Image
Waymo is set to launch a public ride sharing service later this year, with the pilot program hitting the one year mark last month . The Alphabet division today announced its latest milestone of autonomously driving eight million miles since its inception as Google's Self-Driving Car project. Nintendo Switch CEO John Krafcik shared the figure this morning, with the latest million mark reached in just over a month, or approximately 40 days. For comparison, Waymo's vehicles reached five million miles in February after four months. It took two months in April and June to reach six and seven million, respectively. Started in 2009, the first million took six years. Today, it only takes the company one month, with Krafcik noting 25K miles logged per day in real-world experience. Meanwhile, the Alphabet company has billions of more miles driven in a computer simulation called " Carcraft ." Waymo's fleet is rapidly expanding with an order

Phone Comparisons: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs LG G7 ThinQ

Image
Introduction Do we have a good one for you today – the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 goes head-to-head with the new LG G7 ThinQ . Does the Galaxy Note 8, which debuted in August 2017, still have what it takes to beat out one of the newer devices from LG? Is it time for Galaxy Note 8 owners to upgrade to the Galaxy S9 Plus or wait for the new Galaxy Note 9, or should the LG G6 owners upgrade to the new G7 ThinQ? These questions and more are what we hope to answer in this comparison. Both devices look the part of a flagship smartphone with their extended aspect ratios and small bezels. With discounts on the Note 8, pricing is similar for each device. The Note series and the LG G series are designed for different audiences, so it will have to come down to brand, design, and individual features. The displays are almost the same size, with the Note 8 coming out a little larger. They both use the QHD+ resolution, an 18.5:9/19.5:9 aspect ratio, an Always-On display, and both are protected by Gor

Lilac Purple Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Shown Off In New Leak

Image
A new image said to be of the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 in Lilac Purple has now leaked online. The image comes from the Netherlands-based NieuweMobiel and is said to be an official render. This is the same outlet that recently released renders of the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2018). In terms of the Galaxy Note 9 shown here, the report picks up on the August 24 date shown on the phone, suggesting that may be when the phone from Samsung becomes available to buy. The image is in line with previous images that have come through showcasing a design that is very similar to the Galaxy Note 8. With the exception of the re-positioning of the fingerprint sensor and a larger sensor in the two-camera module on the back of the device. Both points that have been suggested before. The report also suggests the side buttons are positioned slightly higher than on the Note 8. As for the color, this image does seem to confirm a Lilac Purple Galaxy Note 9 is on the way. This is not the first time this color has b

Quick reply support for Chrome on Android in testing

Image
... Quick replies were first introduced around two years ago with Android 7.0 Nougat, making it more convenient for everyone to respond to messages without having to open a new app for each one. Google is now testing quick replies for Chrome on Android, though the feature isn't yet accessible to any of us commonfolk. Websites can already send notifications via Chrome on Android devices, but quick reply support would make things much more streamlined for chat-related sites. PWAs in particular would greatly benefit from this addition. Unlike many of the flags we spy on Chromium Gerrit, this feature isn't available for any public Chrome channel yet. So for now, you'll have to sit tight. We'll let you guys know when we hear more information on the topic. #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

Smartwatches and other accessories face looming threat of new Chinese-import tariffs

Image
The world of international commerce is a complicated one, and the particular path a product takes as it evolves from raw materials, to discrete components, to a final, assembled gadget can have a big impact on what it ends up costing. Right now, shoppers in the U.S. are concerned about what impact new tariffs on Chinese imports might have on all manner of consumer goods, from cars to portable electronics. Now some newly published rulings spell out exactly what what kinds of gadgets we may be about to see become slightly more expensive. When we last checked in with President Trump's plans for tariffs , there was concern that levies against fully assembled smartphones would bump up prices here in the States. Over the past few months, though, the scope of these tariffs has shifted, and Trump has reassured phone-makers like Apple that their handsets won't be targeted. But that still leaves a lot of other product types vulnerable to these new fees, and as companies try

DEAL: Save $40 on a 3-Pack of Google WiFi at Amazon

Image
I've been using Google WiFi in my home since launch and I love it. If you've been in the market for a mesh system for your own home, Google's is a solid choice, and Amazon is currently selling a 3-pack for $258 ($40 off usual $299 price). With it, you have your first point connected to your modem, then can wirelessly connect up to two additional WiFi points throughout your home for better signal. Since my office is upstairs, I have two points up there, plus one in the living room to hardwire a SHIELD TV and provide better WiFi signal for guests. It's very clutch and I recommend it for everyone. If you don't already own Google WiFi, it's likely you haven't kept up to date on the new features it has received since launch. Thanks to a recent update, users can check the speeds of individual devices on their network and another update  provided site blocking settings. If interested, follow the link below. Galaxy A6 get closer to a release on AT&T and Sprint in the United States

Image
The Galaxy A6 has been in the works for a release in the United States for some time. Word initially got out that the handset would be launched by AT&T , but we were later able to exclusively confirm that Sprint will be launching the A6 as well . A precise release date or time frame for either carrier is still a mystery, but freshly received Wi-Fi certifications for the AT&T  (SM-A600A) and Sprint Galaxy A6  (SM-A600P) models hint at an imminent arrival. Galaxy A6 US launch imminent Of course, Wi-Fi certifications don't usually offer the correct estimate for how soon an upcoming phone would launch. But it does tell us that the wheels are in motion and the phone could be made official for the aforementioned US carriers soon. It remains to be seen which carrier will release it first, though it's possible both will announce availability around the same time. The specs of the device aren't expected to change compared to the global model. What would be interesting

New Sony Xperia XZ3 Case Renders Leak Confirming Design

Image
The Sony Xperia XZ3 has leaked again through the emergence of a number of new case renders. The cases are Olixar-branded cases from Mobile Fun and confirm a number of the design points associated with the phone. Including the use of a 5.1-inch display, the absence of a notch, and an overall design that is not that dissimilar to the current Sony Xperia XZ2 lineup. Likewise, the new renders further add to the confirmation that a dual rear camera setup (vertically stacked) will be included on the phone. At present that is the extent to the information through this new leak, although the Xperia XZ3 has not been short on leaks in general recently. In fact, only a few days ago the same online retailer put up a pre-order listing for the phone along with a €849.99 European price. Suggesting the Xperia XZ3 is going to arrive as an expensive smartphone. That previous leak also added more substance to the specs, with the confirmation of a 2160 x 1080 resolution (which in turn suggests an 18:9
