Smartwatch market grew to record size in 2018, Apple rules half of it

Image
There were 18 million smartwatches shipped in the final three months of 2018, a new record (up 56% year on year). Half of those were Apple Watches as Cupertino extends its lead over the competition. For the full year 2018 the shipments rose to 45 million units and, again, Apple accounts for half of those with 22.5 million. Fitbit is a distant second with 5.5 million and then comes Samsung with 5.3 million. Samsung actually edged out Fitbit in the final quarter as the Galaxy Watch proved popular in North America and Asia, the Galaxy Watch Active looks promising too, according to the analysts at Strategy Analytics (with blood pressure tracking being of particular interest).       Global Smartwatch Vendor Shipments       (Millions of Units) Q4 '17 2017 Q4 '18 2018       Apple 7.8 17.7 9.2 22.5       Fitbit 0.5 0.5 2.3 5.5       Samsung 0.6 3.1 2.4 5.3       Garmin 0.7 2.2 1.1 3.2       Othe

Google Maps opens up complaint form for reporting fraudulent activity on business listings

Image
One of the most used apps on your device is probably Google Maps. From navigation to information about nearby businesses, it's a huge source of information . Now, Google is introducing a complaint form for Maps which allows easy reporting of misleading or fraudulent activity. The best gifts for Android users This new form is designed (via SearchEngineLand ) to make it easy for both users and businesses to report misleading information or fraudulent activity on the name, phone number, or URL of a listing. This isn't to be used simply to correct that information when it is entered incorrectly but to ensure that information isn't being tampered with by a malicious third-party or perhaps a competitor. Specifically, the form requests that users input their full name, an email address for further contact, the name of the person or business being affected, a way to identify the affected listing, and also space for a detailed explanation of  why the

Motorola Moto G7 launches in the US (earlier than expected) as a great budget phone

Image
Earlier this month, when Motorola opened pre-orders for its new Moto G7 smartphone, it said that the device would be released on March 7. Surprisingly, though, today we received an email from the company announcing us that the phone is actually available to buy right now. At the moment, the Moto G7 is in stock only at Motorola's official website - HERE - and you can get it in either Ceramic Black or Ceramic White (these are nothing more than fancy color names, there's no ceramic used in building the device). The Motorola Moto G7 costs $299.99, free shipping (within ... #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

Bixby button remapping is rolling out to the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S9

Image
... Samsung really, really wants you to use Bixby. That's why it has included a physical button to access its woefully underpowered assistant on most phones since the Galaxy S8. Samsung has traditionally tried to prevent remapping that button, but the Galaxy S10 changed that . The official Bixby remapping feature from that phone is now spreading to Samsung's other devices. So far, owners of both the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S8 have seen the new Bixby functionality appear on their phones. It arrives via a Bixby update. So, if you put those off because you don't care about Bixby, now is the time to care a little bit. Once you've got the latest update, the settings will include an option to tie Bixby to a single or double-press of the button. Whichever of those you don't have set for Bixby can launch another app of your choosing. So, you can push Bixby to a double-press and never use it while adding something useful to the single-press. Microsoft Edge beta for Android adds picture-in-picture support

Image
We heard you like windows in your windows. The Microsoft Edge beta for Android is catching up with its iOS sibling this week, adding support for picture-in-picture mode. As with other apps sporting the feature, you'll now be able to "float" a video over the main Edge window while you continue browsing (via Windows Blog Italia ). Aside from picture-in-picture support, the latest beta version doesn't pack any other new features. Instead, you'll find the usual smattering of bug fixes and performance improvements. Here's a look at the official release notes: Thanks for using Microsoft Edge! Picture-in-Picture mode is available with this update (on devices with Android 8.0 and above). This release also includes general bug fixes and performance improvements. Google begins notifying winners of I/O 2019 ticket drawing

Image
Following the registration period for I/O 2019 closing yesterday afternoon, Google has started reaching out to selected applicants. Attendees of the annual developer conference should be receiving an email confirmation this morning. Google first teased I/O 2019 at the end of January with a very cryptic puzzle , which appears to still be unsolved. On February 21, the registration process opened and it ran until yesterday at 5PM PST. Now at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, California for the fourth year in a row, ticket recipients will be charged $1,150 for general admission or $375 for an academic pass. Registration for Google I/O includes three full days of Sessions, Codelabs, Demos, App Reviews, Office Hours, admission to the After Dark reception, and attendance at the Keynotes. This year's three-day event next to the Googleplex headquarters is focussing on four themes: Platforms, Grow and Earn, Build on Mobile, and Beyond Mobile. Those that did

Android Pie now rolling out to unlocked Razer Phone 2 w/ Google’s Digital Wellbeing

Image
The Razer Phone 2 first debuted last October, shortly after Android Pie first started hitting devices such as Google's Pixel. That left the device a step behind, but now the update is officially kicking off its rollout to unlocked models. The best gifts for Android users True to its word, Razer kicked off the update on February 27th and at this point, it should be rolling out widely to all unlocked Razer Phone 2 owners. The update weighs in at roughly 1.4GB and includes the February security patch, support for 60fps video in 720p, 1080p, and 4K quality. Gestures navigation, improved notification management, and adaptive battery support. Notably, this update also adds the Razer Phone 2 to the limited list of devices which support Google's Digital Wellbeing. Granted, this is a device designed to make gaming a solid experience, but it's nice to see the "time-well-spent" feature added on. Unlocked models should see the update availabl

The Google Home app now supports changing the color of smart lights

Image
Available as part of the v2.9 update. Back in October, Google completely revamped its Home app with a fresh interface and new smart home controls that made it ten times more enjoyable to use than past versions. Unfortunately, it was missing one big feature — the ability to change the color of smart lights/bulbs. A new update to the Google Home app is rolling out now (version 2.9), and after all these months of waiting, our complaints are finally being addressed. After downloading the update and tapping on a multicolored light, you'll now see a new "Color" button below the on/off toggle. When you tap it, you can browse through a list of 42 different hues. It would have been nice for Google to integrate a custom color wheel, too, but this is certainly better than not having anything at all. Google Home v2.9 is rolling out to the Play Store now, so be sure to keep an eye out for it. Download: Google Home (free) #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Pro features 48MP rear camera, 4000mAh battery, up to 6GB of RAM

Image
After announcing the Redmi Note 7 last month , Xiaomi today introduced a souped up version. The Redmi Note 7 Pro is now official following a Xiaomi event in India. The big upgrade here over the Redmi Note 7 is the processor, with the Pro model packing an octa-core Snapdragon 675 processor compared to the standard Redmi Note 7's Snapdragon 660 chipset. Also included is up to 6GB of RAM, up to 128GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 4000mAh battery. One of the highlight features of the Redmi Note 7 Pro is its dual rear camera setup. It includes a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor with 1/2 inch large sensor size, f/1.79 aperture, and a 1.6um 4-in-1 Super Pixel feature that aims to help you get clear, detailed shots in low-light conditions. There's a 13MP selfie camera that

Energizer announces a phone with an absurd 18,000mAh battery

Image
Energizer announces a phone with an absurd 18,000mAh battery CNET Energizer showed off their next foray into the smartphone market at MWC 2019 , and it's hard to tell whether or not we should be taking it seriously. The most defining feature of the phone, which you can see above, is the incredibly massive size of it thanks to its internal 18,000mAh battery. Anyone that said they'd buy a phone that was significantly thicker for more battery life, you're obligated to pick this one up. Seriously though, this thing is laughably huge. They're calling it the Power Max P18K Pop, a successor to their previous (but also weird) P16K Pro. This device supports fast charging, so you should be able to totally juice up within about 8 hours. Really not bad for a phone that might be able to last an entire week on a single charge. The other specs of the phone are a little more unassuming, including a 6.2-inch display, MediaTek Helio P70 CPU with 6GB of RAM, 128GB of internal stora

AndroidPIT Awards: the big winners of MWC 2019!

Image
The 2019 edition of the Mobile World Congress is coming to an end. Once again, for us, the event was intense, but we managed (we hope!) to overcome the chaos to present to you the full extent of our expertise on a daily basis! Every year, this huge mobile show brings us its share of surprises, innovations and press conferences with beautiful presentations. After several days of intense walking (and running), we decided to list the best new products encountered during MWC 2019. We presented four awards at the event. Before revealing the winners (I'm keeping the suspense going), it should be noted that many things marked MWC 2019. Artificial Intelligence was already one of the big stars in 2018, and the 2019 edition of the tech fair has confirmed its rise. 5G was also one of the highlights of the Barcelona event, with a network that goes far beyond the ability to communicate better and faster. Finally, flexible displays were plentif
