ARCore hits Developer Preview 2 with version 1.0 launching in coming months

Image
ARCore made a significant public debut with AR Stickers rolling out to the Pixel and Pixel 2 earlier this week. However, Google’s platform for Android-based augmented reality is still a developer preview for several more months, with the latest version rolling out today . Nintendo Switch Announced in August, ARCore brings augmented reality to existing Android devices without the need of special hardware . However, it does build on Tango’s fundamental technology and is focussed on motion tracking, environmental understanding, and light estimation. Developer Preview 2 today adds several technical and functional improvements to the SDK: A new C API for use with the Android NDK that complements our existing Java, Unity, and Unreal SDKs; Functionality that lets AR apps pause and resume AR sessions, for example to let a user return to an AR app after taking a phone call; Improved accuracy and runtime efficiency across our anchor, plane finding, and point cloud APIs. Google Allo 25 preps quoted message replies & camera effects as voice transcripts rollout [APK Teardown]

Image
In a teardown last month, we spotted Allo preparing a transcription feature for voice messages. With version 25 rolling out now, that functionality is beginning to go live for users, while Google continues work on camera effects and a Reply feature that quotes previously sent messages. Nintendo Switch About APK Teardowns : In this ‘APK teardown,’ we’ve decompiled the latest version of an application that was uploaded to the Play Store. When an app (or an APK, to be specific, in the case of Android apps) is decompiled, we’re able to see various lines of code within that hint at possible future features. Keep in mind that Google may or may not ever ship these features, and our interpretation of what they are may be imperfect. With that in mind, read on. Voice message transcriptions rolling out With version 25, users are beginning to see the new transcription feature for audio messages go live. Under Chat settings, there is a new “Voice message transcripts” option that ha

ARCore Developer Preview 2

Image
Augmented reality is a powerful way to bring the physical and digital worlds together. AR places digital objects and useful information into the real world around us, which creates a huge opportunity to make our phones more intuitive, more helpful and a whole lot more fun. We’ve been working on augmented reality since 2014, with our earliest investments in Project Tango. We’ve taken everything we learned from that to build ARCore, which launched in preview earlier this year. Whereas Tango required special hardware, ARCore is a fast, performant, Android-scale SDK that enables high-quality augmented reality across millions of qualified mobile devices. Developers can experiment with ARCore now, and we’ve seen some amazing creations from the community . ARCore also powers AR Stickers on the Pixel camera , which launched earlier this week and lets you add interactive AR characters and playful emojis directly into photos and videos to bring your favorite stories to life. Today, we’re re

YouTube VR has officially arrived for Steam, but it apparently has some early problems

Image
YouTube is one of the best places to find content, and that includes virtual reality media. 360-degree content is all over Google’s platform, and now, those with VR headsets connected to PCs will be able to access that properly. The best gifts for Android users This week, Google officially opened up early access to an official YouTube VR app for Steam. The app works exclusively with HTC’s Vive headset, or at least it would if it actually worked properly. Reviews of the app on Steam so far are mostly negative with many users not even being able to open the app. Of course, this app is in early access, meaning bugs are still going to be around for a while, but needless to say, it’s a bit annoying that there are problems for what should be a simple app. Google is no stranger to good VR apps , though, so the company will likely sort out these problems in the coming weeks with updates. If you want to try the app out for yourself, it’s free and available on Steam right now .

Google is testing Pixel Launcher update for some which adds ugly text to the search bar

Image
Google constantly changes up minor UI aspects of its various products, and often those changes aren’t received well by users. Currently, it appears that Google is testing a new change to the Pixel Launcher which adds text to the search bar, and it’s…bad. The best gifts for Android users First spotted by a few  Android Police readers, this new change tosses a bit of text to the search bar which appears at the bottom of the screen on the Pixel Launcher . This text varies from user to user, but the general idea is to prompt searches on the web and apps on your phone. Samples that have surfaced so far include just a simple “Search…” text where others say something along the lines of “Search apps and web…” As far as we can tell this is simply an A/B test, as there’s no reason why a specific text pops up or who gets it. Personally, I’m not a big fan of this change at all as it feels like unnecessary clutter. Adding text like this just takes away from Google’s clean design, a

Alphabet’s X deploying ‘fiber optic cable without the cable’ tech from Project Loon in India

Image
Google’s innovations lab, Alphabet X, is switching to a new approach to bring the Internet to people in developing countries. Instead of floating Wi-Fi hotspots in balloons , it is now using laser beam links which it has described as ‘just like fibre optic cable, but without the cable’ … Reuters reports that one of India’s states has agreed to buy 2,000 of the boxes which can be installed on roofs and posts as far as 12 miles apart. Alphabet Inc’s X research division said on Thursday that India’s Andhra Pradesh state government would buy its newly developed technology that has the potential to provide high-speed wireless internet to millions of people without laying cable. The approach is known as free space optical technology, which has proven difficult to implement in the past, but Alphabet seems confident it has solved the problems. Free space optical technology transmits data through light beams at up to 20 gigabits per second between the rooftop boxes […] But the tech

Fostering a love for reading among Indonesian kids

Image
Siti Arofa teaches a first grade class at SD Negeri Sidorukan in Gresik, East Java. Many of her students start the school year without foundational reading skills or even an awareness of how fun books can be. But she noticed that whenever she read out loud using different expressions and voices, the kids would sit up and their faces would light up with excitement. One 6-year-old student, Keyla, loves repeating the stories with a full imitation of Siti’s expressions. Developing this love for stories and storytelling has helped Keyla and her classmates improve their reading and speaking skills. She’s just one child. Imagine the impact that the availability of books and skilled teachers can have on generations of schoolchildren. In Indonesia today, it's estimated that for every 100 children who enter school, only 25 exit meeting minimum international standards of literacy and numeracy. This poses a range of challenges for a relatively young country, where nearly one-third of the

G Suite’s latest protections can disable work apps on insecure Android devices

Image
Besides offering a host of cloud applications, one of G Suite’s key features is the ability to manage a fleet of employee devices. Today, the service is adding new protections to ensure enterprise data isn’t compromised on insecure Android and iOS devices . Nintendo Switch Administrators can set security policies, like strong passwords, on devices that are signed into work accounts and have access to corporate data. On Android, phones and tablets that don’t adhere to an organization policies will be locked out of non-critical applications. With that in mind, the Device Policy app will now disable access to non-critical apps* on any work profile or company-owned Android device that it determines is non-compliant. Users will see a notification informing them that their device violated a security policy and some apps may be disabled. Those apps will be re-enabled when their device complies with all of the organization’s security policies. This disabling of apps like Gma

Protecting corporate data on non-compliant managed Android devices

Image
The Google Apps Device Policy app enforces your organization’s security policies on employees’ managed Android devices, protecting them and making them safer. If a security policy is violated, it’s especially important to ensure that corporate data isn’t accessible on that device until it’s once again compliant. *Non-critical apps are any apps that aren’t required for a device to function. For example, Dialer is a critical app, but Gmail is a non-critical app. Launch Details Release track: Launching to both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release Editions: Available to all G Su

Protect corporate data on compromised iOS devices

Image
Google Mobile Management allows G Suite admins to control access to company data on managed devices directly from the Admin console. With this launch, we’re giving admins increased power to protect their organizations’ data by preventing their users from syncing corporate data on jailbroken iOS devices . Admins can enable this feature in the Admin console under Device Management > Advanced Settings > Security . Note that this feature is off by default and requires an organization to have Advanced Mobile Management for iOS enabled in order to turn on. For this setting to work, users need to have the Google Device Policy app installed. Once the feature is turned on, users who don’t have the Device Policy app on their device will be prompted to install it. Once installed, the app will check if the device is jailbroken regularly, and notify the user if they pass or fail that check. This setting should help G Suite admins and end users keep their organization’s data secu
