Huawei P20 Pro Can Now Shoot 960fps Slow-Motion Videos

Huawei's P20 Pro can now record super slow-motion videos at 960 frames per second, courtesy of a new software update which the Chinese original equipment manufacturer started rolling out on a global level earlier this month. The addition comes in the form of an over-the-air package that also tweaks some other aspects of the device and is expected to be fully deployed in the coming days. The firmware version CLT-L29C432B131 also ships with the June 2018 Android Security Update, as well as performance optimizations meant to make the P20 Pro more frugal and improve its battery life across a wide variety of scenarios.

A number of bug fixes and stability tweaks are also mentioned by the official changelog accompanying the OTA package, as are wallpaper display optimizations, though the company has yet to elaborate on the latter. The same update also fixes a well-documented "OK Google" bug which would consistently delay the other party's voice on any call accepted using Google's hands-free control mechanism. The new slow-motion mode is mostly identical to the 960fps capabilities of Samsung's Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus; it's highly automated and only starts shooting clips at such a high frame rate when it detects movement in a predetermined area of the viewfinder. While that limits its versatility, the default Camera app of the Huawei P20 Pro at least supports multiple slow-motion sections within a single uninterrupted clip, much like the Galaxy S9 lineup does.

The app's zoom button has now also been repositioned and is closer to the bottom of the interface where it should be easier to reach, especially since its hitbox is now larger given how its icon changed from a circle to a traditional square. The triple-camera setup of the Huawei P20 Pro is presently rated as the best mobile photography tool ever created by French image benchmarking company DxOMark, one of the leading authorities in the field. More OEMs are expected to embrace three-lens smartphone cameras moving forward, with both the LG V40 and Samsung Galaxy S10 series presently being rumored to feature such solutions.
