A Huawei Update

Image
A week ago we heard about the impacts of the US trade ban affecting Huawei . Since then, there has been quite a bit of reporting on it, including excellent work by XDA Developers and Ars Technica's Ron Amadeo . Here are some quick thoughts on what has transpired: There is an argument going around that US developers cannot allow Huawei to distribute their apps . That is certainly true for any sort of bundled app distribution, as that would require a contract between Huawei and the developer, and US developers will be precluded from entering into such agreements. Similarly, US developers presumably are blocked from listing their apps directly in Huawei's own "AppGallery" channel. However, the story gets a lot murkier for app distribution channels – if the channel is outside the US (and therefore not under US jurisdiction), can a US developer post apps there, and can Huawei deliver apps from that channel? We may find out in the coming months, if Huawei and Aptoi

Galaxy Note 10 camera setup may look like this

Image
The rumor mill appears to be convinced that the Galaxy Note 10 camera setup will look similar to the iPhone, in that it will be positioned vertically . That's certainly going to be a new look for the Note lineup. The existing device, the Galaxy Note 9, has a prominently positioned horizontal camera setup at the back. A crude sketch making the rounds on Weibo suggests what the camera placement might be like on the Galaxy Note 10. It lines up with earlier reports about a vertical camera setup for Samsung's next flagship smartphone. Galaxy Note 10 camera setup could be offset to one side We have already reported exclusively that Samsung will offer two models of the Galaxy Note 10 . They are expected to feature 6.28-inch and 6.75-inch displays with triple and quad camera systems respectively. There will also be 5G variants of each model. This sketch probably represents the quad camera system which would include a Time-of-Flight camera like the Galaxy S10 5G in addition to

Exclusive: Galaxy Watch successor in the works, here are some details

Samsung is working on the successor to the Galaxy Watch according to information we've received from our sources. If you've been waiting to upgrade your existing smartwatch or looking to purchase your first smartwatch and didn't find the Galaxy Watch Active a very attractive option, your search may come to an end in the next few months. Samsung's next watch may have a 5G variant for the US The Galaxy Watch successor will have model numbers SM-R820 and SM-R830 for the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth-only variants and SM-R825 and SM-R835 for the LTE variants. Samsung has pulled the bug-filled latest Galaxy S10 software update

Image
We reported yesterday that the latest Galaxy S10 software update (XXU1ASE5) had quite a few bugs . Those of you who updated also shared your experiences in the comments section. It's safe to say that serious action was required on Samsung's part to address the matter. Samsung has taken action by pulling the update. It's no longer available for download and we'll now have to wait for another version. There's no saying how long it might take for Samsung to release it. Latest Galaxy S10 software update has been pulled Many Galaxy S10 owners had complained about bugs after they had updated the firmware. The most common issue involved third-party apps freezing for no apparent reason. We had experienced that on our Galaxy S10 units as well. Twitter and Nova Launcher were two of the apps most affected by this problem. We also had readers reach out to us and complain that even the phone itself was freezing at times. They then had to restart the phone which isn't

New Galaxy Fold release date unlikely to be in June

Image
There's more uncertainty about the new Galaxy Fold release date ever since it was delayed from April 26 . Samsung had to delay the release due to some issues with its foldable smartphone that needed sorting out. The company hasn't confirmed a new release date since then. Recent reports had suggested that the issues had been resolved and that Samsung would release the device in June. Samsung's mobile boss had himself said over two weeks ago that a new date will be announced soon . A new report from South Korea claims that we may not see the Galaxy Fold come out next month. New Galaxy Fold release date still remains a mystery The report mentions that Samsung did have an internal goal of releasing the Galaxy Fold in June. However, it seems that the company needs more time to be certain that the hardware changes it has made are up to the mark. It was previously said that Samsung would begin network tests of the Galaxy Fold by mid-May prior to a release in June. That may

Samsung’s new power controller chips support 100W fast-charging

Samsung has announced the launch of two new USB Type-C power delivery (PD) controllers. The new SE8A and MM101 PD controllers support up to 100W of power, the company said. Samsung's current super fast charging in the Galaxy S10 5G supports 25W of power. Samsung says its new PD controllers can be used for a variety of devices, including smartphones, tablets, laptops and monitors. It has already begun the mass production of SE8A. The MM101 is currently sampling with the company's clients. First PD controller to embed Secure Element SE8A is the first PD controller to combine a Secure Element (CC EAL5+ equivalent) with a power controller into a single chip. This allows for some extra measures of protection, such as security key storage, and compact encoding and decoding sensitive data within a device. The SE8A also supports USB Type-C Authentication, effectively preventing misuse of unapproved products. These measures will prevent hacking of the device during charging. Th

You can now take panoramas with the Galaxy S10’s ultra-wide camera

Image
Samsung's recent Galaxy S10 update enables the use of the ultra-wide camera for panorama shots. Out of the box , the Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10, and Galaxy S10+ only let users use the ultra-wide camera for regular photos and videos; the ultra-wide lens was also used for background blur in Live Focus (bokeh) photos, but that was it. With the May update , Samsung added the option to take Night mode shots with the ultra-wide camera , and it turns out you can now take panorama pictures with the ultra-wide camera as well. While an ultra-wide camera already lets you capture more of the world in a single shot, panoramas can be handy in some situations, and many users will likely find the option to use the ultra-wide camera in Panorama mode useful. The most obvious benefit here is that you can capture more vertical area, along with being able to capture more of your surroundings without moving the phone around as much as you would have to for panorama shots with the primary camera. Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e review: An unbeatable value proposition

Image
Tablets are not as popular as they once were. No wonder that shipments have been in a constant state of decline for quite some time now. It may not get any better if foldable smartphones are able to carve out a niche. While Samsung is truly working hard to make foldable smartphones a thing, it's not giving up on tablets just yet. The Galaxy Tab S4 that it launched last year was a genuinely good product. We appreciated that the company had gone back to a 16:10 widescreen format . It offered flagship level specs for $650. If you liked it but didn't purchase because of the high price tag, Samsung now has the perfect device to sell you: the Galaxy Tab S5e. It has arrived before the Galaxy Tab S4's successor, which would presumably be called the Galaxy Tab S5 . Should you wait for the next flagship Galaxy tablet or invest in a Galaxy Tab S5e today? That's what we are going to find out in our review. Galaxy Tab S5e review: Design Prepare to be blown away the f
