Samsung, Huawei Aim To Reduce Damage With New Patent Settlement

Image
Huawei and Samsung have now agreed to settle a long-standing dispute over patent use, reportedly filing a joint report asking for a stay of judgment as details and terms of the settlement are finalized. Details of the settlement and the reason behind the filing have not been revealed but the current expectation is that the bulk of finalization will center around Huawei dropping an appeal filing against Samsung. Specifically, that would be a filing against a Samsung injunction seeking to nullify an earlier judgment that would have halted Samsung 4G LTE phone sales in China. The US courts had, at the time, instructed Huawei not to enforce the resulting ban. A settlement would bring an end to those types of discrepancies between rulings in the US and China, where the case and ensuing cases have continued to play out.  Saving face The settlement could go beyond saving money for both companies and further confusion by ending the expensive proceedings for both companies too. It may

Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 Fails The Ultimate Durability Test: Video

Image
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 has been put to harsh durability tests in a new video by popular YouTuber JerryRigEverything, and the mid-range budget device performed quite well up until the very last moment when its structural weak points have been revealed. The tests determined some of the building materials used by the Chinese OEM to manufacture the device and confirmed that the 6.3-inch IPS LCD display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. The shiny frame surrounding the device is made out of plastic despite its metallic look, and so is the dual-SIM card tray which can accommodate a microSD card in the second slot. Disappointingly, the rubber meant to seal the SIM card tray and protect it from outside elements came off by its own without being subjected to harsh treatment, so prospective buyers should be aware that this particular component might have a manufacturing defect. On the bright side, the material covering the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner didn't suffer any dam

Samsung: Galaxy Fold Just Prelude To Even More Ambitious Tech - MWC 2019

Image
Samsung Executive Vice President Eui-Suk Chung shared more details about the thought process that went behind the development of the Galaxy Fold while speaking at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. In a recent interview , the EVP reveals that Samsung views the Galaxy Fold as a direct response to how people interact with their phones today, which is "all the time and for all things" and offered a glimpse at how foldable technology could evolve even further in the future. The interview touched on future App Continuity support while an embedded cartoonish YouTube video provided a few examples of how the Galaxy Fold will change the way people will interact with mobile devices in this emerging foldable category. Samsung has prior experience with so-called "hybrid" mobile devices including the Galaxy Note series which greatly contributed to defining the "phablet" concept. The Galaxy Note itself was created because Samsung noticed a demand for larger scree

Gorgeous Nokia 10 PureView Concept Is Inspired By The Lumia 1020

Image
The Nokia 9 PureView was announced during this year's Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, so it's a brand new device, and yet the very first Nokia 10 PureView concept design has just surfaced online. This design comes from the Concept Creator YouTube channel, a channel that had released quite a few concept designs in the last year or so. Please do keep in mind that this is just a third-party concept design, not a leak of the device or anything of the sort. If HMD Global opts to release the Nokia 10 PureView, chances are it will not look like this, but it's still fun to check it out. This concept handset comes with a display camera hole, that hole is placed in the top-right corner of the phone, and the device is almost completely bezel-less, aside from that hole, of course. It has an almost non-existing bezel around the display, and its frame is also quite interesting, it's curved, and the whole design seems to be inspired by some Nokia Lumia devices. Inter

Swatch Files Lawsuit Against Samsung For Infringing Watch Faces

Image
Swatch Group has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York for unfair competition and unfair business practices, reveals a recent Reuters report detailed further by The Verge . In the complaint - which can be downloaded in PDF format via World Intellectual Property Review – Swatch Group alleges that Samsung Electronics infringed on its IP by offering watch faces based on original designs owned by the group's various brands including Jaquet Droz, Omega, Longines, Tissot, Mido, Hamilton, and Swatch. The unoriginal watch faces have been developed by third-party developers and not by the Korean OEM itself, however they have been sold through Samsung's Galaxy Store – rebranded as "Galaxy Apps" earlier this month – and Swatch Group claims that the OEM did not take the necessary steps to prevent this from happening, despite a prior notification sent to Samsung Electronics last December. Samsung Now Lets You Remap Bixby Button, Just Not to Google Assistant

Image
Good guy Samsung announced last week that it was going to allow owners of the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S9, Galaxy S8, Note 9, and Note 8 to remap the dedicated Bixby button without having to jump through work-around hoops. They were going to give you the ability to remap Bixby to another app within their new One UI. Today, an update to Bixby is rolling out that enables this change, but don't expect to be able to switch it over to Google Assistant . Once updated, you'll find the new options by going into Bixby settings, then scrolling until you find the "Bixby key" section ( here ). Within that section, there are options to single or double press to open Bixby, along with a customization for the opposite of whatever you choose. So if you choose "Double press to open Bixby," then you can set the single press to open an app. That make sense? Samsung will let you customize that extra layer to open almost any app on your phone, just not Google Assistant. You ca
