Samsung expands its SmartThings portfolio with a camera, smart plug and a smart bulb

Image
Samsung is expanding its SmartThings portfolio in the US by introducing a camera, WiFi smart plug and a smart bulb. The new products are available to buy nationwide starting today. They work within the SmartThings ecosystem, and can be purchased though Samsung e-Store, Best Buy, and a few other retailers. All three devices work with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung's own Bixby voice assistants. Ideal for smart home beginners The new SmartThings Cam is a Full HD (1080p) 145-degree, wide-angle camera with night vision and HDR imaging. It also has object detection, which Samsung says can differentiate between people and the motion of pets or a passing vehicle. The monitoring zone can be customized to receive notifications when something moves in that specific area. The two-way audio lets you talk to a housemate, a visitor, or your pets when you're away. The SmartThings Cam comes with 24 hours of free cloud storage for up to four cameras. You can extend the storage perio

Galaxy Fit e shows up on Flipkart ahead of launch in India

Image
Samsung appears to be making preparations for the launch of the Galaxy Fit e in India. The fitness tracker now has a dedicated landing page on local online retailer Flipkart, which informs prospective customers that "The next gen of fitness is coming." The small wearable device isn't accompanied by an exact launch date, but the "Stay Tuned" banner suggests that the landing page should be populated with more information sooner rather than later. Likewise, pricing details are missing, but when the budget fitness tracker originally launched in some countries back in May, it carried a price tag of around $45. In theory, at least, this means that the product should not exceed that price range for its release in India. The Galaxy Fit e is not a bad prospect for buyers who might be looking for a budget, lightweight fitness wearable weighing in at only 15g. It tracks basic activities and has sleep tracking, while also taking advantage of a heart rate monitor. You

Galaxy A5 (2017) starts receiving the June security patch in many markets

Image
Samsung's Galaxy A5 (2017) has started receiving the June 2019 security patch in multiple markets around the world. It appears the rollout has begun last week itself and has expanded to more variants and regions since then. The 2017 midranger has been receiving updates consistently since its launch, and Samsung is keeping that record intact with the latest release. The SM-A520F variant is currently receiving the update in the Netherlands, Ukraine, Russia, Italy, Germany, Spain, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and a few other regions. The SM-A520W variant, meanwhile, is receiving the update in Canada. As of now, there doesn't seem to be any trace of the June update for the Korean variants (SM-A520L, SM-A520K, and SM-A520S) of the device. As detailed by Samsung in the June security bulletin , the June 2019 Security Maintenance Release (SMR) fixes eight critical and over a dozen high-risk vulnerabilities in the Android OS. It also includes patches for 11 Samsung Vulnerabilit

[Poll] If the Galaxy Note 10 doesn’t have a microSD slot, will you skip it?

Image
A rather unsettling rumor about the Galaxy Note 10 came up during the weekend. It claimed that the Galaxy Note 10 won't have a microSD card slot . Forget the 3.5mm headphone jack, if this turns out to be true, the criticism is bound to be deafening. The rumor claimed that it would only be the Galaxy Note 10 Pro that comes with a microSD card slot. Customers who opt for the smaller and cheaper model will have no option to externally expand the storage. Samsung has done this once before, in 2015 to be precise , but rolled back the decision merely a year later. So the question is, would you skip the Galaxy Note 10 if it does indeed come without a microSD slot? Do you think that it doesn't make much sense for a Galaxy Note flagship to ship without one? Or are you so keen on the Note series that you'd begrudgingly pay for the more expensive Galaxy Note 10 Pro just for the microSD card slot? Official confirms Galaxy Fold issues won’t affect Note 10 August debut

Image
Samsung is facing two major device releases by the end of the year. With the Galaxy Fold having been delayed from its intended April 26 release, the foldable luxury phone is getting dangerously close to the usual yearly launch window occupied by the Note series. But despite some industry rumors, Samsung is adamant in keeping the Galaxy Note 10 on schedule, regardless of how the Galaxy Fold story will unfold. "The Galaxy Note 10 will have its own timeline for its debut in August, regardless of the Galaxy Fold's launch schedule" revealed a Samsung official to the Korean media in a recent report. "The company keeps the same stance about the Galaxy Fold's schedule." In other words, the Fold's delay won't affect the launch strategy set forth for the Galaxy Note 10 series, and any plans surrounding the phablet should not have an effect on the Fold either. The official didn't mention any exact time frames in which the Galaxy Fold might be planned fo

Galaxy S10 5G sales have exceeded 1 million units in South Korea

Image
South Korea was the first country to flip the switch on mobile 5G networks. Samsung was the first to bring a 5G smartphone to the market with the Galaxy S10 5G . A new report from Samsung's home country reveals that the company has sold more than one million units of the Galaxy S10 5G so far. Samsung started selling the Galaxy S10 5G in South Korea on April 5. It has been about 80 days since the device went on sale and a million units have been sold already. It has become one of the most popular models of the Galaxy S10 series in South Korea. Galaxy S10 5G is a hit in South Korea Multiple sources from the local mobile industry reveal that an average of 15,000 Galaxy S10 5G units have been sold every single day. Customers have increasingly opted for the 5G variant since carriers are providing 5G service now. The Galaxy S10 5G accounted for 20 percent of overall sales of the Galaxy S10 series by end of April. This figure jumped up to 80 percent as of June. Carriers tend to he

Galaxy A10s to sport fingerprint scanner and a dual camera

Image
More information surrounding the upcoming Galaxy A10s has popped up over the weekend through a series of FCC documents. The papers pertain to the model number SM-A107F and reveal the smartphone's overall dimensions along with several other features. They offer a glimpse at the rear panel's design, which suggests that the device should now be equipped with a fingerprint sensor and possibly even two main cameras. More features, bigger battery, and a dual camera? While the ongoing Galaxy A10 is the only device in the mid-range series to lack a fingerprint sensor, this characteristic is bound to change with the release of the upgraded model. The sketches depicting the FCC label show a clear cut-out for a rear fingerprint scanner mounted in the center. Likewise, they indicate that the LED flash will no longer be contained within the rear camera cutout. More interestingly, the camera cutout itself has retained the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners, which strongly hint

Galaxy S8 receiving the June 2019 security patch now

Image
We're in the final week of this month and many of Samsung's devices are just now receiving the latest security patch for this month. It's the Galaxy S8's turn today. Samsung has started rolling out the June 2019 security patch for the Galaxy S8. Samsung has rolled out the latest security maintenance release for quite a few of its devices recently. The Galaxy Note 8 has got it and so have several mid-range and premium mid-range devices. The Galaxy S10 series got it late last week . Galaxy S8 June 2019 security patch rolling out Samsung is now rolling out firmware version G950FXXS5DSF1 for the Galaxy S8. It has been released in Greece, Germany, Italy, Spain, Luxembourg, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Nordic countries so far. The firmware can also be downloaded right away from our database . The June 2019 security patch had been detailed at the beginning of the month. Samsung confirmed that it features fixes for eight critical Android OS vul

T-Mobile and Verizon rolling out Galaxy Note 8 June security update

Image
The Galaxy Note 8 is being treated to the June 2019 security update by Verizon and T-Mobile. The device is getting software version N950USQS5DSF5 and  N950USQS5DSF6 on T-Mobile and Verizon respectively, and the update only has the new security enhancements going by the rather generic changelog posted by both carriers. And with the Galaxy Note 8 having received two major OS upgrades, it's most likely going to get only basic security updates for the rest of its support cycle. The June 2019 security patch brings fixes for eight critical vulnerabilities in the Android OS in addition to over a dozen high-risk vulnerabilities. The most severe critical security vulnerability could have allowed a remote attacker to use a special file to run arbitrary code on a device in the context of a privileged process. 11 serious vulnerabilities discovered in Samsung's software have been fixed as well, including one that could result in users downloading an infected app from the Galaxy St

Galaxy S10 June security update adds QR code scanning to camera app

Image
The Galaxy S10 lineup started receiving an update with the June 2019 security patch in Hong Kong and China (where the Snapdragon model is sold) a few days ago , and Samsung has now released the update for the international Exynos model, with the rollout kicking off in Switzerland today. And as we had been expecting, the newest Galaxy S10 update adds a QR code scanner to the camera app. When the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 received an update with a dedicated camera Night mode like the Galaxy S10, it was discovered that they also gained a new camera feature that wasn't available on the Galaxy S10 trio: the ability to scan QR codes by simply pointing the camera at one. The feature has now arrived for the Galaxy S10 lineup as part of the June security update. If you own a Galaxy S10e, S10, and S10+, you will no longer need to download a third-party app or use Bixby Vision to scan QR codes. No other new features on board You will also find a quick toggle for the QR scanner in

Rumor: Galaxy Note 10 may not have a microSD slot, either

Image
As if all the conflicting reports on whether the Galaxy Note 10 will have a headphone jack or not weren't enough, a new rumor is now complicating things even further. XDA Developers writer Max Weinbach took to Twitter to list out a few things he learned from one of his sources who apparently managed to play with the Note 10 and the Note 10 Pro, and one of the points on that list says that the regular Galaxy Note 10 has no microSD slot. Expandable storage to become a 'Pro' feature? Yes, you read that right: The non-Pro Galaxy Note 10 might not have expandable storage . According to Weinbach's source, there's no headphone jack on either the regular or Pro models. Samsung reportedly " added a fake headphone jack to the unit to trick people ," whatever that means, and the regular Note 10 also lacks a microSD slot. Now, it's entirely possible that this information is based on prototype models that may not be the actual product that Samsung will put

Galaxy Note 9 update with camera Night mode rolling out in more markets

Image
Samsung has expanded availability of the latest Galaxy Note 9 update to more markets following its initial release in Germany earlier this week . The latest Note 9 update is a notable one: It brings a dedicated Night mode to the camera in addition to security fixes included in the June 2019 security patch. A dedicated Night mode was first introduced on the Galaxy S10 lineup and then released for the Galaxy S9, and it has now made its way to the Note 9 in various countries. The update adds Night mode and a QR code scanner to the camera Night mode on the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 works almost as well as it does on the Galaxy S10 ; in fact, the older flagships can even produce more pleasing photos at times, as we noticed when we compared the Galaxy S9's Night mode to the Galaxy S10's . The Galaxy S9 and Note 9 also get another new camera feature that isn't available on the Galaxy S10 yet: Both phones can scan QR codes with the camera app , removing the need to use Bixb

New ToF camera manufacturing plant built to meet Samsung’s demand

Image
In anticipation of high demand from Samsung, South Korean camera module manufacturer MCNEX is reportedly expanding its business with the construction of a new plant in Vietnam. With a focus on manufacturing ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensors, the new plant will serve Samsung in bringing this technology in the hands of more customers later this year. The camera manufacturer has reportedly made a 13 billion won ($11.2 million) investment in the new plant and expects mass production of ToF sensors to commence in August-September. The report from South Korea mentions that the ToF modules soon-to-be manufactured by MCNEX will be employed by the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 . But MCNEX might not be the only company involved with supplying ToF cameras for the upcoming phablet or other  future smartphone models . Earlier this year, Samsung introduced its first smartphone equipped with a ToF sensor. Two of them, in fact. Both the front and rear-facing ToF cameras featured on the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G

Samsung Galaxy A90 might have 45W fast charging

Image
The Samsung Galaxy A90 , which is reportedly being tested in South Korea, might take advantage of 45W fast charging. This would push the OEM's fast charging barrier considerably further, nearly doubling the existing 25W upper-limit found on several Samsung handsets including the Galaxy S10 5G , Galaxy A70, and Galaxy A80. This is according to a recent tweet from prolific leakster Ice Universe, who claims that the same feature will also be present on the Galaxy Note 10 Pro. This information is a bit conflicting, but more on that below. Samsung to test 45W fast charging on A series before the Note 10 arrives? Several Samsung smartphones now take advantage of 25W fast charging. The company first announced the technology alongside the Galaxy S10 5G, but the flagship was not the first Samsung device to bring it to the public. Instead, 25W fast charging debuted on the Galaxy A70. In light of this recent rumor, it could be argued that Samsung might repeat history and introduce 4

Customers can buy the Galaxy S10 5G from Sprint starting today

Image
It was confirmed last week that Sprint customers will soon be able to purchase the Galaxy S10 5G as well. The 5G variant of Samsung's flagship was exclusively launched with Verizon in the United States. It has remained exclusive to Big Red for about a month. Samsung did confirm when this handset was announced that it would be available from other carriers as well. AT&T is only offering it to its business customers and developers for now . Sprint is making it available to customers in markets where its 5G mobile network is live. Sprint Galaxy S10 5G goes on sale Sprint's mobile 5G network is currently available in four markets – Atlanta, Dallas, Houston and Kansas City. Customers there can now buy the Galaxy S10 5G from the carrier's retail stores and through its website. The carrier will be launching 5G in parts of Los Angeles, Chicago, Phoenix, New York City, and Washington, D.C. in the coming weeks. Customers who lease the handset from Sprint stand to save $

Samsung Galaxy M30s specs revealed in benchmark

Image
About a week ago we brought to light that Samsung is developing a new variant of the Galaxy M30  with the model number SM-M307F. The model number suggests that it could be branded as the Galaxy M30s. Now, some of this variant's specs have been revealed after it made an early entry in the database of the online benchmarking tool Geekbench. Better chipset, newer software out of the gate Like the Galaxy M30, the newer model will apparently feature 4GB of RAM, or at the very least, one of its variants will. The existing phone was made available with two RAM configurations (4GB and 6GB), so there is a high probability that Samsung will treat the sequel in a similar manner. Unlike the ongoing model, however, the SM-M307F seems to be planned for release running Android 9 Pie right out of the box. The Galaxy M30 ran Android 8.1 Oreo at launch and it only received One UI several weeks ago when the base software was updated to Android 9 Pie. Judging by the Geekbench listing, the SM-M3

Samsung asks Apple to pay penalty for not buying enough iPhone displays

Image
Samsung essentially has a monopoly in the mobile OLED panel market. This is why Apple had no choice but to source panels from Samsung Display when it introduced the iPhone X, its first smartphone with an OLED display. Samsung was expected to make billions as a result of this deal . Reports suggested that it would supply Apple with 50 million panels in 2017 before ramping it up to almost 200 million panels in 2018. A report out of South Korea claims that Apple committed to a minimum order quantity when it agreed to source OLED panels from Samsung. Weaker iPhone sales than expected have prevented the company from reaching the target. Samsung Display now wants Apple to pay a penalty for missing its minimum order quantity. It has been reported multiple times that Apple has cut iPhone X display panel orders from Samsung. Apple reportedly fails to meet minimum order quantity Samsung was quite hopeful that the demand for its mobile OLED panels could continue to rise. It planned to bui
