Samsung Galaxy A6 Mid-Range Lineup Leaks In Official Renders

Image
Samsung's Galaxy A6 lineup of Android mid-rangers leaked yet again prior to its official release, with the new handsets also receiving certification from China's telecom regulator TENAA in recent days, and both sightings being in line with previous reports about the devices. The larger set of images was obtained by German tech outlet WinFuture and can be seen in the gallery below, with the materials apparently being mined directly from one of Samsung's websites. The renders confirm Samsung's next mid-range series will consist of the Galaxy A6 and Galaxy A6 Plus, both of which will sport Super AMOLED Infinity Display panels with an 18.5:9 aspect ratio. The smaller device will sport a 5.6-inch HD+ (1,480 x 720) screen, whereas the larger one will have a 6-inch FHD+ (2,220 x 1,080) display, with the successors to the Galaxy A5 (2017) series being positioned as more affordable alternatives to the Galaxy A8 product family Samsung introduced late last year, offering moder

Are Amazon Echo Buttons worth it?

Image
A pair of Amazon Echo Buttons. ( $20 at Amazon ) If you'll use 'em, sure. I have a confession to make. I ordered the Amazon Echo Buttons when they were first announced. And I didn't take them out of the box for months. Months . That's not usually the sort of thing you'd expect to read in a post asking if these things are worth it. I know. So let's flip things on their head yet again: Yes, Amazon Echo Buttons are worth it. If you actually use them. What are Amazon Echo Buttons? Ah! Good question. An Amazon Echo Button is a $20 pair of buttons that work with an Amazon Echo. Actually, these things maybe should have been called Amazon Echo Buzzers. Because they're basically like a battery-powered game-show buzzer that works with an Amazon Echo. But it's probably a good thing they didn't called Amazon Echo Buzzer. That just sounds weird. Anyway. You'll connect up to four of these things to the Amazon Echo, and fire up a game o

Google Search in India adds Knowledge Graph cards to quickly find exam results

Image
India is a very important market for tech companies, with Google referring to the entire region as where the " next billion users " will come from. To that extent, it has launched a number of specialized products , with the latest being Knowledge Graph cards in Search for exam results. Nintendo Switch Aimed at helping students access test scores without having to deal with hard to locate and slow to load sites, the latest Search card makes it easy to find JEE Main exam results. When a student looks for "JEE Main results," they will be able to directly find their scores and breakdowns from within Google Search. They simply have to enter their roll number and date of birth into a new Knowledge Graph card: Working directly with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Google notes that these exam results will be available on the Google Search results page as soon as they are announced. Additionally, the data is handled secur

Study says Google Assistant most accurate among voice assistants

Image
The 2018 edition of a study conducted by Stone Temple Consulting on voice assistants once again shows that Google Assistant is the strongest performer in terms of volume and accuracy of answers to queries. Microsoft's Cortana is a surprising second while Alexa is third but most improved and Siri was last (although with some improvement as well). Meanwhile, a study by Digital Agency ROAST that focuses on Google Assistant showed it was only able to answer 45% of the queries asked from it. The Stone Temple 2018 virtual assistant study involved almost 5,000 queries and compared it across the Alexa, Cortana, Google Assistant (Home and smartphone), and Siri. When it came to the percentage of answers attempted and the % of fully and correctly answered queries, Google Assistant was still number 1. While Alexa is arguably the most popular one given the number of Echo devices sold, it still has much to improve as it was just third, but at least it showed the biggest improvement since

Twitter will begin bundling tweets with the same link in your feed

Image
... One moment you're opening up Twitter, hopeful to find a variety of content from all the interesting people you've followed, the next you're stuck checking post after post with the same story being reported by many of the people in your feed. Twitter is hoping to fix that by bundling all the tweets with the same link together, as one story, so that you can see the embedded preview once and all the different comments on it grouped together below it. This change is starting to roll out to Android, iOS, and web users, according to a Twitter spokesperson who confirmed it to BuzzFeed . I have tried to see if I can spot it in my timeline, but there was no sign of it, either because the people I follow have zero common interests right now or because the feature hasn't rolled out to me yet. And while this does seem like a further departure from a linear timeline toward a curated newsfeed, as someone who rarely checks Twitter, I do like this

Deal: Fitbit Alta For $100, Fitbit Alta HR for $120 – 4/30/18

Image
Amazon currently has the Fitbit Alta on sale for $100 and the Alta HR for just $120. Which is good for $30 off of both models, making it a great time to pick one up and start tracking your daily activity. The Fitbit Alta is the smallest fitness tracker from the company, that has an actual display. It'll show you the time, but also display how many steps you've taken, calories burned and so forth. The Fitbit Alta can track just about everything you can think of. That also includes different exercises, like running, walking, biking and more. Now the Alta is not waterproof, so it can't track your swimming, unfortunately. Fitbit says that the Alta can last around four days on a single charge. Now the Alta and Alta HR are largely the same, with the only difference being the heart rate monitor on the Alta HR. If you just want a fitness tracker and don't care about a heart rate monitor, then the regular Fitbit Alta is going to be a great option for most people. There are ma

Stock Android vs Android One vs Android Go

Image
What's the difference between stock Android , Android One , and Android Go ? Each is a flavor of Android, each originates from Google and all have a few things in common. But there are some big differences in the way in which smartphone makers use the open source software, how security updates are released, what pre-installed apps are included, and more. Today we're clearing up any confusion. Note: For clarity, we're defining stock Android as whatever Google ships on its own hardware. There are obviously differences between the Android found on Nexus phones and that found on Pixels, but given the demise of the Nexus program, we'll be referring to the Pixels' software as stock Android throughout what follows. The (normal) Android experience The way it works for a traditional OEM like Samsung or LG or Huawei would be that Google publishes the source code for Android – part of its Android Open Source Project (AOSP) – and then anybody can take that code a

[Deal Alert] Google Clips is down to $199 ($50 off) on the Google Store

Image
... Google's Clips is quite unlike any camera you've seen before. Announced along with the Pixel 2 in October 2017 , this camera uses machine learning to detect when something interesting is happening and automatically take motion photos (think short videos without sound). Google seemed to target it to households with kids or pets where parents may want to leave the camera laying around and then check it out to see if it captured anything interesting. However, with a price tag as high as $250 and a launch date that slipped way into February/early March , Clips sort of came to market without much fanfare. Now Google is momentarily discounting it by $50 on the Google Store, perhaps to help speed up its adoption. Starting today, April 30, and until March 13 at 11:59pm PT time, interested buyers can grab a Google Clips camera for $199 instead of $249 on the Google Store. The offer is valid in the US, the only country where Clips is officially selling,

Analyst: Sprint Could Lose Nearly $9B In Value If Merger Fails

Image
On Sunday, Sprint and T-Mobile announced that the two companies had signed an agreement to merge, with the latter paying $26 billion for Sprint. Today, analysts, as well as the CEO's of both companies, have been doing interviews before the stock market opened up this morning. Craig Moffett from MoffettNathanson was on CNBC this morning talking about the merger, and Moffett believes that if the deal falls through, that Sprint could lost nearly a third of its market cap or around $9 billion. That means that the stock could drop to $4. This morning, Sprint's stock opened down around 13-percent on the news of the merger yesterday. Moffett also said that he believes there is a 50/50 chance that the government approves of this merger. This is a merger that the four companies (T-Mobile and its parent company Deutsche Telekom, Sprint and its parent company SoftBank) have been talking about for many years. It had attempted to merge under the Obama Administration, but the FCC and Ju

Google Co-Founder Sees AI & Crypto As Computing Catalysts

Image
Google Co-Founder and Alphabet President Sergey Brin put out his annual founder's letter pertaining to the concluded business of 2017 and what to look forward to, having written that artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency are the two largest factors that are now catalyzing continued innovation in the computing space. His letter centers not just on Alphabet and Google, but on the larger tech sphere, how it's developing, and Alphabet's role in that ongoing process. According to Brin, Alphabet's main role is to continue finding innovative use cases for AI that genuinely benefit mankind, as has been done with Google Search, Waymo, and related tech efforts. Brin spoke excitedly about Google's experiments in quantum computing. The company is currently developing a 72-qubit quantum computer, which offers a theoretical level of computing power that millions of conventional computers working together could not match. Taking the company's name and history into ac

You can now leave reviews of Google Assistant actions and apps

Image
Google Assistant may have launched with somewhat limited capabilities, but over the past year or so the company's "Actions on Google" platform has exploded with thousands of excellent apps and integrations. Now, users can provide feedback on those with reviews. The best gifts for Android users Some interactions with third-party software on Google Assistant feels very native, like home control or weather information. Other actions, though, require a bit more to access. Unlike Amazon's Alexa, Google Assistant has all of its various actions live at the same time, meaning you need to know what to say to trigger them. To make that a bit easier, Google has a library available to show you what's out there . The massive library is available on your phone and the web , and makes it relatively easy to see what you can do with these various actions and apps. In the past, however, there was no way to know if that functionality worked well. As
