Samsung Pay now available on the Gear S3 in the UK

Image
Samsung has extended its mobile payment platform to smartwatches in the United Kingdom. Starting today, customers can use Samsung Pay on their Gear S3 to pay for goods in brick-and-mortar stores, but seeing as the platform doesn’t support MST in the region, it’ll only work with NFC terminals. At present, Samsung Pay is still missing support for a number of leading financial institutions in the United Kingdom, including Barclays and Lloyds. However, it recently introduced compatibility for HSBC, an international bank used by millions of people in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Related:  Samsung Pay gets support for HSBC and M&S Bank cards in the United Kingdom Earlier this week, Samsung teamed up with PayPal to give customers the facility to use their digital balance as a checkout method. Unfortunately, the feature is currently restricted to the United States, but it should make its way to more regions — including the United Kingdom — in the near future. Via

Samsung removes sexist descriptor tags for Bixby

Image
After keeping us waiting for months, Samsung finally released Bixby for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ in the United States . It was previously reported that Samsung had to delay Bixby’s release because it was facing troubles getting it working properly with the English language. It appears that the issues have now been resolved and Samsung is confident that Bixby is ready for the public. That’s well and good, but while many were happy yesterday that Samsung has finally released Bixby, some weren’t too thrilled about the descriptor tags that the company used to differentiate the male and female versions of Bixby. Samsung described the female voice in Bixby’s “language and speaking style” menu as “#chipper, #clear, #cheerful” while the male voice was described as “#assertive, #confident, #clear.” Users were asked to pick a gender for Bixby which would then serve as the default voice for the assistant. Many were quick to point out that the descriptor tags that Samsung was using we

Here’s a full list of Bixby Voice commands for the Galaxy S8 and S8+

Samsung started rolling out Bixby Voice in the US yesterday , and owners of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ can now use all the capabilities of the AI-powered digital assistant on their smartphones. Bixby is pretty new to the game, and it competes with pretty mature AI assistants like Alexa, Google Assistant and Siri. However, Bixby takes an entirely different approach. It ties in deeply with stock and some third-party apps, and can perform complex and multi-step tasks, something that its competitors can’t. Here’s a list of voice commands that Bixby Voice can relate to: Common Commands Open Facebook What time is it? What’s the date today? Turn the volume up/down Restart off my phone Flashlight on/off Turn on Emergency mode Play music Stop the music What song is this? What’s the name of this song? Remind me to buy milk tomorrow at 9 am Show me my most recent reminder Delete the shopping reminder What’s the weather like? How is the weather going to be tomorrow? Will it

T-Mobile releases July security patch for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+

Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ owners in the United States were happy to find out yesterday that Samsung had finally released Bixby in its true shape and form . Those who own the handset on T-Mobile also received a firmware update yesterday which brings the July security patch for the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+. The July security patch brings fixes for 65 Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) discovered in the Android operating system as well as 16 exploits found in Samsung’s own software. Not a lot of detail was provided about the patches that were applied. The idea behind privately disclosing them is to make sure that the exploits are not used by malicious elements during the time that it takes for the patch to make its way to the devices. Firmware version G950USQU1AQGA and G955USQU1AQGA has now been rolled out by T-Mobile for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ respectively. The update weighs in at around 130MB and primarily features the July security patch. The usual slew of perfo

[Poll] Why I’m happy Samsung ditched physical navigation keys on the Galaxy S8

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months, I’m sure you’re aware that Samsung opted for a set of on-screen navigation keys for the Galaxy S8 — and I’m especially pleased with its decision, because I was never really a fan of the physical Home button arrangement on its former flagships. As I’ve said in the past, the Galaxy S6 edge+ is my favorite smartphone Samsung’s released to date, so much so that I decided against picking up the Galaxy S7 to continue using it. One thing I noticed after owning the handset for a year, however, was that the Home button had become loose. After inspecting a couple of Galaxy-branded devices I’d previously used as my daily driver, including the Galaxy Note II and Galaxy S5 , I came to the conclusion that it wasn’t only a problem with my particular unit; physical keys losing their tightness is actually a common fault with Samsung’s smartphones. You may think that I’m being petty, because let’s face it, most buttons have som

There’s no Skype app for Tizen yet, but there’s a workaround if you want to use the IM service

Skype hasn’t released its official app for Tizen yet, but if you own a Samsung Z4 , there’s a workaround if you want use the IM service. The folks over at TizenExperts have discovered that you can use Skype on Tizen 3.0 -based Samsung Z4 via its stock web browser. The stock web browser on the Samsung Z4 supports a protocol called WebRTC (Real Time Communication), which makes it compatible with a lot of IM services, including Skype, Telegram, and WhatsApp. All you need to do is, open web.skype.com on the phone’s stock web browser and log in to your account. You can send and receive chats as well as audio and video calls. You can also access real-time notifications through the notifications panel if you keep the web browser tab always active. You should not expect the same video or audio quality that you get on Skype’s official app on iOS or Android, though. WebRTC has a long way to go before it catches up with native apps. If you own the Samsung Z1 , Z2 , or Z3 , you’ll have to wa

Galaxy S5 Neo to receive Android 7.0 Nougat update

Image
In a strange turn of events, the Galaxy S5 Neo has been spotted at the Wi-Fi Alliance running Android 7.0, seemingly confirming rumors claiming that Samsung will distribute the long-awaited Nougat update for the handset, which is now approaching the end of its two-year support window. Android 7.0 Nougat brings a plethora of new features to the table, including enhanced notifications, improved application permissions, new emoji and refined battery saving tools, as well as an abundance of much-needed bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations. Related:   Galaxy S5 Neo Nougat update possibly being tested We’re a little surprised that the Galaxy S5 Neo is being treated to Nougat . Usually, Samsung forgets about spin-off variants shortly after they hit the shelves. But my colleague Asif humorously speculated a plausible reason for rollout: the firm’s taken on too many interns and is looking for ways to keep them busy. In case you missed its announcement, the Galaxy S5 Ne

Samsung iterates its strategy to recycle Galaxy Note 7 in an eco-friendly way

Samsung iterates its strategy to recycle Galaxy Note 7 in an eco-friendly way July 19, 2017 By anish Leave a Comment When a company sells and then recalls a product that has clocked over 3 million units in sales, it becomes an important task to recycle it properly. Samsung has now laid down the plans on how to dispose of the Galaxy Note 7 and its materials in a responsible manner. For the unopened Galaxy Note 7 and unused parts, Samsung has started selling the Galaxy Note FE in South Korea. However, for the recalled phones, the company will start recycling parts or possibly reuse them. For instance, components like OLED display, RAM, SoC and camera module will be separated and be used as service parts for the compatible phones that come in for repairs or sell them. Moreover, Samsung will also recover up to 157 tonnes of important rare metals like gold, silver, cobalt, and copper by extracting them from various parts. The Galaxy Note 7 recall last year cost Samsung a whopping

Samsung may not launch its Bixby smart speaker this year

Samsung may not launch a Bixby smart speaker anytime soon, despite reports claiming that it’s preparing to launch one by the end of August, because it believes that “the global market is dominated by Amazon and the Korean market is too small to make profits.” As it stands, the Amazon Echo holds an astonishing 70 percent share in the global AI speaker market, which is continuing to rise on a daily basis, with the Google Home coming in second place. Could Samsung win over all of those customers? Probably not. The only region where it’ll be able to influence customers to switch is South Korea, where SK Telecom’s NUGU is currently the leading AI speaker. But with only 100,000 units in the wild, Samsung is right to assume that the market is too small to make any profit. América Móvil partners with Samsung to deliver 4.5G networks in Latin America

América Móvil, the fourth largest telecom carrier in the world, has partnered with Samsung to deliver 4.5G cellular networks in Mexico and other Latin American markets. The partnership also focuses on improving the connectivity for IoT (Internet of Things) devices. The companies will test the 4.5G network using the Galaxy S7 edge, Galaxy S8, and the Galaxy S8+. Samsung and América Móvil will first test the new networks in Mexico and Puerto Rico.
