Galaxy Note 10 display cutout can now mimic a notification LED

Image
Since the Galaxy S10 didn't come with a notification LED , it was hardly surprising when the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10+ didn't either. However, there were a few third-party apps that allowed the area that lights up around the front camera cutout to essentially mimic that behavior. You'll notice that the ring around the cutout illuminates when you switch between the front and rear cameras. Many called on Samsung to open this up as an alternative. Samsung later did that through EdgeLighting+ for the Galaxy S10. EdgeLighting+ has now been updated so that the Galaxy Note 10 display cutout can mimic the notification LED. Use your Galaxy Note 10 display cutout as a notification LED For those who are unaware, EdgeLighting+ is a Good Lock module (here's a refresher on Good Lock ) which allows you to customize the color, animation effect, width and transparency of the edge lighting effect. Samsung updated it earlier this year to provide a new Eclipse effect whic

The update adds the 1 September 2019 Android security patches, but it also adds a number of stability fixes too. Other changes relate to the stability of Bluetooth when connecting to headsets, as well as power management enhancements. If you recently updated, please let us know what Xperia 1 improvements you have noted in the comments below. Other phones that recently received an update include the Xperia XA1 Plus to build number 48.1.A.2.122 with August 2019 security patches. Interestingly, neither the Xperia XA1 or XA1 Ultra received the same update. On the budget side, the Xperia L3 saw a new update recently, with the build number moving to 54.0.A.6.23, and also adding the August 2019 security patches. Xperia 1 updated to build

Galaxy Note 10 game streaming app is out in the US and South Korea

Image
Samsung's PlayGalaxy Link app just went live in the US and South Korea. PlayGalaxy Link was first unveiled along with the Galaxy Note 10 series and, as yet, the service is limited to Samsung's latest flagships. It's also in beta, for the time being, but availability will expand to more countries and other Galaxy smartphone models "soon." To be precise, the Windows 10 app can be downloaded and installed even if you reside outside of the US and South Korea, but you won't get much functionality out of it without the smartphone application installed on your device. In our test, we could get the PC app running but it wouldn't detect our games. Nevertheless, the app allows you to add your own game executable files manually. It's a welcomed feature to what seems to be a relatively plain app, but again, other features were likely missing on our end because of our limited testing environment. It's worth reminding that Samsung's PlayGalaxy Link

Samsung vice chairman visits R&D hub amid rising uncertainties

Image
In his first public appearance since the Supreme Court ruling last month, Samsung Electronics vice-chairman and heir apparent, Lee Jae-yong, visited Samsung Research, the company's R&D hub, in Seoul today. According to media reports, the purpose of the visit was to discuss the company's strategy on future technologies amid rising uncertainties. Lee reportedly discussed developments in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Augmented Reality (AR), robots, displays, and more with senior executives who accompanied him during the visit. "Today's Samsung was an impossible future in the past. We have to open up a new future with new technologies that don't exist today," he was quoted as saying. "We should keep doing what we have to do amid rising uncertainties. We have to prepare thoroughly and keep challenging." Samsung has been staring at an uncertain future with slowing smartphone demand and worsening chip sales. Both these businesses have added substant

Samsung will give you one discounted Galaxy Fold screen replacement

Image
A discounted Galaxy Fold screen replacement sounds about just the right kind of incentive for a device that got off to a rocky start. Samsung delayed the device's launch in April this year due to concerns about the display's durability . It has since made significant improvements to enhance the panel's durability but some might still be apprehensive. Customers who pick up Samsung's most expensive smartphone can rest assured that they won't have to pay full price for a screen replacement. Samsung's guarantee only covers the internal foldable display which makes perfect sense. It's the most expensive component on this smartphone. Get a discount on your first Galaxy Fold screen replacement We hear that in addition to the warranty that all Galaxy products come with, Samsung will commit to one screen replacement of the Infinity Flex Display at a discounted rate. All Galaxy Fold customers will be eligible for this within one year of the date that they purch

SideSync is officially shutting down, replaced by Samsung Flow

Image
Samsung is officially shutting down SideSync . Signs of this happening first emerged in October last year when SideSync was replaced with Samsung Flow on the Galaxy S9 series. Now the company is going to pull the plug on SideSync across the board, and users who will want to share their notifications and mirror their smartphone's screen to a computer will continue to do so using Samsung Flow instead. SideSync will cease to exist on the Galaxy Store and Google Play Store beginning October 15. Once this happens, Samsung smartphone users will no longer be able to find and download the app through these channels. Users who already have the app on their phones will still be able to utilize it, but the company recommends Samsung Flow as a better alternative for people who require the mirroring feature. As to why Samsung has decided to axe SideSync, well, the app's demise doesn't come as a surprise given its lack of support for the Galaxy S9 a year ago. This doesn't se

Samsung launches the Galaxy A50s and A30s in India

Image
As suggested in the recent teasers , Samsung has launched the Galaxy A50s and A30s in India today. Both these mid-range devices were unveiled by the company last month itself , but pricing and availability information was not revealed at the time of the announcement. India is one of the first markets to get these new models from Samsung. The Galaxy A50s is a slightly upgraded version of the existing A50, as evident from the spec sheet below. Samsung has bumped up the resolution of the primary cameras and added NFC-based Samsung Pay to differentiate the A50s. It also sports a "newer" Exynos 9611 SoC and comes with Night Mode and Super Steady camera features. Similarly, the Galaxy A30s is also a minor upgrade to the A30 with an in-display fingerprint reader, higher-resolution primary camera, and NFC-based Samsung Pay. Strangely, the A30s sports a lower-resolution display than the A30, making the former a downgrade for some customers. Both the Galaxy A50s and A30s come wit

Image

The Galaxy Fold was then delayed due to some issues but it has now risen like a phoenix from the ashes . Samsung is finally making the device available for purchase. It's out already in South Korea and will be released in countries across Europe on September 18 . The Galaxy Fold will also go on sale in the United States before the end of this month. The company has made significant changes to improve the device's durability . It is confident that they will address the issues that caused the delay. Do you feel confident enough in the product or do you still have any concerns? Vote below and let us know your thoughts in the comments section. Are you going to buy the Galaxy Fold? Poll Opt

Experimenting with same-provider DNS-over-HTTPS upgrade

Image
As part of  our long standing commitment to making the web safer to use , we will be conducting an experiment to validate our implementation of DNS-over-HTTPS (aka DoH) in Chrome 78. As the name implies, the idea is to bring the key security and privacy benefits of HTTPS to DNS, which is how your browser is able to determine which server is hosting a given website. For example, when connected on a public WiFi, DoH would prevent other WiFi users from seeing which websites you visit, as well as prevent potential spoofing or pharming attacks. This experiment will be done in collaboration with DNS providers who already support DoH, with the goal of improving our mutual users' security and privacy by upgrading them to the DoH version of their current DNS service. With our approach, the DNS service used will not change, only the protocol will. As a result, existing content controls of your current DNS provider, including any existing protections for children, will remain active. Mor

Microsoft is offering up to $650 in trade-in credit towards Galaxy Note 10 purchases

Image
Microsoft may not be a major retailer, but the software giant does have online and offline stores in many markets where it sells select products and services, even those that are not directly related to the Windows ecosystem. This includes the newly-launched Galaxy Note 10 as well, which comes preloaded with Microsoft's Android apps and services. Like most other retailers, Microsoft is also aggressively pushing the Galaxy Note 10 with attractive offers. The Redmond company is giving generous trade-in credits on older Galaxy devices when you buy a Galaxy Note 10/Note 10+ at one of its retail locations in the US or Canada. Select models from Apple, Google, LG, and OnePlus are also accepted. The trade-in values vary depending on the model and the location, but overall, they seem to be higher than what Samsung is offering on its website. The offer is valid till September 22. Though Microsoft is displaying trade-in values for Australia and the UK as well, the terms and conditions

Check out Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 10 ads promoting main features

Image
Samsung has launched a new series of short Galaxy Note 10 ads aiming to maintain some of the phone's main characteristics under the spotlight. Two of these ads are focused on battery life which, as you can gather from our reviews, is pretty good on both the Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ ; especially on the latter. The company also prepared a new ad for Knox . It's a compilation of popular short videos that have become viral at one point or another. They all share a common theme of a close call, near miss, or some type of event that could've ended in a disaster but didn't, thanks to someone or something that prevented it. It's a parallel to Knox and how your phone is being kept secure by Samsung's platform even if or when you might not be aware of it. There is one ad in particular that targets only the Galaxy Note 10+ model. This is where one of the key differences between the two Notes becomes more evident. The ad is titled " FinalFinalFinal Present

Galaxy M30s live photos pop up at TENAA, new Exynos SoC rumored

Image
The Galaxy M30s is inching its way towards the market, and as part of its pre-launch process, the device seems to have been approved by the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA. This allows us to take a closer look at the smartphone's exterior design, as TENAA applications are generally accompanied by live photos, and this one is no exception. Large camera housing to become a design trend? Judging by the live photos shared by TENAA, the Galaxy M30s will indeed feature an unusual rear-facing camera setup. Or rather, the camera housing where the three rear-facing sensors and LED flash reside is uncommonly large. Monster battery could benefit from faster charging The TENAA application for the Galaxy M30s doesn't contain any hardware details, unfortunately, but we do know that the device is expected to rock a monster 6,000mAh battery . On top of that, GSMArena cites Slashleaks in saying that the phone could benefit from 18W fast charging over USB. Likewise, the device wo
