You can now rent select Samsung smartphones in India

Image
The model of subsidizing smartphones through carrier contracts doesn't exist or work in many markets around the world, and that includes India as well. This makes it difficult for most customers in the subcontinent to buy flagship smartphones, resulting in lower sales for established brands like Samsung, Apple, and others. To overcome this challenge, Samsung already offers its products on easy monthly installments. It appears the company is now experimenting with a rental option as well with select devices on its Indian website displaying a 'Rent now" option. The Korean tech giant seems to have added this option towards the end of September this year in partnership with Rentmojo, an online rental start-up in which Samsung Ventures invested recently . The entire smartphone rental process is handled by Rentmojo and is currently available only Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Noida, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Pune cities. Even in these cities, Galaxy S10/S10+, Note 10/1

Samsung’s Q3 market share in Japan increased threefold year-on-year

Image
Samsung's smartphone market share in Japan was three times larger in Q3 2019 compared to a year ago, according to a recent report from domestic media outlet The Korea Herald citing Strategy Analytics . Samsung reportedly shipped 500,000 smartphones throughout the July-September period, or 100,000 fewer units compared to the previous quarter . The company's market share in Japan stood at 6.7 percent at the end of September. It's a considerable improvement compared to the 2.4 percent market share topped in Q3 2018, but it also isn't quite as high as the 9.8 percent share registered at the end of June of this year. Apple is still ahead, but Samsung beats all other rivals Apple maintains its top spot in Japan with a whopping 63 percent share of the market, up from 50.8 percent in the previous quarter. Given the huge gap between Apple and Samsung in Japan, the latter is threatened more by smaller domestic companies than it is by its biggest rival. Fortunately for Sam

First Galaxy Fold 2 support pages appear on Samsung’s website

Image
Sooner than expected, Samsung has started adding support pages to its own website for the Galaxy Fold 2 , or to be more precise, for the SM-F700F. First Galaxy Fold 2 support pages go live It is no secret Samsung is working on a folding phone with a clamshell design, not dissimilar to that of the recently launched Motorola Razr 2019. This device is codenamed Bloom  and will carry model number SM-F700F, as we confirmed a while back . And though the device is expected to launch shortly after the upcoming Galaxy S11 , it has already been spotted by  GalaxyClub on Samsung's own website. Samsung Africa has gone ahead and started publishing a number of support pages for the SM-F700F. We can confirm the SM-F700F will indeed be released in several African markets. The support pages do little else than mention the model number, so we are left without any new information about the device itself. However, the fact that a local Samsung branch has already started gearing up for the

Galaxy S10 and Note 10 purchases in India come with discounts on other Samsung products

Image
Samsung has made a habit of offering discounts on smartwatches, accessories, and other devices on purchase of its flagship Galaxy models. Though these promotional offers are a regular occurrence, the company keeps tweaking the discounts and the applicable products all through the year to attract new customers. Samsung India has come up with one such new promotion for its 2019 flagship smartphones. Under the new offer, the company is offering discounts up to 32% on a wide range of Samsung products to those who purchase a Galaxy S10 or a Note 10 model. The list of discounted products includes a wireless charger, Galaxy Tab S5e, AKG Y500 headset, Galaxy Watch Active, Galaxy Friends Cover, and Clear View Cover. Frankly, none of the discounts are attractive enough to trigger an impulse purchase, but if you were already planning to buy any of these devices, then the discounts may result in sizeable savings. The good thing about this new offer is that Samsung is giving these discounts

Recent update breaks fingerprint registration on Samsung Galaxy A50

Image
A recent update for the Galaxy A50 seems to break the fingerprint registration process on the device, despite improved fingerprint recognition being the purported benefit of the update. Galaxy A50 fingerprint registration problems after update Only a few days ago, an update was supposed to improve fingerprint recognition on the Galaxy A50. As usual, the changelog of the update advised the user to re-register fingerprint in order to benefit from the new software. However, since then, we've received many reports about the registration process being broken in firmware versions A505FNXXS3ASK9 and A505FDDS3ASK8. For many users, things work normally until the registration process reaches 41 percent completion, GalaxyClub reports. It either takes many attempts to finish the process, or the device breaks it off with a notification: 'Make sure the fingerprint sensor is clean and dry, then try again' . Other users report finishing the process, only to have their A50 reject t

Galaxy A51 launch may not be far off as support pages appear

Image
The official launch of Samsung's upcoming Galaxy A51 may come sooner than expected, as the first support pages for the device have appeared on the manufacturer's own website. Galaxy A51 might launch soon In recent weeks we have learned many details about Samsung's next mid-range king, the Galaxy A51. Earlier this week, a fresh  set of renders showed the phone in full, sporting a quad rear camera, tiny bezels, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Still, with the phone running Android 10 out of the box, we more or less expected it to debut after the Galaxy S11 , in February or March 2020. After all, that was Samsung's playbook earlier this year with the Galaxy A50 and the  Galaxy S10 . However, as  GalaxyClub   points out, Samsung Russia is already preparing for the A51's launch by publishing the device's first support pages . This would be right on time for a launch in, say, December, but unusually early for a launch in the spring of 2020. Of course, for years ne

New Android 10 beta update released for the Galaxy S10, download now!

Image
Samsung has released a new Android 10-based One UI 2.0 beta update for the Galaxy S10 series. This is the fourth Android 10 beta for Germany, South Korea, and the US, where the beta program was first launched, and the third beta for all other markets, such as India, Poland, France, Spain, and the UK. The update should soon be rolling out in all these countries over the air (it is already live in Germany), comes with software version G97**XXU3ZSK9, and fixes a slew of bugs. You can download it on your S10e/S10/S10+ by tapping the  Download and install  option in the  Software update  menu of the phone's Settings app. The list of bug fixes for the latest beta update is shorter than previous updates , suggesting that Samsung is much closer to having the stable Android 10 update ready. In fact, Samsung has closed the Android 10 beta program in South Korea , which is another indication that the stable release might be around the corner. However, since these are beta updates, nothi

Galaxy 10th Anniversary Package gets you three great Samsung devices

Image
Samsung has announced that it will launch a bundle of three of the best Galaxy devices it has launched this year called the Galaxy 10th Anniversary Premium Package to celebrate the holiday season and how the company has "broken new ground in design, engineering, and innovation" over the last decade. The Anniversary Premium Package includes a Galaxy Note 10+ , a Galaxy Watch Active 2 , and the Galaxy Buds , and it will also come with Samsung's official Note 10+ silicon case and a couple of straps for the Watch Active 2. Samsung hasn't revealed any pricing details, only saying that the Anniversary Premium Package will be available in select markets later this month. We're assuming the bundle will cost as much as it would cost for you to buy the Note 10+, Watch Active 2, and Galaxy Buds individually, and the silicon case and watch straps will be thrown in as freebies. That would not make the Anniversary Premium Package very special, but it would be a neat way for

Samsung Android 10 release nears as One UI 2.0 beta closed in Korea

Image
Exactly a month after launching the Galaxy S10 Android 10 One UI 2.0 beta program , Samsung has closed beta registrations in South Korea. It has only done that for the Galaxy S10, though, as beta registrations for the Galaxy Note 10 are still being accepted. South Korea was the first market where Samsung launched the One UI 2.0 beta and later expanded it to more markets. So it's entirely possible that we'll see beta registrations being closed in other markets as well in the coming days. Things are looking up for the official Samsung Android 10 release Samsung released the third beta firmware for the Galaxy S10 series just last week. It closed registrations for the beta at midnight on November 14. Galaxy S10 owners in South Korea will no longer be able to sign up for the beta program. Just because it has closed the One UI 2.0 beta doesn't mean that Samsung may not release additional beta firmware. It has likely filled up all the spots and doesn't feel the need t

How to force dark mode in all apps on Android 10 on a Galaxy S10/Note 10

Image
Samsung brought a system-wide dark mode interface to Galaxy devices with Android Pie and One UI, but it's only now that a dark mode has officially been introduced in Android 10 that developers are beginning to update their apps with a black/dark interface. On Android 10, if an app supports dark mode and the feature is enabled in the system setting, the app will switch to a dark UI by default (unless you select otherwise in the app's settings). However, Android 10 was released by Google just two months ago, and most manufacturers haven't yet released the update for their devices. That includes Samsung, which has been running an Android 10 beta program for the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 but will probably not release the stable update for a few weeks. And since Android 10 has only recently been introduced, it will be a while before all your favorite apps are updated with dark mode support. But did you know that you can force dark mode in all apps to Android 10, includi

Galaxy S9 gets new November update with improved camera

Image
The Galaxy S9 and S9+ were updated with the November 2019 security patch in the first week of this month , and Samsung has now issued a second update with the latest security patch for the Galaxy S9/S9+. It's unclear why the second update has been released. The November security patch was already available for the S9 and S9+, and while the changelog also mentions improved camera performance, there doesn't seem to be any actual improvement or new features included in the camera app. Samsung does tend to repeat older changelogs for software updates, and it's possible that is what the company has done this time around as well. However, the update should include some under the hood changes, as the build numbers — G960FXXU7CSK1 and G965FXXU7CSK1 for the S9 and S9+ respectively — tell us that this is not merely a security update (indicated by the letter 'U' after 'XX' in the build number; there would be an 'S' in place of 'U' if this had just

Sharing knowledge this Native American Heritage Month

Image
I am a proud tribal member of Doyon, one of the 12 Alaska Native regional corporations. Unlike the "lower 48" states, Alaskan Native tribes are organized as incorporated entities. My family has lived and fished in Alaska for generations; we have a fish camp on the Yukon River where we come together every summer to live off the land, with no running water, no electricity and no access except by boat. Growing up each summer on the Yukon has taught me the importance of knowledge sharing—passing traditions and customs from one generation to the next.  As a Googler, I've never lost sight of this, and continue sharing knowledge with those around me. This October, I partnered with my tribe to create a robotics workshop with the Google American Indian Network, an employee resource group made up of Googlers from across the company who are passionate about making an impact for indigenous communities. Software engineers from Google traveled all the way from California to Fai

Why Samsung should pursue a clamshell foldable phone in 2020

Image
The clamshell form factor is going to make a comeback in the wake of flexible display technology, and at SDC 2019 , Samsung hinted that it is at least considering this design language for a future foldable device, possibly even for next year. Motorola already unveiled its first device based on flexible display technology, and it's a clamshell phone proudly boasting the revived Razr brand. Whether the Motorola Razr will or won't be a good device remains to be seen, but I think the clamshell design is the perfect fit for this emerging display technology, and I think that Samsung should adopt it next year, even though I don't believe that the ongoing Galaxy Fold formula should be abandoned. The main advantages of the clamshell form factor Improved screen protection was one of the best things going for the original clamshell design prevalent in the feature phone landscape of the 2000s. Gorilla Glass didn't exist back then and it wasn't unheard of for a plastic s

How do you pronounce quokka? Practice with Search

Image
People around the world come to Search to ask questions related to language, like looking up the definition of a word or double checking the pronunciation of a word in another language. Just this morning I've already searched how to define "otorhinolaryngologist" and the translation of "naranja" in Spanish to English. Now, we're helping people pronounce tricky words and understand the meaning of those words. First, we're launching a new experimental pronunciation feature that lets you practice word pronunciations right in Search. For the visual learners out there, we're adding images to our English dictionary and translation features to help you better understand the meaning of a word. Pronunciation practice makes perfect Studies have shown that practicing how to say a word can be helpful for remembering it, especially when you're learning a new language. Previously, when you searched for things like "how to pronounce quokka
