Despite major upgrades, Apple’s iPhone XS still doesn’t match the Pixel 2’s camera

Image
Since their debut, the stand-out feature of Google's Pixel smartphones has been the camera. Google has remained at the front of the race with its Pixel 2 line of devices, but recently Apple tried to challenge that with some major improvements on its new iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Now, the reviews are in and, Google is still ahead of the curve…The best gifts for Android users Where the iPhone XS tried to improveSo first of all, where did Apple actually try to improve its offering on the latest crop of iPhones? Both the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max offer similar camera hardware to the iPhone X that came before it, but with some big improvements beneath the surface. There's still a dual-camera set up with a 12MP telephoto sensor and a 12MP wide-angle sensor, but that wide-angle primary sensor is now much larger than the one on the iPhone X. Specifically, they're bigger by 1.4µm pixels and deeper by 3.5µm pixels. Apple also says there are twice as many focus pixels for bett…

Anker’s Google Assistant ‘Model Zero’ Speaker Passes Through The FCC

Image
In short: A new Anker speaker featuring Google Assistant has now shown up at the FCC, suggesting it is one step closer to becoming available to buy in the US. Besides the included ability to make use of Google Assistant and voice command features in general, Anker has focused on offering a premium design with this is speaker. Although, to many, it will simply look like a kettlebell. Background: Anker first announced the "Model Zero" during CES 2018 although at the time it was launched under the company's ZOLO brand as the ZOLO Model Zero. During the original announcement there was no firm mention on when the Model Zero would arrive to market, and while that is still the case the ZOLO website is currently listing the Model Zero as coming in the Fall of 2018. Which ties in nicely with the unit having now shown up at the FCC. However, the documents, images, and even the manual listed on the FCC show the Model Zero as arriving as a Soundcore-branded product. While Soundcore i…

Android 9 Pie-based Samsung Experience 10 leaks out; big UI changes revealed

Image
Samsung Galaxy S9+
Despite being the number one smartphone manufacturer, Samsung has historically been one of the slowest brands when it comes to software updates. But thanks to a new leak, it has been revealed that the company is already deep into the process of preparing its next update, Samsung Experience 10.
Before getting too excited, it's worth noting that the build in question, which is intended for the Galaxy S9+, is still an early development one based on Android 9 Pie, so there are unsurprisingly some bugs ...

[Deal Alert] 4K Fire TV on sale for $40 ($30 off) for Prime members

Image
...You can swing by Amazon's website any old day and purchase a Fire TV Stick for $40, but that's just the 1080p version. The 4K-compatible Fire usually costs $70. That's not the case today. Amazon Prime subscribers can get $30 off the 4K Fire TV right now.The 4K Fire TV is a bit larger than the 1080p Fire TV Stick, but it still just dangles behind your TV. It runs Fire OS, so you have access to Alexa and all the usual Amazon content. You're probably buying this one because you want to 4K video, though. You can watch UHD TV and movies through apps like Netflix as well as Amazon's own Prime library. At $40m the 4K Fire TV is the same price as the Fire TV Stick. Again, this discount is only available to Prime members and only for a limited time. How limited we do not know, but don't wait too long. There's no reason to get the Fire TV Stick if you're a Prime subscriber.

YouTube Gaming app is shutting down in March, moving to a web portal

Image
There's a new place to watch all of your favorite gaming YouTubers.Back in 2015, Google launched its YouTube Gaming app to give gamers their own platform for separate features like Game Pages, Super Chat, and Channel Memberships. Since then, many of those features made their way to YouTube as a whole, and it seems as though YouTube Gaming no longer needs its own standalone app.The YouTube Gaming app will be shutting down as of March 2019, but that doesn't mean the entire platform is going away. Instead, YouTube Gaming is moving to its own site starting today at youtube.com/gaming. Google says that while it has a strong audience on the YouTube Gaming app, it can reach an even larger audience directly on YouTube, with over 200 million gamers and 50 billion hours of gaming content in the last year.At the new YouTube Gaming webpage, you can search and sort by particular games to find related videos, ongoing live streams, and other games from the developer. You can also subscribe t…

Top 3 excuses companies make for ditching the headphone jack

Image
With the OnePlus 6T ditching the headphone jack, consumers are yet again robbed of the choice to listen through wired headphones. Yes, OnePlus includes a dongle with its new flagship, but companies like Apple force users buy one separate for wired listening. Surely, there must be a reason companies are punishing loyal consumers, right? We've been given plenty of reasons, but they're not valid.1: Ditching the headphone jack affords larger batteriesThe OnePlus 6 and Google Pixel XL both retained the headphone jack and house comparable batteries. This one makes sense. After all, if the headphone jack was taking up too much space, and nixing it meant a bigger battery, great. There are plenty of great truly wireless earbuds out now, so it's all good. It's a rational point, but it isn't true.Let's look at the HTC U11.As depicted by the chart below, the HTC U11 houses a 3,000mAh battery and lacks a headphone jack. However, its predecessor, the HTC 10 features a headphon…

Razer Phone 2 specs appear in the Google Play Console, evidence of a Chroma app

Image
The Razer Phone 2 has shown up in the Google Play Console. The handset is listed to be powered by a Snapdragon 835 CPU, and 8GB of RAM.The image of the Razer Phone 2 from the listing shows a Chroma app on the device's homescreen. Razer ignited new interest in smartphone gaming when it announced the Razer Phone. Now, a year later, the company plans to keep that momentum going by releasing a slightly updated handset. While we had a pretty good idea of what would be powering the device, the Razer Phone 2's specs have leaked out thanks to a listing on the Google Play Console (via XDA-Developers).As you can see from the screenshot below, the Razer Phone 2, codenamed "Aura," is shown to come running the Snapdragon 835 CPU, 8GB of RAM, and Android 8.1 Oreo. We're really hoping that the processor type is just a typo copied over from the original Razer Phone. There's no reason to expect Razer not to include the Snapdragon 845.The spec listing also shows that the handset…

Samsung is Bringing Major Changes to Galaxy S9 With Android Pie

Image
Galaxy S9 Android Pie gets a first look.Android Pie is still likely months away from a release to Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ owners, but an early preview build has given us a look at the major changes that are coming. Not only that, we're getting a first look at Samsung Experience 10, which will arrive alongside the latest in Android as it hits Samsung's phones. The folks at XDA were sent screenshots of Android Pie running on the Galaxy S9+. The series of shots they shared show huge tweaks to the UI and an adoption of a Pixel-esque theme, as well as an abundance of rounded corners. This is looking a lot like a Google UI, only Samsung might have gone a bit overboard.First up, we've included a shot of the home screen, notification shade, and app switcher. All are quite different. You've got a new theme for the navigation (thank you, Samsung!), a much-more rounded experience in the notification shade, and a new vertical UI to the app switcher. While I have often criticized S…

Chrome OS v69 stable introduces Linux app compatibility, finalized Material Design changes

Image
The long-awaited Linux support for Chromebooks has just hit the Stable channel. According to the Chrome Releases blog, the consumer-facing release channel is in the midst of being updated to v69, which includes Linux application support — at least, on supported devices. The update also includes other features, such as a refreshed UI for browsing the filesystem, expanded dictation support for text entry, red-tinted Night Light, and some tablet-centric tweaks (among other smaller changes).Chrome OS v69 also marks the final transition of Chrome OS to the so-called "Material Design 2.0" interface. Starting with v67, Chrome OS inherited a "touchable" layout. v68 expanded on that with intermediary Material interface elements, and v69 finishes things off with the rounded rectangular tabs — among other more minor tweaks like padding changes.Chrome browser on Chrome OS v68 (left) and v69 (right). The full changelog for v69 as it hits Stable channel is just below:New Features
