Xiaomi Mi 8 on DxOMark: joining the big leagues

Xiaomi is fast. It is one busy phone maker, launching new devices left and right. Before the 8th Anniversary Mi flagship model, we were introduced to the Mi Mix 2 and the Redmi S2. The month of May ends with the Xiaomi Mi 8 which comes in different variants: the Anniversary Edition, Explorer Edition, and the SE model with your choice between 6GB or 8GB RAM and 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB storage capacities. The Mi 8 actually has many selling points: high RAM, large storage, dual-frequency GPS, and AI-powered camera. The Explorer version even boasts 3D face unlock and a pressure-sensitive in-display fingerprint technology.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 has reached DxOmark already. We're assuming the Chinese OEM has shared the phone with the DxOMark testers. It's not surprising since we've been hearing about the new Xiaomi Android phone the past few months. The premium flagship smartphone runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor so you know it can be really fast and powerful. Its features are similar to the Mi MIX 2S but with some advancements.

When it comes to imaging, the Xiaomi Mi 8 comes with a dual 12MP camera system–12MP wide-angle with 1/2.55-inch size sensor and f/1.8-aperture and another 12MP with f/2.4 aperture and telephoto. Xiaomi decided to add a 4-axis optical image stabilization (OIS), wide-angle module, LED flash, and phase detection autofocus.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 has received an overall score of 99 on DxOMark. That's impressive already even it's not on top of the rankings but it's tied with the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus— No. 4 and just behind the Huawei P20, HTC U12+, and the Huawei P20 Pro. It is ahead of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S which received a score of 97.

The Mobile Photo score is very high at 105 but Video score is only 88.

The Mi 8's cameras are capable of offering accurate exposure and wide dynamic range, rich and vivid colors, accurate white balance (neutral), very fast and accurate autofocus, plus smooth and attractive bokeh simulation. The phone offers low noise except in the lowest of light levels. There are some not-so-good camera behaviors including visible color fringing, slight inaccuracies in white balance, some loss of fine details in bright light, plus occasional autofocus delay and depth inaccuracies in bokeh mode.

When it comes to video recording, the Xiaomi Mi 8 delivers generally low levels of noise, vivid and pleasant-looking color, good focus tracking, super-fast and accurate autofocus, as well as, a wide dynamic range. It may not be obvious to most people but there may be inaccurate time stamp occasionally, visible differences in sharpness between frames, and light exposure and white balance inaccuracies. There are also some visible differences in sharpness between frames.

So this Xiaomi Mi 8 is better than the Mi Mix 2S. Well, the cameras aren't exactly a selling point but it's always good to know another flagship is upping its game in the smartphone camera arena. The Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus' camera is already very impressive so the Mi 8 with the same score is definitely a winner.

Apple is postponing new iOS features in favor of reliability and performance

Apple has decided to postpone new features in iOS in favor of improving the reliability and performance of the operating system, as according to a report by Axios. According to the report, Craig Federighi, Senior Vice President, Software Engineering, announced the revised plan to employees at a meeting earlier this month. This pushes features like refresh of the homescreen and in-car user interface, improvements to core apps like Mail and camera experience to 2019. What we will get this year is improvements to AR, digital health and parental controls. Apart from that, the OS will largely feature improvements to performance and user experience.
