What you missed last week at CordCutters.com

You can spend a fortune on a new TV. But you really don't have to. You can spend a couple thousand dollars on a TV. And if you have a couple thousand dollars to spend on a TV, by all means do it. You'll get something pretty incredible with an OLED panel. But for those of us who don't have a couple thousand dollars to spend on a TV, it's not like we have to settle for some kind of lesser class of living. You can get a really good TV for less than $1,000 these days. I've spent a few months with a 55-inch TCL 6-Series. It's $649 (retail) for the 55-inch model, and $999 for a 65-incher. 4K resolution, Dolby Vision and HD 10, and Roku built in. For a lot of folks — a whole lot of folks , seeing as how Roku TVs make up a quarter of the smart TV market these days — that's going to be plenty. No, it's not the same as Android TV or Apple TV, though you certainly can plug in a box (and set up the TV to use it by default) if you want to. It's not

Google estimated to be paying $9 billion to be Safari's default search engine

Image
... For search engines, there's nothing more lucrative than being the default provider on a popular web browser. In the past, companies have paid massive amounts of money for the position; Yahoo gave Mozilla over $300 million to be the default engine for Firefox, but the company was later outbid by Google . A new report estimates that Google's place as the default iPhone search engine is costing the company $9 billion this year. The amount of money Google is providing Apple to be the default search engine on iOS is supposed to be a tightly-guarded secret, but details leak out from time to time. As a result of Google's lawsuit with Oracle, the number from 2014 was revealed to be $1 billion . The number was based on ad revenue earned from searches on iPhones, but it's unclear if that is still the case. New estimates from analyst firm Goldman Sachs claim Google could be paying Apple as much as $9 billion in 2018, and around $12 billion next

Counterclockwise: Huawei bets on Android early and grows big quickly

Image
Huawei is currently the largest manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, but it is a very young company - it was only founded in 1987. Lenovo teases bendable phone - again

Image
... Not content to let others have all the fun in October, Lenovo has decided to tease an announcement of its own, showing off a flexible phone. If you feel like you've heard this story before, it's probably because you have; Lenovo introduced us to a bendable wrist-phone in 2016 . That concept device never made it to market so the latest news might seem like a similar PR stunt. VIDEO In a video originally posted to the company's Weibo account , what seems to be a working, bendable phone is briefly demoed. The device continues to scroll and allow touch input as it is folded into roughly an 80-degree angle. A couple of dark spots are seen on the screen. While they could simply be a result of demonstration abuse, one spot is clearly centered directly on the bend. Lenovo's post on Weibo showing the flexible phone. The translated post reads "Let's see you in October," with no mention of a particular date. There's also
