Image
With new hardware and software options that continue to get better and better, there's no time like now to buy a smartwatch. While iOS users are pretty limited in what they  could  buy, Android users have too many choices to count. Not sure where to start looking? Let's go over some of the best options… The best gifts for Android users A note of caution: The smartwatch market was pretty much silent for  months , but recently it's come back to life. While I love seeing new hardware as much as the next guy, there's a lot to consider if you're buying a smartwatch right now. As great as all this new hardware, and even older hardware, may be, there's something big on the horizon. Qualcomm is preparing to launch a new generation of wearable processors at an event in September. That's likely going to mean new hardware (possibly from Google) and maybe even new capabilities within wearable operating systems. So at least for the next f

YouTube TV Adds 100th Service Area

Image
YouTube TV added three new markets today to reach its 100th service area. Those new markets are Kingsport, TN, Johnson City, TN, and Bristol, TN/VA. Cool. In case you were wondering, both Tim and I are still using YouTube TV and also still think it's awesome. Assuming you have a decent internet connection and don't need Food Network, HGTV, or Travel Channel, it's kind of a no-brainer TV option. The hell with Comcast. #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 earns DisplayMate’s award for best-performing smartphone screen

Image
Aug 14 AT 11:51 AM Evan Selleck 0 Comments Way back in August of last year, you might remember that the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 earned DisplayMate's highest ever A+ grade for its OLED display . Well, Samsung's back at it again this year. The Galaxy Note 9 was just announced last week , and the smartphone has already started earning its accolades. Testing performed by DisplayMate has revealed that the upcoming phablet has an amazing display. It's so good, in fact, that it has earned DisplayMate's A+ grade and is the best-performing display the group has tested to date. The tests show that the Galaxy Note 9 "matches or sets many new Smartphone Display Performance Records", and notes that the phablet's color accuracy is "visually indistinguishable from perfect". The "Absolute Picture Quality" was also improved over the Galaxy Note 8 from last year. The Galaxy Note 9 also has the lowest Screen Reflecta

DisplayMate: Samsung Galaxy Note9 has the best display ever

Image
Everyone interested in mobile phones knows that Samsung makes one of the best - if not the best - OLED panels. Every Samsung flagship for years has offered great viewing experience, so no wonder every OEM wants to get its hands on the Korean firm's crisp OLED displays. But how good is the recently announced Galaxy Note9 's panel? Well, according to DisplayMate , it's the best so far. Just like every Samsung flagship since the Note 4 . For yet another year the Korean company has managed to outdo itself. As always, the Note9 went under extensive testing and broke a few records along the way. Well, "a few" is an understatement. One of the key findings in the review says that the panel reaches a maximum brightness of 710 nits in manual mode and 1,050 nits in automatic mode. It also covers 113% DCI-P3 and 142% of the sRGB color space and has the highest absolute color accuracy. Interestingly, the Note9's display offers the lowest reflectance (4.4%) eve

Sprint and LG say they'll offer the first 5G phone in the first half of 2019

Image
... Every carrier now has a robust and mature 4G LTE network, so it's almost time to start rolling out a new wireless standard. 5G service will start popping up at the end of this year, but there won't be phones until 2019. Sprint and LG had partnered to launch what they claim will be the first 5G phone in the US. The unnamed device will reportedly arrive in the first half of 2019. We don't know what this mysterious device will be called or what it'll look like. However, Sprint is keen to point out that it's a "truly integrated smartphone." The 5G Moto Mod may very well make the Moto Z3 the first 5G-capable phone, but there's no 5G modem inside the phone itself. The phone hardware is already done, according to Sprint. That means it won't have the universal 4G/5G modem in the upcoming Snapdragon 855 chipset. So, we can expect the phone to have a secondary X50 5G modem in addition to the SoC's 4G modem. Sprint wo

NVIDIA Shield TV Smart Home Edition comes with a SmartThings Link hub for $219.99 ($1 more than if bought separately)

Image
Despite how much I love my Shield TV and how often we use it in my household for streaming videos and playing games, I can't help but scratch my head a little at what NVIDIA is doing here. The company is rehashing its streaming box for the umpteenth time with another bundle and no price incentive to make anyone want to jump on board. The new 2017 Shield TV, which was more or less a rehashed version of the older one, already comes in three versions: a $299 Pro with 500GB of storage and some hardware enhancements, a $179 16GB version with just the remote, and a $199 16GB with the remote and the game controller. Now there's another bundle with the addition of a SmartThings Link hub. This new Smart Home Edition costs $219.99, which is $1 more than what you get by adding $179 for the regular version with remote and  $39.99 for the Link . That makes no sense. You're actually slightly better off buying the items separately than together. And if you're patient eno

Last week, Google pushed out the newest version of Android called Pie. The update brings plenty of exciting new features and updates to play with, so naturally, users are quite eager to try them out for themselves. But the big question following almost every major Android release each year is: will my phone get it? And when? Well to cut through some of the speculation and uncertainty, some OEMs have already released statements promising the Android 9.0 Pie update for some of their devices. You can already get Android Pie if you have one of Google's own Pixel phones or the Essential PH-1 . But the new update is also coming to a number of other handsets in the near feature. Check the list below to see which devices will be part of the first wave getting the Pie treatment. HTC HTC was among the first Android manufacturer to provide a statement regarding plans to release the Pie update for some of its handsets. We're pleased as pie to confirm updates to

Google says a fix is coming for fast-charging problems with original Pixel and Pixel XL

Image
Google is currently testing a software fix that will fully restore the fast-charge functionality of its 2016 Pixel smartphones after users reported slower charging speeds following the recent upgrade to Android 9 Pie. Some third-party charging plugs no longer rapidly charge the Pixel XL in the same way that they did prior to Pie's release; Google says its own bundled charger (and others certified for USB Power Delivery) should still be delivering rapid charging. An update containing the fix should be available "in the coming weeks." "We're aware of an issue where non-Power Delivery (PD) USB-C chargers no longer rapidly charge the 2016 Pixel and Pixel XL after the upgrade to Android 9 Pie," a Google spokesperson told The Verge by email. "The 18W rapid charger included in-box is a PD charger and does not exhibit this behavior. We are verifying a fix for non-PD USB-C chargers and will roll it out in the coming weeks." Vivo has grown to become a significant force in the smartphone industry, and its latest phone, the Vivo NEX S highlights how the company is not afraid to do things a little different to the rest. As while the Vivo NEX S look like a standard smartphone on the surface, it's one which boasts a less than orthodox camera setup. Due to the Vivo NEX S sporting a pop-up front-facing camera. Not only does this add a novelty and futuristic element to the design, but it also means the front panel has been freed of the constraints of a stationary camera. If all that was not enough, this phone also includes an in-display fingerprint sensor, and now you have the chance to win a Vivo NEX S for free, courtesy of AndroidHeadlines .
