Samsung could source LCD display panels from LG

After Samsung Display announced its plans to stop the production of LCD panels completely, it was being reported that Sharp will carry on the duty to supply LCD panels to Samsung Electronics. However, Sharp alone can't provide enough panels to fulfill Samsung's needs. Now, it is being reported that Samsung is planning to source LCD displays from LG Display.

According to a new report coming out of South Korea, Samsung Electronics is in talks with LG Display for the purchase of LCD panels for its affordable TVs. A deal may be signed in the near future, and LG's supply volume could be worth anywhere between KRW 1 trillion (around $832.91 million) and KRW 1 trillion (around $1.66 billion).

Earlier, it was being predicted by industry insiders that Samsung could source LCD panels from Chinese firms, China Star Optoelectronics and BOE, and from Taiwanese firm Sharp (now owned by Foxconn). However, it looks like Samsung prefers its rival LG over other firms. LG Display plans to supply large-sized LCD Panels to Samsung from its plant in Guangzhou, China.

This isn't the first time LG is coming to Samsung's rescue, though. The South Korean firm had supplied 65-inch and 75-inch LCD panels to Samsung in 2017 after Sharp had abruptly stopped supplying display panels for Samsung TVs. LG and Samsung are fierce rivals in the TV space, with the former claiming its OLED TV technology to be superior, while the latter claiming the same about its QLED TVs.

Samsung spent a lot of money to tell New York that the Galaxy S8 has arrived

It goes without saying that Samsung is going to spend a lot of money on marketing to get the word out that its new flagship smartphone is the one you should be buying this year. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ at an event in New York City today. Since it was an invite-only event, although it was streamed live online, Samsung decided to spend a lot of money to tell New Yorkers that the Galaxy S8 has arrived. Samsung illuminated the iconic Times Square in New York City with immersive displays reflective of the visual experience that the Galaxy S8′s Infinity Display promises. It basically bought out almost every available signage to announce the arrival of its newest flagship smartphone. Foldable tablets are coming: Lenovo to launch one with an LG-made display

You might already be tired of reading rumors about foldable smartphones being imminent - after all, they've been in the news for years without one single such device actually shipping yet (or being announced). Well then, how about foldable tablets? Apparently those are going to exist too, at some point in the future. And the first one might be a Lenovo tablet, with an LG-made foldable screen. That is, if a new report from South Korea is to be believed. The Lenovo foldable tablet will have a 13" display when it's opened, and 8" to 9" when folded. It should be sold in China, at least at first. LG Display sees more opportunities in the foldable tablet market than in foldable smartphones, allegedly. That is because with a phone the screen is hidden when folded. But that downside turns into an advantage with tablets - they would be less bulky and easier to carry when folded.
