Check out the Material Design Refresh of the Google I/O 2018 app

Image
The Google I/O 2018 Android app features many Material Design Refresh themes. An update to the original Material Design, Material Design Refresh is a design language made by Google. We will likely learn a lot more about Material Design Refresh at Google I/O 2018, which is less than two weeks away. First, there was Material Design : a design language put together by Google to give clear instructions on how to design Android products to match the intended aesthetic of the operating system. Now, this year we are seeing the rollout of the updated language, Material Design Refresh (formerly with the less clever title Material Design 2). We've already seen some Material Design Refresh efforts show up in Canary versions of the Chrome browser . Now, we can see some in the Google I/O 2018 app , available to all on the Google Play Store . install the google i/o 2018 app Obviously, if you're not attending Google I/O 2018 the app won't be incredibly useful for

Comment: Xiaomi’s profit margin cap doesn’t mean a thing

Image
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun made the surprise announcement yesterday that the Beijing-based company will "forever" cap net profit margins on hardware at five percent. If you didn't know any better, you'd think that's a generous move. Finally, a company isn't going looking for egregious amounts of profit at your expense, right? Wrong. The Xiaomi announcement is a ruse and should be dismissed. Here's why, and here's why it should matter to you. Not mentioned: Xiaomi is far from a five-percent margin Net profit margin comes after all costs are taken into account, including corporate tax. The percentage is taken by dividing net income (which is after tax, depreciation, interest, and so on) by revenue. What Xiaomi doesn't want you to know is that it doesn't make a five percent net profit on hardware yet, and may never. While big businesses usually manage to get to that point and beyond it, very few smartphone manufacturers are close to that profi

New Snapchat Spectacles have more features, but are still ugly

Image
The Verge The new Snapchat Spectacles are smaller, water-resistant, and take photos as well as videos. However, they are $20 more expensive than the original, and still feature an awkward system to download your media. Oh yeah, and they're still ugly. You can buy yourself a pair right now from the dedicated Spectacles website. While Snap, Inc. tried valiantly with its original Snapchat Spectacles , its first step into hardware was pretty much an utter failure for the company. Selling less than 200,000 units, Spectacles resulted in a $40 million loss and the firings of a dozen Snap employees, according to The Verge . But, undeterred, Snap is ready to give Spectacles another shot. Starting today, you can buy the brand new, second-generation Snapchat Spectacles directly from the Spectacles website . Black LG G7 ThinQ gets the leaked press render treatment too

Image
We've already seen the upcoming LG G7 ThinQ in a group press render showing all its color versions, and then the gray (or silver) variation got a close-up . Now it's time for the exact same thing to happen to the G7's black iteration, courtesy of the press render you can see below, which comes from Evan Blass, @evleaks . Of course it doesn't show anything new - the screen's notch is still there (its chin too), the dual rear cameras are vertically aligned on the back, the fingerprint sensor is below those, and then there's the G7 ThinQ branding, so you never forget about the phone's convoluted name, or the AI features that inspired it. The G7 will rock a 6.1" Full Vision "Super Bright Display" with 3,120x1,440 resolution and 19.5:9 aspect ratio. You will be able to hide the notch . At the helm will be Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chipset . The handset will become official on May 2 . Source #Google #Android #Smartphones

Snapchat Intros New AR Lenses Called Snappables

Image
Hot on the heels of Snap Inc.'s newest iteration of its Spectacles wearable, the company has introduced a new set of Lenses called Snappables aimed at bringing a truly AR experience to Snapchat. Unlike the more traditional Lenses, however, these are much more focused on sharing AR gaming experiences which utilize facial expressions, touch, and motion as controls. It's fairly easy to get started, too. The Snappables can be found in Snapchat's Lens Carousel just to the left of the circle-shaped capture button. The other icons – for World and Face Lenses, respectively – have been moved to the right-hand side of that. As with other additions, this is a global rollout that will arrive via an app update. So it bears repeating that it could take some time before it hits every device. With regard to the experiences themselves, Snap categorizes the new Lenses into two different groups. Following on-screen instructions, users and their friends or family can gather virtually in a

Data: Q1 2018 Smartphone Shipments In China Declined 21% Annually

Image
Smartphone shipments in China declined 21-percent in Q1 2018 compared to the same quarter in the year before, according to the latest data from Canalys . In short, the market analyst firm states the total number of smartphone shipments in China in the first quarter of this year totaled 91 million units. This is in comparison to the 114 million unit shipments noted for the first quarter of 2017. According to the firm, this represents the lowest quarterly shipment number in China since before Q4, 2013. What's more, is this seems to be an industry-wide issue with Canalys noting eight out of the top ten vendors saw some form of decline over the year, with Gionee, Meizu and Samsung specifically mentioned as some of those feeling the impact. The data not only highlights how the market shrunk over the last year, but also the choice is shrinking as well with the 'big four' (Huawei, OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi) now occupying more of the market than ever before. Therefore, at the market

OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers special edition could be available in UK as well

Image
So we've pretty much confirmed that OnePlus will be launching a Marvel Avengers special edition of their upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 6 , in India. This is to coincide with the marketing of what will probably be a worldwide phenomenon even at this stage – that is, the Avengers: Infinity War movie. OnePlus's video confirms that this special version will be launched in the Indian subcontinent, but who knows? It might actually make it to the UK as well. OnePlus capitalizing on movie tie-ups is not new – they did it with Star Wars as well. But two days from the release of the Infinity War movie and it's looking like it will be a juggernaut in the box office. It was a great move probably from the OnePlus marketing team to put out a Marvel Avengers limited edition OnePlus 6 . VIDEO It is confirmed to launch in India, but from what it looks like, rumors are pointing to a UK launch as well. The limited edition phone will most likely have a 256GB internal storage

Garmin’s ‘Approach S10’ Watch Helps You Up Your Golf Game

Image
Garmin's 'Approach S10' watch will help you up your Golf game by giving you access to useful and important information right from your wrist, while also providing you with things like GPS, something which Garmin is most well-known for. That said the Approach S10 is more than just a watch with GPS and a few Golf-related features. That said one of the main focuses of this watch is to let the wearer know just how far they are from the green, and of course the watch is able to offer up this information thanks to the GPS inside of the watch. It accesses your GPS location and will tell you on the display how far you are from the green from the front, back, and middle of it. The display is 1.3-inches in size so it should be plenty big enough for users to see all the necessary data at any point in time and boasting a battery life of up to 12 hours before needing to be recharged the Approach S10 makes for a good daily companion on the course. Speaking of courses, the Approach S1

Will Google “kill” Android to beat Apple?

Image
Back a few years ago, before the most major pouring out of popularity for smartphones, there was AOSP. That's the Android Open Source Project – and it still exists today. With the latest developments in AOSP with regard to Google's next operating system development, Fuchsia, I wondered today: Will Google maintain Android? Google makes some money with Android. They do … Continue reading #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

Samsung’s Galaxy S9 Active may arrive with a 4,000 mAh battery and same 5.8-inch display

Image
After several years of launching an "Active" variant of its flagship phones, it should come as no surprise that Samsung is actively working on the Galaxy S9 Active. While most details about the phone are unclear at the moment, this week we're getting our first peek… The best gifts for Android users Samsung has launched Active variants of its S-series lineup for the past few years, so there aren't really any surprises when it comes to the S9 Active. As you might expect, the phone will simply be a more ruggedized version of the standard Galaxy S9, but with most of the same specs. According to SamMobile , those specs will include the same 5.8-inch display that's found on the regular Galaxy S9. Again, that comes as no shocker. As usual, that display will likely also ditch the curve, and have ever-so-slightly thicker bezels. More notably, the S9 Active is said to carry over one of the best parts of the S8 Active that came before it  – t

Deal: SanDisk Ultra 200GB Micro SD Card for $56 – 4/26/18

Image
Amazon currently has the SanDisk Ultra 200GB Micro SD Card on sale for just $55.99. That's a great price for this micro SD card, seeing as it is typically around $100 a pop. So that's a great price to add some more storage to your smartphone. The SanDisk Ultra is a 200GB micro SD card from the king of memory products. This is part of SanDisk's Ultra lineup, which means you're getting some fast read and write speeds here. We're looking at 100MB/s on both ends, and there is also A1 support here. This means that you can store apps and games on your micro SD card without them loading slower then on the internal storage. This is why Adoptable Storage sometimes seems slower with other micro SD cards, because it's not using the A1 standard. With 200GB of storage, you're going to have plenty of space for storing music, movies, pictures and more. Some phones do support Adoptable Storage – mostly Motorola devices – while the others allow you to store media on them.

Fuchsia support for Android Runtime appears in AOSP

Image
Today, Fuchsia has made a surprising entrance into Android's source code that could have a huge impact on the future of both operating systems. Discovered by forkbomb444 on XDA, the proposed change seems to introduce support for the Zircon kernel, (the foundational layer of Fuchsia and Google's alternative to Linux), to the Android Runtime. This should sound familiar to our readers, as we discussed last weekend on Fuchsia Friday, the possibility of the Android Runtime coming to Fuchsia. The core idea is that Fuchsia will certainly need Android app support if it intends to take over as the next mobile OS without having to recreate every Android app developers have ever made. I had proposed that this could be done by running a slim Linux virtual machine built with just the Android Runtime. What today's change may indicate instead is that Google may port the Android Runtime to work directly on Fuchsia via the Zircon kernel. This is not a confirmation that Fuch

AT&T Remains Reserved About 5G Fixed Wireless Access: CFO

Image
AT&T is still reserved about 5G fixed wireless access solutions, the company's Chief Financial Officer John Stephens said during a recent earnings call with analysts, as reported by FierceWireless. The executive revealed the nation's second largest wireless carrier has already been testing 5G FWA technologies, with its trials showing "it can be done," yet its overall stance toward leveraging 5G to deliver a broadband alternative remains skeptical. The promise that 5G FWA is showing is "not as compelling yet, for us, as it may be for some," Mr. Stephens said. The comment itself is widely interpreted as a dig at Verizon who has been touting 5G FWA as the first major consumer-facing benefit of the new wireless technologies, having gone as far as to focus its initial deployment efforts exclusively on that solution, whereas its 5G mobile service will only start rolling out next year. Verizon often argued prioritizing non-fixed 5G in 2018 is pointless from

Hi-Rez Studios' mobile MOBA 'Paladins Strike' is available worldwide

Image
Hi-Rez Studios is best known for their console and PC games. Most notably their 3rd-person MOBA Smite is one of their biggest successes, though many may have the opinion it has seen better days. It would appear that Hi-Rez is no longer satisfied with the console and PC market, as they are now branching out into mobile gaming with the release of  Paladins Strike . If the name sounds familiar, that is because they already have a hero shooter available for consoles and PC called Paladins: Champions of the Realm . This release simply takes the characters and lore from that title to create an offshoot game that is better suited for for play on mobile. VIDEO You can expect 5v5 battles and a choice of more than 15 different characters. Combat, of course, takes place in real time, and you can easily join up with your friends to play through the escort mode Siege or call upon a mighty juggernaut in the Summons gameplay mode. Like most MOBAs this plays from a top-down view. The
