Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge stuck in Black Screen Of Death (BSOD) while installing an update and unable to charge (easy steps)

No matter how powerful and elegant your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge is, there is no guarantee that the firmware will always run as smoothly as it is now because we've actually received quite a lot of complaints from our readers who have suffered the issue called Black Screen of Death (BSoD). Most of the time the BSoD is caused by a software-related problem wherein some of the services stopped running properly and resulted the system to crash.

When the phone has this problem, it will become unresponsive that you couldn't make it to turn on or boot up; it won't respond no matter how many keys you press or how long you leave it connected to its charger. As the owner, you should know if the problem was caused by either physical or liquid damage because if it is, then there's no point in troubleshooting it on your own. I suggest that in such case you should immediately bring it to a technician. However, if it occurred without apparent reason, then continue reading as this post may help you one way or another.

Before we move on to our troubleshooting, if you are looking for a solution to a different problem in your S7 Edge, visit our troubleshooting page as we have already addressed some of the most common issues reported by our readers. Fixing Galaxy S7 Edge with Black Screen of Death

There is this one solution that we know works for most BSoD cases. It's a very simple procedure and it may be the only thing you need to do in order to fix this problem and make your device respond again.

First solution: Forced Reboot

Most of the time the Black Screen of Death is actually just a result of a system crash and while it may seem like a very complicated problem as the device won't respond, it's actually just pretty minor and easy to fix and this is what you need to do:

  • Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key simultaneously for 10 seconds or more.

This will simulate battery disconnect and may trigger the phone to boot up. If you're familiar with the battery pull procedure, this is its counterpart only that we're doing this to phones with non-removable batteries like your S7 Edge.

The forced reboot will refresh your phone's memory by closing and reloading apps running in the background, services and core functions. However, if it's not responding to it, try doing the same procedure a couple more times and if still no, then try this:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don't release it.
  2. Press and hold the Power key while holding down the Volume Down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.

It's basically the same as the first procedure only that we're making sure the Volume Down button is held down first before the Power key because doing otherwise won't give you similar result. If your phone is still not responding to this, try the next procedure.

Second solution: Charge and do the Forced Reboot

It's possible that the battery got completely drained and the phone hasn't been shut down properly which may have also led to a system crash. In that case, you already have to issues. This is what you can do to address this problem and rule out this possibility:

  1. Plug the charger to a working AC outlet and I mean the wired charger.
  2. Using the original cable, connect your Galaxy S7 Edge to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether it's showing the charging signs or not, leave the phone connected to its charger for at least ten minutes.
  4. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don't release it.
  5. Press and hold the Power key while holding down the Volume Down button.
  6. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.

You're basically doing the forced reboot procedure while the device is connected to its charger. Assuming the problem was caused by a drained battery and system crash, your S7 Edge should be booting up by now. If, by any chance, the phone is still not responding after this, then it's time to bring it to the shop so that a technician can take a look at it.

However, if the phone has been doing fine prior to an update and this problem started shortly after that, then it's a firmware issue. You may try booting it up in recovery mode and do the Factory Reset or bring it to the shop so that the tech can re-flash the firmware but you have to tell him that the issue started after an update.

If you decide to go with the reset, here's how you do it but bear in mind that all your files and data that are saved in your phone's internal storage will be deleted:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight 'wipe data / factory reset.'
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option 'Yes — delete all user data' using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight 'Reboot system now' and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
