Amazon Digital Day 2018 kicks off on December 28 with thousands of deals

Image
Friday December 28 will be the date which Amazon's third annual Digital Day will take place, offering up thousands of deals on digital content from in-game purchases to digital magazines, novels, and so much more. Some of the deals will go live as early as December 26, though the biggest discounts are going to be available starting at 12:00 am PST on December 28, so you may want to set an alarm. Unlike many of the sales leading up to the holidays, the digital day sale focuses on filling up your new hardware with great content. It's the perfect time to save on new games, books, movies, apps, eBooks, and so much more. Some of the deals Amazon says we can expect to see include: Save up to 75% off Kindle best-selling books, including titles such as Manhattan Beach, In the Midst of Winter, My Squirrel Days, Summer I Turned Pretty, Indianapolis, and Great At Work Save up to 80% off best-selling Marvel graphic novels like Jessica Jones: Blind Spot, Runaways Vol. 1:

Anthony Levandowski’s new Pronto.ai startup has already autonomously driven 3099 miles cross country

Image
Anthony Levandowski has had quite the run recently. The autonomous driving prodigy worked at Google for almost a decade and was an integral part of its autonomous driving efforts that spun from Google (X) into Waymo. In 2016, he exited from Google's Waymo to found a startup called Otto which was snapped up by Uber that is partially owned by Google Ventures. Unfortunately for all involved, Levandowski left the GooglePlex with more than just his belongings and ended up the main defendant in a rare Waymo vs. Uber civil case which was settled where Google got an even bigger chunk of Uber and a promise from Uber not to use its tech. In the meantime, Levandowski established a religious organization called 'Way of the Future' to develop and promote the realization of a Godhead based on Artificial Intelligence. It reads like a "I, for one, welcome our new AI overlords". Now he's back with an interesting startup called Pronto.ai that promises to change auto

Amazon Explores Security AI Tech Fit For An Orwellian Novel: Report

Image
Amazon appears to be exploring a new AI-enhanced security solution driven by behavioral analysis that might be well-suited for a story set in some dystopian future akin to a George Orwell novel, according to new intellectual property documentation reviewed by Android Headlines . The firm's latest invention is described as encompassing video searching device, systems, and methods to determine whether behavior fits user-defined criteria across multiple video clips. That would be conducted using machine vision and artificial intelligence using comparative methods not dissimilar to those utilized in other technologies in those categories. 'Search' terms in the subsequent behavioral search engine would effectively be scanned for in real-time and with a focus on the subject's path of movement, allowing for secondary devices that normally work independently to be incorporated too. For example, a series of smart motion detection lights might determine that a subject is moving t

Samsung Mounting New AR Push After An Underwhelming Year: Report

Image
Samsung is preparing a new augmented-reality push following what's been a largely underwhelming year for its ambitions in the consumer electronics segment, according to new intellectual property documentation reviewed by  Android Headlines . The South Korean manufacturer intends to advertise its new solutions as part of an ecosystem called "AR World" which could ultimately span everything from smartphone technologies to dedicated headsets. Three-dimensional audio is another tech avenue currently being pursued by Samsung, as are AR apps that utilize wearables. An unimaginative year and an identity crisis While Samsung as a whole did rather well in 2018 from a purely financial standpoint, its continued performance was hardly based on its latest achievements in the consumer electronics sector. The company itself admitted its main 2018 lineup of Android flagships — the Galaxy S9 — had a slow and disappointing start, so while sales picked up following some aggressiv

AT&T will turn on its 5G network this Friday

Image
AT&T will power on its 5G network in 12 US cities on December 21 (this Friday). The first device to use the network is a Netgear-made Nighthawk 5G hotspot, but you can't have one yet. For now the carrier is talking to businesses, giving them both the hotspot and the data for free. This is to gauge the interest in the new faster network. After the trial period is over the hotspot will go for $500 and the first data plan will offer 15GB for $70 a month. Note that AT&T is working on two 5G networks – sub-6GHz and mmWave. The one being launched this week is the mmWave network, which can deliver high bandwidth in crowded urban areas (but has limited coverage). The sub-6GHz network strikes a different balance – better coverage, slower speed (still faster than LTE, though). This network will launch next year. The first 5G-enabled phones should arrive early next year (starting with a Samsung Galaxy) and they won't support both network types. Phones that work on bot

Give the gift of a portable power bank that's actually portable

Image
Most battery packs and power banks are liars! They say they're portable, but what they actually are is heavy, huge, and hopeless. Most need a backpack or a purse to carry them around — or else they might pants you on a busy, crowded street. If your portable battery pack doesn't fit on your person to carry it around while you're charging at a sporting event, on an all-day hike, or in a two-hour line at Disneyland, then your power bank won't be there when you need it. Get one that will! Futureproof and phone-sized AUKEY 10000mAh USB-C Power Delivery Power Bank This power bank is on the larger side of pocketable — around the same size as a Note 9 — but I really like the AUKEY for three reasons: it has USB-C for input and output, two USB-A ports, and it supports both QC 3.0 and Power Delivery fast charging standards. $30 at Amazon Most popular Anker PowerCore 10000 There is a newer Anker PowerCore 10000 available, but that model is larger and whi

Controversial ex-Uber engineer claims to have completed a coast-to-coast self-driving trip

Image
Anthony Levandowski, the infamous self-driving car engineer whose shenanigans helped spur a multimillion-dollar lawsuit between Waymo and Uber, is back with a new project. According to The Guardian , Levandowski designed a camera-based advanced driver assist system (ADAS) called Co-Pilot, which is aimed at the long-haul trucking industry. And to help sell his new product, Levandowski took it for a test drive: a 3,000-mile journey from San Francisco to New York without any human intervention. The coast-to-coast self-driving trip has long been held up as the ultimate demonstration of this emerging technology. Elon Musk repeatedly promised to deliver an autonomous cross-country trip, only to delay it again and again. If Levandowski actually accomplished what he says he did, it would be the longest recorded journey of a self-driving car without a human driver taking over. "If there was nobody in the car, it would have worked." The cross-country drive commenced on Oc

Lenovo Z5s official release rings a familiar bell

The Lenovo Z5s was revealed today alongside the slightly more impressive Z5 Pro GT. The Lenovo Z5s might look familiar to you – and it should, if you're a keen watcher of the worldwide smartphone release market. This device looks a whole lot like the Huawei P20 Pro – but it's just a LITTLE bit different – on the inside, … Continue reading #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

AT&T Gives Us the First Taste of 5G Pricing and It’s Looking Expensive

Image
AT&T already told us that their first 5G device would be a mobile hotspot brick and not a phone. That device is the Netgear Nighthawk 5G Mobile Hotspot and it'll soon be available to early adopters. Today, we learned pricing for this device, as well as how much data will cost should you decide to buy one. Through an early adopter offer for select customers, AT&T will hand over this Nighthawk 5G hotspot for no cost for "at least" 90 days, they said in a press release. Once spring rolls around, everyone else should be able to buy one and sign-up for a plan. At that time, the Nighthawk 5G brick will cost $499 (!) if you buy it outright and a compatible plan for it will include 15GB of data for $70 per month. How does that compare to current hotspot devices? AT&T sells at least three other devices ( like this one ) that can access their 4G LTE and 5G Evolution networks and they run anywhere from $125 to $200. So the first 5G-equipped hotspot will carry

AT&T is Already Calling 5G Something Other Than 5G

Image
AT&T announced today that its 5G network will go live on December 21 and that early adopters in select areas within select cities who want to buy a 5G mobile hotspot device, will be able to access it. The chances of you being able to use it are really slim, as we expected, but I'm more concerned about the damn name. AT&T hasn't even fully launched this thing yet and they are already calling it something other than 5G. Instead, AT&T wants it to be known as "5G+." AT&T bros, 5G isn't even real yet and you already want to call it something other than 5G? We laughed and rolled our eyes when AT&T rolled out 5G Evolution , which was in no way any part of 5G, but come on. What is AT&T 5G+? It's just standards-based mobile 5G using mmWave spectrum. It's the same sh*t every other carrier is going to launch first because it's easy to deploy like hotspot WiFi. I'm not kidding, this is just mmW 5G. It'll be fast as hell,

Google Used Machine Learning to Remove Millions of Fake Reviews and Ratings from Play Store

Image
Google Used Machine Learning to Remove Millions of Fake Reviews and Ratings from Play Store Posted by Rajesh Pandey on Dec 18, 2018 in Google Play Using human intelligence and machine learning, Google was able to heavily combat spam content and fake reviews on Google Play this year. The company says the effort led to removing millions of reviews and ratings being removed from the Play Store and thousands of malicious apps identified for suspicious reviews in just a week. Fake ratings and reviews help a poorly made or malicious app in ranking higher in Play Store lists and thereby reach a wider audience. This is obviously harmful to the entire ecosystem and also ends up negatively affecting genuine developers who put in a considerable amount of work in their apps. To improve its machine learning algorithm, a team of engineers at Google and analysts monitored and studied fake comments and suspicious activity on the Play Store. This was then followed by skille

2018 rewind: A look back at the top stories, moments and research

Image
And just like that, the curtain has closed on 2018! While the industry navigated its fair share of changes this year (just like every year before), the holiday season and the promise of a fresh start always work as a natural reminder to reflect on the past twelve months. With that in mind, here's a look back at the top stories, moments and research from Google Ad Manager that had the biggest impact on our partners. Much more to come in 2019—we'll see you then. We welcomed Google Ad Manager This year we introduced Google Ad Manager , a complete platform to grow ad revenue and protect your brand wherever people are watching, playing or engaging with your content. Bringing Ad Manager to fruition was a three year project that seamlessly folded DoubleClick Ad Exchange and DoubleClick for Publishers together into a truly unified platform.
