Google Duo testing a group calling feature, low light mode

Image
Dec 31 AT 11:02 AM Evan Selleck 0 Comments Google Allo won't be kicking around for too much longer , but Duo is doing quite well for itself. It sounds like Duo is getting a pair of new features soon. Android Police has an early look at test builds for group calling in Duo, as well as a new low light mode. There does not appear to be a specific launch date circled on the calendar just yet, and the test build is in early days so some things aren't quite working to their full potential. But it's a start! Group calling will apparently support up to seven people at once. In this particular test build, users need to create a specific group and add everyone th

Essential says they’re not done after all

The reports of Essential's death have been greatly exaggerated, apparently. That's according to Essential, at least, if you're comfortable taking their word for it. Jason Keats, Essential's head of research and development, tweeted over the weekend that Essential has lots in store for customers despite the fact that they barely sold any phones and now […] Come comment on this article: Essential says they're not done after all Visit TalkAndroid #Google #Android #Smartphones #OS #News @ndrdnws #ndrdnws #AndroidNews

Essential R&D Boss Can’t Wait to Sh*t On All the Haters

Image
The future of Essential is mostly a mystery. Since releasing a single phone a year and a half ago that only sold after dramatic price drops, nothing has come to replace it or work alongside it in any sort of family of products. The company hasn't delivered on modular accessories for that first phone, likely cancelled both a follow-up phone and its home hub, was rumored to be up for sale, has seen its founder in headlines for all the wrong reasons , and has cut a big chunk of its workforce . While we haven't exactly written off Essential, a number of other writers (apparently) have. That has fired-up the company's head of R&D. In a Tweet over the weekend that should bring some hope to Essential fans, Essential's Head of R&D, Jason Keats, said that "All these stories about Essential's demise," are feeding his "desire to rub their faces in it in the future." He went ahead and suggested that "We aren't done, not by a long sho

Samsung Galaxy M10 FCC certification reveals 6-inch display, 3,400 mAh battery

The FCC has put the upcoming Galaxy M10 through the paces of its certification process, a necessary step prior to launch. This has revealed a few more details about the smartphone that will be the entry level model in Samsung's new M series. The M10 will sport a 6-inch display and a 3,400 mAh battery. Its length and width are 155.7mm and 75.8mm, respectively. According to a past outing in a benchmark's online database, the phone is powered by the Exynos 7870 chipset, paired with 3GB of RAM and 16 or 32GB of expandable storage. The new device is probably going to launch running Android 8.1 Oreo. Rumor has it you'll get a 13 MP main camera on the rear, and a 5 MP shooter for selfies. The fingerprint sensor is likely to be on the back. The M10 will be offered in blue and dark grey color options, and it might get a limited release only in the Middle East and Asia. New service ranks smartphone manufacturers by number of updates

Image
There are many contentious topics in the realm of Android smartphones - be it notches, design materials or how many cameras a phone should have. However, one thing pretty much everyone agrees on, is that manufacturers should provide prolonged support in the form of updates, especially for expensive flagship devices. This is why the new AOSMark service will help consumers make a more informed choice - by ranking brands by the number of software updates they push out on average. Have you ever heard of CERBER? Choose "No, I have never." or "Yes, I have.". Oops! Seems like something went wrong. Reloading might help. No, I have never. Oops! Seems like something went wrong. Reloading might help. Yes, I have. Google Duo May be Getting a Group Calling Feature

Image
Google Duo May be Getting a Group Calling Feature Posted by Evan Selleck on Dec 31, 2018 in Google , Google Duo Google Duo is one of the best video calling apps out there, and it's going to get a bit better in the (hopefully near) future. Based on a test build for Google Duo that Android Police was able to toy around with, it has been confirmed that the service will be adding a group calling feature at some point. The report, unfortunately, doesn't include any concrete information as to a planned release date. But, Duo users do have something to get excited about. Group calling is on its way. It's a bit rough in its current build, but that will change. It appears the feature will be able to host up to seven people in a single call. That's not a lot of folks, but it's certainly better than just one-on-one conversations. Currently, the feature only supports the ability to launch a group video call with a set number of individuals, and mor

What's new in January 2019 on Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Hulu

Neil Patrick Harris is Count Olaf in Netflix's "A Series of Unfortunate Events." New year, new originals for the three major streaming libraries. Streaming video is only projected to increase by something like a jillion percent in 2019. (That's a rough estimate.) And by all accounts Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and Hulu are coming out of the gate strong in January. Consider: Gear up for the third season of The Grand Tour . Can't get enough of those guys. Netflix is back with the third — and final! — season of A Series of Unfortunate Events . Maybe they'll finally find that damn sugar bowl. Season 2 of Future Man finds its way to Hulu on Jan. 11. It's never too late to go back in time to save the future of humanity. And that's just the tip of the iceberg, folks. There's something for everyone in 2019. This is just the start of it. Google is working on a fix for laggy tablet mode on Chrome OS devices including the Pixel Slate

Image
Chrome OS was originally a laptop platform, but slowly it's being reworked for tablet form factors . However, as that goes on, there have been some hiccups. Most recently, many have noted the poor performance of tablet mode especially on Chrome OS products like the Pixel Slate , but it seems a fix for that lag is incoming. The best gifts for Android users If you tuned into any hands-on or review coverage of Google's Pixel Slate, you're likely familiar with the performance issues many have described. In tablet mode, Chrome OS has a lot of issues with lag. This is especially evident in the multitasking screen, and it seems that is the first thing Google is looking at to fix these problems. ChromeUnboxed notes a recent bug tracker which reveals how Google plans to start fixing Chrome OS tablet mode lag in the multitasking screen. Somewhat hilariously, it seems a big reason for the poor frame rates in the animations on this screen actually comes

Samsung Galaxy S10: Everything we know so far [Video]

Once a faucet starts to leak, often times that tap is going to keep on leaking. That's exactly what happens with almost every major smartphone launch, including the Samsung Galaxy S10.  The downside is that there isn't a great deal of mystery surrounding product launches any longer, we tend to have a fairly good idea before a launch event is even called. But to be honest, it does result in us keeping our expectations in check. Although conversely, that doesn't stop people from having completely unrealistic expectations…the Pixel Ultra springs to mind.
