Here’s when the Galaxy S20 might go on sale

Image
In the last couple of weeks, there has been a crazy amount of leaks about Samsung's Galaxy S20 series. We have seen multiple reports and rumors talking about the spec sheet for the three Galaxy S20 models, and earlier today, we saw the first report hinting at the possible pricing for the upcoming flagship. Now, another report has arrived with details on the Galaxy S20's availability.Galaxy S20 release date reportedly set a month after UnpackedSources speaking to Frandroid say the Galaxy S20 lineup will hit retail stores in France on March 13. And considering France is an important market for Samsung, we can assume that the same date would apply for the release in other countries around the world. Some markets, like the US and South Korea, could see the devices shipping to customers a day or two before they go on sale globally, at least if we consider what happened with the Galaxy S10 series last year. The pre-order period for the Galaxy S20 will reportedly run from February 11 …

Galaxy S20 series to be priced about the same as or lower than the S10

Image
The Galaxy S20 series is exactly three weeks away from its official unveiling and the rumors keep on pouring. The latest unconfirmed bit of information arrives via Twitter and concerns the pricing of the 5G variants. The rumor claims that the Galaxy S20 5G, Galaxy S20+ 5G, and Galaxy S20 Ultra (which is 5G by default) will cost €900-1000, €1050-1100, and €1300, respectively. The source adds that the flagship's launch prices are not set in stone and could be a bit lower. Also, the LTE variants will reportedly cost around €100 less than the 5G models, but that's somewhat expected if we take the launch of the Galaxy Note 10+ as a basis. There was a €100 discrepancy between the Galaxy 10+ LTE and 5G models, while stateside, carriers offered the 5G variant at a $200 premium over the LTE model. We could see a similar story developing around the launch of the Galaxy S20 in the US and Europe.Galaxy S20 Ultra could be considerably cheaper than the ceramic Galaxy S10+These unconfirmed pr…

Galaxy A11 and Galaxy M11 reconfirmed to run Android 10 by the WFA

Image
Samsung's most budget-oriented smartphones of 2020 – the Galaxy A11 and Galaxy M11 – have one less formality to deal with before they can hit the shelves. They have both been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance today while carrying the model numbers SM-A115F and SM-M115F.A couple of months ago we brought you the news about Samsung's plans to ship the Galaxy A11 with Android 10 out of the box. The WFA approval documents now confirm this to be true for both the Galaxy A11 and the Galaxy M11.Samsung's most budget phones will run Android 10 on launch dayThe Wi-Fi Alliance papers don't reveal new hardware details, as usual, but Samsung fans already have a general idea of what to expect from these devices. After all, they will be the company's most affordable smartphones of the year, and specs will be appropriate for the segment. The Galaxy A11 was previously spotted in an online benchmark running the Snapdragon 625/626 chipset coupled with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in sto…

AppCache scope restricted

Image
The Application Cache (AppCache) specification has been deprecated since December 2016 and in Chrome starting in version 79. In Chrome 70, AppCache was removed from insecure contexts. We plan to remove AppCache in Chrome 82. Prior to AppCache's removal in Chrome 82, we're announcing a security fix that introduces the concept of a manifest scope.

Beginning in Chrome 80 in January, 2020, the scope of the AppCache manifest will be restricted to the path it is served from. Previously, a manifest served from any location within a site's origin could override everything within that origin. For example, a manifest served from www.example.com/foo/bar/ would previously allow overriding any URLs within www.example.com. Now it will only allow overriding URLs beginning with www.example.com/foo/bar/, the scope of the manifest.

Does this affect my website?
To see if this affects your website, go to chrome://appcache-internals/ and compare the path of the manifest to the paths under Fil…

Improving 40 million Chromebooks for education

Editor's note: This week, we're at BETT in London, where you can visit us at booth SE30. If you're #NotAtBett, follow along on Twitter and Facebook. On the Google for Education team, we think a lot about how to make sure the technology we're delivering and schools are using is sustainable. Devices shouldn't have to be constantly refreshed or replaced after just a couple of years in the classroom. They should be used year after year and consistent updates should continue to expand functionality. We launched Chromebooks 10 years ago to reimagine what personal computers could do- devices that champion speed, simplicity, and security. Thanks to feedback from administrators, we created the Chrome Education Upgrade, which allows IT admins working in schools to have more control over the hundreds of thousands of devices they manage. To make sure Chromebooks are packed with the latest and greatest and to build long term value into each device, we automatically send security …

Unleash student creativity with Chromebooks

Image
Editor's note: This week, we're at BETT in London, where you can visit us at booth SE30. If you're #NotAtBett, follow along on Twitter and Facebook. My favorite part about being on the education team here at Google is talking to teachers about how their classrooms are evolving and how Chromebooks give their students a voice in the world. For generations, "learning" meant memorizing and repeating other peoples' ideas. Today, with the help of classroom computers and creativity apps, schools are reinventing themselves as studios for students to create and share their own ideas. Where students used to be limited to reading and writing, they can now design, record, compose, code, prototype, and share their ideas using a range of digital media tools. Today, we're updating our collection of creativity apps for Chromebooks—tools for the next generation of authors, filmmakers, journalists, artists and boardroom visionaries to capture and broadcast their ideas to te…

Good Lock 2020 with Android 10 support will be released on February 3

Image
Good Lock is a powerful customization app for Samsung devices that was first released in 2016 with Android 6.0 support. Iterate your way to success with A/B testing

Image
Many app publishers attempt to maintain stability in their app by not making any changes, despite the constantly evolving mobile ads business.  This approach can be detrimental in the long run by causing you to miss out on growth opportunities. Continuously testing new approaches in your app is an essential part of an effective monetization strategy, so we'd like to go over a few examples of tests you can implement now to get you started. What are some things I can test? With AdMob, you can test any feature of your app that can be defined with a variable. Here are some experiments you can start with: Ads alongside in-app purchasesIf you currently monetize your app exclusively through in-app purchases (IAPs), testing ads alongside IAPs is a low risk approach that allows you to understand the impact of including another monetization model.  For example, game publisher Four Thirty Threeused to rely exclusively on in-app purchases (IAP) for their revenue.  They used smart segmentation to…

Galaxy M30s enjoys success in India, improves Samsung’s market share

Image
A few months ago, IDCreported that Samsung's smartphone shipments in India have slowed down in Q3 2019 despite the market showing strong signs of growth. The company was losing ground to OEMs from China, including Xiaomi, Vivo, and Realme. The good news is that Samsung has regained its momentum in the final quarter of 2019, according to a fresh IDC report cited by The Economic Times.Samsung increased its market share in India from 16.19% in September to 19.85% a month later. The company performed even better in November when its share topped 21.08% of the market. At the same time, rivals including Realme and Vivo have underperformed.Furthermore, Samsung was able to increase its online influence and nearly doubled its online share in just a couple of months. Samsung held 10.3% of the online market space in September 2019, but the figure reached 18.77% in November. The Galaxy M30s seems to be a smashing hitAccording to IDC, the Galaxy M30s has been very successful in India ever since…

New Galaxy Buds+ renders show the earbuds in black and white

Image
Samsung's February 11 Unpacked event is likely to have the Galaxy Buds+ making their first official appearance alongside the Galaxy S20 and Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung's second foldable phone. Multiple leaks have shown that the updated earbuds will have pretty much the same design as the original Galaxy Buds, and we also know they will be available in a new Sky Blue color, renders of which hit the internet a few weeks ago. Now, new renders have leaked online, this time showing both the earbuds and their charging case in black and white. There's nothing else of note in these renders, and we are also yet to see the Buds+ in pink. As we had exclusively revealed when we first discovered that the Buds+ are in development, the new wireless earbuds from Samsung will be available in four color options: black, white, blue, and pink. We are also seeing signs of a red variant, although that one will probably be limited to a few markets. In terms of upgrades over the Galaxy Buds, the Buds+ w…

New Samsung smartwatch codename hints at a classic design

Image
Just last week we learned Samsung is working on its next Galaxy Watch generation. Now, the codename of the upcoming smartwatch seems to hint at a classic, rather than sporty, design.Galaxy Watch 2 codename: NoblesseRecently, news broke that Samsung has started work on a new device in its Galaxy Watch lineup, carrying model number SM-R840. We expressed hope that this might turn out to be the true successor to the first Galaxy Watch. After all, 2019 did bring us two generations of the Galaxy Watch Active, but 2018's Galaxy Watch never saw a proper follow-up.Now, the guys at GalaxyClub have received information hinting at an interesting codename for the next watch: Noblesse. Though details remain scarce, the name itself seems to point to a classic design, rather than a sports watch. Similarly, the name suggest that Samsung may be targeting a somewhat pricier segment of the watch market, though codenames are often packed with ambition regardless of whether the final product matches th…

Galaxy Note 10 Lite official in India, pricing and availability revealed

Image
Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy Note 10 Lite in India. Pre-booking for the phone starts today itself from major retail stores, online stores, and Samsung's official website, while general sales will kick off from February 3. Pricing for the Note 10 Lite in India is higher than what the rumors had suggested: The 6GB+128GB configuration will set you back by Rs 38,999 and the 8GB+128GB version by Rs 40,999.Those are actually excellent prices for what is on offer with the Galaxy Note 10 Lite. It may have some old specs, like the Exynos 9810 SoC that powered the Galaxy Note 9 in 2018 and the Note 8's 12MP primary rear camera, but it also comes with quite a few modern features. There's the 6.7-inch Full HD+ Infinity-O display with a centered punch hole, a 4,500 mAh battery with support for 25W super fast charging, and Android 10 with One UI 2.0 out of the box.The triple rear camera setup includes a 12MP F2.2 ultra-wide camera and a 12MP 2x zoom lens, while the front-f…

Galaxy S8 and S8+ January security update rolling out

Image
The Galaxy S8 and S8+ may not be eligible for the Android 10 update, much to the annoyance of those who purchased either device, but Samsung is continuing to release regular security updates for 2017's flagship Galaxy S smartphone(s). This week, the company is rolling out the January 2020 security update to the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. The update has been released in a few European countries, including France, Poland, Hungary, and the Netherlands. The January update for the S8 and S8+ sports firmware version G950*XXS6DTA1 and, as you would expect, comes with only the latest security patch. The January patch brings fixes for a handful of critical vulnerabilities in Android OS, along with fixes for 17 vulnerabilities found to affect only Samsung's software, including one that could allow brute force attacks on the lock screen password and allow unauthorized access to a device. If you live in a country where the January update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ has been released, you shoul…

Support page for Samsung Galaxy S20+ LTE variant pops up

Image
Going by all the leaks and rumors in the last couple of weeks, it's pretty clear that the Galaxy S20 Ultra will have a leg up or two over the regular Galaxy S20 and the Galaxy S20+ as far as the spec sheet is concerned. The S20 Ultra could be the only one to feature a microSD slot, Samsung's new 108MP camera, and possibly even a 40MP front camera. And, well, the top-end Galaxy S20 model could also be the only one to come with 5G support as standard.A few months ago, we revealed that the Samsung is developing firmware for the LTE variants of the Galaxy S20 and S20+. That led to some of our readers wondering why LTE variants exist when the new Exynos and Snapdragon chips have 5G connectivity built-in. If you had been hopeful that Samsung would end up scrapping those LTE variants, then you will be disappointed. A support page for the Galaxy S20+'s LTE variant has popped up on Samsung's Latin America website, pretty much confirming that 5G connectivity is not going to be s…

Galaxy A51 headed to all major North American carriers

Image
Last year, Samsung released countless new mid-range Galaxy A smartphones, but only a few of them made their way to the US. The Galaxy A50 was among the first of the 2019 A series phones to be released stateside, although not all of the major carriers offered the device. That looks set to change this year. The carrier-locked US version of the Galaxy A51 has been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, and firmware development for the device suggests it will be sold by AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Sprint. This is the first time we are seeing evidence that the Galaxy A51 will make its way to North America, though it doesn't come as a surprise. Right now, it's unclear when the US launch will take place. As we exclusively revealed a couple of weeks ago, Samsung also has a 5G variant of the Galaxy A51 in the works. It is currently only in development for South Korea, however, and it remains to be seen if Samsung will also bring it to the US at some point. The Galaxy A51 is one of the bes…

Image
The latest Android security patch has now been released for the Galaxy Note 9. The January 2020 security patch comes bundled as part of the second update for the Galaxy Note 9 that's based on Android 10. It's rolling out only in Germany at this time, but it's likely to make its way to more markets in the next couple of days. The software version for the new update is N960FXXS4DTA1.As we have seen with other devices that have received an update after they made the jump to Android 10, the new Galaxy Note 9 update only brings the January security patch. The January patch, as Samsung detailed earlier in the month, fixes five critical vulnerabilities discovered in the Android operating system and also patches 17 vulnerabilities that only affect Samsung Galaxy smartphones. To download the new update over the air if you own a Galaxy Note 9 in Germany, open the phone's Settings app, tap Software update, then select Download and install. Galaxy Z Flip main camera rumored to clock in at 12MP, not 108MP

Image
This may not surprise you if you've kept a close eye on the more recent leaks and rumor surrounding Samsung's upcoming clamshell foldable device. But according to what could be called the Twitter leaker sphere, the Galaxy Z Flip is not going to be equipped with a 108MP camera as reported by Bloomberg a couple of months ago.Instead – and in a rather expected turn of events – recent rumors now claim that the Galaxy Z Flip will have a 12MP camera, which may or may not be identical to the Galaxy Note 10's.It's wise to remember that unofficial details are subject to change, so perhaps there is some truth to the earlier 108MP sensor claims. More realistically, the inclusion of a 12MP main shooter instead of a 108MP one shouldn't be a shock to anyone given the fact that the Galaxy Z Flip is supposed to lower the entry-level costs of flexible display technology. The upcoming device is said to make a few compromises in favor of a lower price tag, and with that in mind, it w…
