We spoke to a Waymo One customer about how robot taxis get confused by rainstorms

Image
Last month, Waymo launched its first self-driving taxi service — Waymo One — in Phoenix, Arizona, but you would hardly know it by scrolling through your feed. No Facebook posts, no live-streaming videos, no tweets. We don't know how many people are using the Google offshoot's self-driving minivans (Waymo won't say), but the ones that are have been surprisingly mute on social media. One exception is Shawn Metz, a 30-year-old HR manager who lives in Chandler, Arizona. Since he was invited to use Waymo One in December, Metz has posted at least a dozen videos on Instagram and YouTube, documenting his experience using Waymo's self-driving minivans. He's become the hero of autonomous vehicle enthusiasts on Reddit He's become the hero of AV enthusiasts on Reddit for his willingness to answer questions and post unedited videos of his rides. And Waymo, never one to pass up a marketing opportunity, has even featured a softball interview with Metz on its Mediu

Opinion: Bezel-less is not the way forward

Image
How do you imagine the phones in three years? Foldable? Bezel-less? With invisible cameras? Powered by new long-lasting batteries? I could get behind a few of those ideas, sure. But bezel-less - that can't be the way forward. While I agree that the sooner we get rid of those awful notches the better, the bezel-less dream should be put to rest, too. I know this is the unpopular opinion, but just bear with me for a while. I was once a fan of the all-screen phones myself. But having reviewed enough skinny bezel-less smartphones, I just can't imagine myself with a true bezel-less phone - it will be a disaster. Let's go back to 2016 and the Galaxy S7 edge. I was curious back then about this edge hype and indeed, what a beauty the S7 edge was. Incredible screen, impressive design, sophisticated execution. But after a couple of days as my daily driver I became bothered by phantom touches. As it turned out the phone registered my palm all the time and thus misinterpreted m

Should you spend money on Fortnite on PS4?

Image
Best answer: No, it is not worth paying $40 for the Founder's Pack just for access to its Save the World PvE mode. You should stick with the free Battle Royale version of Fortnite instead. Are Android updates getting faster? Let’s look at the data

Image
If you want the freshest version of Android as fast as possible, the Google Pixel range is clearly your best bet. Historically, other Android manufacturers have been much less reliable. Although some have been faster and more consistent with security and version updates than others. It's left consumers a little befuddled when buying devices that will see longterm support. With  Project Treble now supported by key Android flagships, in theory updates should roll out to us faster than ever before. It's now been five months since Android Pie launched — does the data confirm  Google's optimism about faster updates ? Let's look at the data The data in the graph below plots the time between an Android version's release date and the first confirmed report of an OEM rolling out the update to unlocked phones on a global scale. I looked at key devices announced well ahead of a new Android OS announcement, so we can fully assess upgrade times. This list include

The EU Copyright Directive is about to make the internet worse

Image
What you need to know about the European 'link tax' and 'upload filter' The European Union's new Copyright Directive stands to dramatically change the way we consume news and other online content. Although originally intended to ensure creators and news organizations are fairly compensated for their work, the directive will more likely make quality news harder to find, throw financial and technical roadblocks in the way of smaller online publishers and creators, stifle free speech and negatively impact internet culture. The directive is currently in the late stages of closed-door negotiations between the European Commission, European Parliament and European Council before being put to a vote of EU member nations. If passed as-is, it'll be a major change to the balance of power around online copyright. The ripples from the EU CD are likely to be felt even outside the EU's borders -- in areas as serious as major news coverage, and as silly as the m

How Samsung’s luxury flip phones paved the way for the Galaxy F

Image
Samsung Smartphones with foldable displays will hit the market in 2019 after years of speculation and anticipation. Some say these folding phones will revolutionize the stagnant mobile world. Others expect nothing more than an expensive gimmick. Whatever foldable phones will become, one thing they certainly are not, is new. In fact, Samsung has been releasing expensive folding smartphones for many years. Though they're generally sold only in China, long-time Android Authority followers will already know about Samsung's W series . These clamshell phones don't feature folding displays, but they are in many ways the precursor to the upcoming Galaxy F, and could offer a glimpse of what's to come. Samsung Unfolding the specs Samsung has been making W-series flip phones for the Chinese market since 2006, and it's a line it continues to pursue in the present day. W-branded smartphones offer high-end specs like you would find in Samsung flagship Note a
