 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Motorola announced the Moto G7 earlier this month, as the seventh-generation of its popular mid-range smartphone lineup. It is a nice upgrade over last year's Moto G6, with a pretty modest bump in price. The Moto G7 has a 6.2-inch full HD+ display, however, it does have a tear-drop notch included. Other specs for the Moto G7 include the Snapdragon 632 chipset, with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There is still a micro SD card slot available, and Adoptable Storage is also included. This is all powered by a 3,000mAh capacity battery. Motorola has outfitted the Moto G7 with a 12-megapixel main sensor and a 5-megapixel depth sensor on the backside. The front houses the 8-megapixel selfie camera. The Moto G7 is running Android 9 Pie, and as has been the case in the past with Motorola, it is a stock version of Android wi

Android Security Improvement update: Helping developers harden their apps, one thwarted vulnerability at a time

Image
Posted by Patrick Mutchler and Meghan Kelly , Android Security & Privacy Team Helping Android app developers build secure apps, free of known vulnerabilities, means helping the overall ecosystem thrive. This is why we launched the Application Security Improvement Program five years ago, and why we're still so invested in its success today. What the Android Security Improvement Program does When an app is submitted to the Google Play store, we scan it to determine if a variety of vulnerabilities are present. If we find something concerning, we flag it to the developer and then help them to remedy the situation. Think of it like a routine physical. If there are no problems, the app runs through our normal tests and continues on the process to being published in the Play Store. If there is a problem, however, we provide a diagnosis and next steps to get back to healthy form. Over its lifetime, the program has helped more than 300,000 developers to fix more than 1,000,

Blizzard announces Hearthstone's next expansion will begin the Year of the Dragon

Image
... Blizzard has announced the new yearly rotation for Hearthstone, and it's called the Year of the Dragon. The next expansion to release in 2019 will signal the beginning of this newly-announced year. Over the next twelve months, three new 130-card expansions will be coming our way, and each one will be tied to the last thanks to a continuous story that will span across all three. VIDEO The above video goes in depth about what you can expect from the Year of the Dragon. The big reveal is that there will now be an overarching story that ties together all three of this year's upcoming expansions. Another interesting tidbit is that the first card set released this year will bring a free single player experience along with it, though if you want more single-player content past that free taste, you'll have to pay for it. It also seems clear that a few Classic and Basic cards will be rebalanced. Whenever the first expansion lands this year (mo

Poll: Screen Protector or Nah?

Image
Big news this morning, folks – Samsung is going to include a factory pre-installed screen protector on all variants of the Galaxy S10. OnePlus did the same thing with the OnePlus 6T and likely for the same reason as Samsung. Since these new phones have in-display fingerprint readers, these companies only trust their own in-house protectors to work properly with them. They also want you to buy them at $29.99 a piece because 💵. Anyways, this news got me digging in our older polls to see if we've ever asked the DL community if screen protectors are in or not. As it turns out, we've never done a poll on this subject. I don't how that is possible, but we are changing that today! More on Samsung's Galaxy S10 screen protectors Readers of this fine website, are you down with screen protectors? Do you use them on your phones? Do you leave the pre-installed, super icky plastic ones on devices? Do you buy fancy glass protectors for that extra, extra protection? Or do

Google Play has flagged 1 million Android apps for pre-release security issues in 5 years

Image
One way Google ensures safety on the Play Store is by scanning apps that developers upload for common security vulnerabilities. Now five years old, Google is providing an update on the progress of the Application Security Improvement Program. When developers upload a new version of an application to the Play Console, Google will automatically scan it for "potential security enhancements" and provide "recommendations for building more secure apps." If the former is detected, devs will occasionally have to address issues before an app can be published or updated. This includes specific vulnerabilities like bugs in popular libraries or unsafe TLS/SSL certificate validation. In 2018, Google added six additional security vulnerability classes, with the full list also available: SQL Injection File-based Cross-Site Scripting Cross-App Scripting Leaked Third-Party Credentials Scheme Hijacking JavaScript Interface Injection Since launching fiv

How retention helps make Google more representative

Image
My mother was the first African American bank teller in my hometown in North Carolina in the 1960s. As you can imagine, this came with a lot of challenges. Team lunches and office holiday parties were sometimes hosted at racially segregated restaurants where they wouldn't serve my mother, and customers refused to work with her because of the color of her skin. Though these experiences were disconcerting for her, she stayed at the bank for more than 20 years where she progressed her career, helped transition the bank to a more inclusive workplace and paved the way for other women to take on similar roles. Her story left an imprint on me. While she persevered through these challenges, she could have just as easily left. How would that have affected her career, the culture of the bank and its community and the experiences of people who worked there after her? How would her experience have been different if she wasn't the only one? These questions fuel my work to address dive

Sling is offering new subscribers 40% off their first three months of service

Image
... Internet TV services are already a cost-effective alternative to traditional cable, and Sling is making its offering even more so for new customers. For a limited time, new subscribers get a 40 percent discount on their first three months of service. Sling's Orange and Blue packages — Orange has more sports channels, notably ESPN; Blue has a wider variety of other content — are normally $25 per month, but are currently $15 for the first three. You can get all the channels from both in a bundle for $25 for the first three months (then $40 per month afterwards). Add-ons, like additional comedy channels and DVR storage, are still $5 a month. Forty percent off adds up to a savings of $30 over the course of three months for either of the lesser packages, or $45 on the Orange & Blue bundle. Head over to Sling's website to see full channel lists and offer details. #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrd

The Bixby Button Is Now Remappable To Anything Except Google Assistant

Image
Earlier this week news broke that the first software update planned to hit the Samsung Galaxy S10+ will introduce the option to remap the Bixby physical button to launch other applications, but as it turns out the feature isn't exclusive to the upcoming flagship and has now been introduced to a number of older Samsung phones via a Bixby software update -  SamMobile reports. As of today, the latest update to Bixby allows the physical key to be remapped on smartphone models including the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S9 series, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 and Galaxy Note 9. The way it works is that it allows users to reassign one of the actions associated with the Bixby button to launch another third-party application, and users can choose either the single or double-press command to do this. The update doesn't allow remapping both options to launch two different third-party apps, so as a result the key will still serve Samsung's platform and users won't be
