Google Maps is adding a Where’s Waldo? mini-game for the next week

Image
Starting today and continuing on for the next week, Google is bringing Where's Waldo? to Google Maps. On Android, iOS, and the desktop, you'll see Waldo pop up in his signature red and white stripes and give you a friendly wave. From there, just tap or click on him and you'll see the option to play a game that's straight out of the classic children's puzzle books. This is one of Google's annual April Fools' Day jokes, but the Maps integration is actually happening. Aside from Waldo himself, you'll also be on the lookout for his friends Wenda, Woof, Wizard Whitebeard, and also the villainous Odlaw. (If you're like me, those faces probably won't be quite as familiar to you when you start playing.) Once you find Waldo, you'll be "transported to places all around the world" to start the search again. There's even a Google Assistant component to this cam

Why does the U.S. government mistrust Huawei and not ZTE or Lenovo?

Image
Some companies make phones but some companies make the parts used to make them, too. Huawei's big plans to make a breakthrough into the U.S. smartphone market have been crushed. There's no gentle way to say that, so I'll just say it. As CES 2018 was drawing to a close, AT&T and Verizon, which were both all but confirmed to be "official" carriers of the Mate 10 Pro, both announced that they wouldn't be selling any Huawei phones after pressure from the U.S. government because Huawei phones being used in the states would pose a security risk. The government really doesn't want us using Huawei products. This pressure became official soon after as a bill was sent to Congress that would ban any government business from being done on a network that used Huawei (or ZTE) networking equipment. In the same week, we learned that government officials were urging AT&T to stop doing business with Huawei altogether and to stop working on a

Google's Emoji Scavenger Hunt is a browser-based game that tries to make machine learning fun and accessible

Image
"Machine learning" and "neural network" are familiar terms to anyone who follows what Google is up to these days, but they may not be the most accessible or comprehensible concepts for the masses. And that's fine — you don't need to have a firm grasp of machine learning to enjoy better photos or keyboards , for instance. Still, Google has been quietly showcasing ways for users to get more  hands-on with these concepts , and the latest such experiment is a game called  Emoji Scavenger Hunt . Here's how it works: Once you open the game in your mobile browser and tap "Let's Play," you'll be prompted to grant access to your phone's camera (privacy-minded browsers like Brave or Firefox Focus won't cooperate). Once you allow camera access, you'll see a countdown and hear some cartoonish noises (turn up your volume if you don't), then you'll be shown an emoji that you have to find in the real world around you

Google Home and Home Mini are coming to India in April

Image
Google is gearing up to officially launch its Home and Home Mini devices in India next month. The news was originally picked up as part of a communication by Redington India with its retail partners. This move has been widely anticipated, since the Google Assistant rolled out support for Hindi last month . Plus, Amazon's competing Alexa and its Echo Plus, Echo and Echo Dot devices have recently begun selling in the subcontinent as well. Officially expanding the ongoing, cut-throat voice assistant battle to a vast new battleground. Alexa has the benefit of a substantial library of local skills at launch, but it still can't understand or speak Hindi. This might just be Google's secret weapon in the fight. As per reports by local users of imported Google Home devices, the process of localization for the Home smart services is already under way and a lot of it has to do with language recognition. Apparently, right around the time Home devices located in India received

How to: Automatically mark archived emails as read in Gmail or Inbox

Image
One of the things that most annoyed me when switching from Gmail to Inbox as my main email client was how you could no longer mark emails as read. My email workflow had always consisted of manually marking emails as read before archiving them, and I didn't appreciate the change. It might just be my unhealthy obsession with being unreasonably neat and organized — it probably is — but it really irks me to think that there might be an unread email hiding somewhere in my archive. In an ideal scenario, email notifications from the Gmail and Inbox apps would have something like an "Archive and Mark as Read" button for those cases when you know right away that you can archive an email without having to read it. A decent alternative is what we already have in Gmail, where you can select a bunch of emails and, in two taps, mark them as read and archive them. However, this still requires opening the app every time, and if you use Inbox like I do, you don't even have t

Skagen Falster smartwatch review: Minimalist design, minimal features

Image
Maximum nostalgia. It took far less time for the smartwatch market to cool than the smartphone ecosystem it was supposed to emulate. The interest curve of early adopters to mainstream consumer acceptance seemed to happen fairly quickly, but the falloff was, I think, far more severe than anyone realized. I'm referring mainly to the Wear OS (née Android Wear) and not to the Apple Watch, which as Apple products usually are, seem to be immune to category softening (though one could argue that the Apple Watch never quite took off as many pundits believed it should have). This brings me to the current environment for Android-based smartwatches. There's a new name, Wear OS, and the promise of upgrades to come, but right now, all but a few tech companies have bowed out of the race. It's unlikely we'll see successors to the LG Watch Style and Sport this year, despite being modeled as the "Nexuses" of Android Wear in early 2017, and Samsung long-ago decid

Galaxy S8, Note 8 get GIF support for Always On Display

Image
Samsung's flagship smartphones have included the Always On Display (AOD) feature for several years now, giving users a way to glance at essential information like notifications, battery level, and the time, by keeping these details constantly displayed even when the device is asleep. Since then, the feature has become more customizable in terms of color and clock style, and even … Continue reading #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

HOW TO: Making use of your Android phone’s split-screen feature

Image
When Android Nougat rolled out, a lot of people were happy that Android finally had a native split-screen mode they are able to use. Before Nougat, the split-screen feature was only available natively to Samsung flagships and a few other phones. Google finally fixed that with Android 7.0. Fast forward two years and you would think a lot more people would be using this feature. The fact of the matter is, split-screen multitasking is one of the least used features in Android. So we're here to tell you that in case you didn't know, split screen mode is now available for most modern Android devices, especially if you run Android Nougat or better. There are a lot of situations in your daily usage of your Android device where split-screen would not only be applicable, but would also make your life that much more comfortable. Here's how to use split-screen mode. Requirements: An Android smartphone or tablet running Android Nougat or better Stock Android is best

The invisible home screen: an ultra minimal theme, or excellent April Fool's Day prank

Image
This theme pulls double duty as an April Fool's prank and testament to Android's customizable beauty. There are few themes that are quite as flexible and adaptable as what I like to call the "invisible" home screen. It's a theme that could only exist on Android, and it is both high art and farce. It is both a prank and a functional beauty. Setting up this theme is quite easy, it can work with just about any wallpaper, and it's like turning your home screen into a fun little magic trick. This is the invisible home screen, and here's how you can pull it off. There are two methods to utilize in this theme — completely clear app icons and gesture launcher shortcuts — and while the former is available on almost any launcher that allows custom icons, the latter is a little harder to come by. In the interest of expediency, we're going to give you instructions for this theme in our two favorite theming launchers: Nova Launcher and Action Launche
