Unlocked Galaxy Note 8 updated with November security patch in the US

Image
The unlocked Galaxy Note 8 is now receiving an update with the November 2019 security patch in the US, a week after the November update was released for the unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the country and two weeks after it hit the global Exynos-powered Galaxy Note 8 . The new update includes only the latest security fixes and comes with software version  N950U1UES7DSK1.  Some carriers are also likely to release the November update for the Galaxy Note 8 in the next couple of days, considering how important the update is. It fixes a vulnerability in the Android OS that allows malicious apps to access a device's camera without the user's consent and access their photos and videos. There have been no reports of this vulnerability being actively exploited, and now that it has been fixed, it should no longer be a concern. The November patch also fixes a slew of other vulnerabilities, which you can read about here . For getting the update over the air directly on your phon

Galaxy S10 Lite: Everything we know about the Galaxy S10 spin-off

Image
Samsung changed its Galaxy S lineup in 2019 by launching four distinct models (Galaxy S10e/S10/S10+/S10 5G), as opposed to the usual two in recent years. Combined with the Galaxy Note 10 series, the company's 2019 flagship lineup appears crowded with too many models with very little differentiation. However, Samsung seems to think there is still room for more flagship or near-flagship offerings, as evident from the impending launch of the Galaxy S10 Lite and Note 10 Lite. The Galaxy S10 Lite , which goes by the model number SM-G770F, is supposed to be a weaker and cheaper Galaxy S10, but there is already the Galaxy S10e taking that spot. It is, therefore, not clear what Samsung's rationale is behind the upcoming device. Moreover, the Galaxy S11 launch is not that far off , so why is the company still fiddling with a soon-to-be old flagship lineup? We don't have any answers and have to wait for Samsung's pitch during the announcement to know more. Until then, let&#

AT&T taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G

Image
AT&T has started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G. AT&T will be making its 5G services available to the public later this year after a few months of providing them to business customers, and the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G will be the carrier's first 5G-enabled phone . Pre-orders will be delivered by December 17, which means there's a three-week wait for anyone interested in getting the Note 10+ 5G on AT&T's network. Until now, the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G was a Verizon exclusive in North America. AT&T's pricing for the Galaxy Note 10+ 5G is the same as the pricing on Verizon, with the 256GB base variant costing $1,299.99 and the 512GB variant pricing at $1,399.99. The carrier is also offering installment plans on the AT&T Next program: $43.34 and $46.67 monthly for the 256GB and 512GB variants respectively. Furthermore, those who port-in to AT&T and trade-in an eligible device can get up to $950 in bill credits, while those who add a new line

Galaxy Note 9 Android 10 hotfix beta update released in Korea

Image
The Galaxy Note 9's One UI 2.0 beta program kicked off last week, and Samsung has now released a hotfix update for the phone in Korea and the UK to fix two seemingly critical bugs. We say seemingly because the translation from Korean to English isn't great, but it looks like one of those bugs is similar to one that wreaked havoc on the Galaxy S10 series. The bug in question caused devices to stop accepting the PIN, password or pattern , leaving a factory reset as the only solution. The Galaxy Note 9's hotfix beta update changelog says "Unlocking after reboot" under the list of bug fixes, and we can only assume that it's the same issue as the one that Samsung had to fix on the Galaxy S10. The translation for the other bug fix is "Unintended issue of installing the app", and we have no clue what that means, but it's likely to be important as hotfix updates don't usually include fixes for minor issues. It remains to be seen when — and if — S

Exynos-powered Galaxy S8 gets November security update

Image
Samsung started rolling out the November security update for its devices before the month even started, but the rollout of the update is far from over and the company continues to bring it to more and more Galaxy devices as we approach December. Over the last week, Samsung released the November update for the Snapdragon variants of the Galaxy S8 and S8+ in the US , and it has now released the update for the global Exynos-powered models as well. Over in Mexico, a new update, carrying software version  G950FXXS6DSK7 and  G955FXXS6DSK7 for the S8 and S8+ respectively, is rolling out, and we should soon see it making its way to other markets as well. The update includes only the latest security fixes; no new features are on board, and unless Samsung actually  ends up updating the Galaxy S8 to Android 10 , the 2017 flagship will only be receiving security updates for the rest of its support cycle. You can download the update on your Galaxy S8 or S8+ over the air by opening the phone

Stable Galaxy S10 and Note 10 Android 10 update coming in January?

Image
Every year, Samsung posts a roadmap for when it expects individual Galaxy devices to get the update to the next version of Android. Samsung Israel has published the roadmap for the Android 10 update on the Samsung Members app, and, well, it says that the stable Android 10 update will not make its way to any Galaxy phone or tablet before January 2020. Yes, that includes the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10. Galaxy S10, Note 10, and Note 9 in January, Galaxy S9 in April The Galaxy S10, Galaxy Note 10, and Galaxy Note 9 will get the update in January, according to Samsung Israel, while the Galaxy S9 is scheduled to be updated much later in April. Now, it's entirely possible that these are just early estimates that could change later.  Google revealed earlier this year that Samsung has promised to update some of its devices to Android 10 before 2020, and with the Galaxy S10 One UI 2.0 beta program progressing so quickly , it's a bit doubtful that Samsung will not be able to relea

Samsung awarded for environmental sustainability of its semiconductor products

Image
Samsung Electronics' 512GB eUFS 3.0 solution has become the first mobile memory in the industry to be awarded the Carbon Footprint and Water Footprint Certifications from Carbon Trust, an independent, UK-based non-profit organization that's on a mission to push various industries into sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and water usage throughout the production cycle. Samsung's eUFS 3.0 solution is inherently more sustainable One of the greater advantages of Samsung's fifth-gen V-NAND memory technology is that it allows eUFS 3.0 storage to be more power-efficient while boasting twice the capacity of eUFS 2.1 based on fourth-gen V-NAND. By using a unique etching technology, Samsung can create chips that are 25% smaller and pack nearly two times more stacked layers compared to fourth-gen V-NAND. The benefits of this technology, however, are not limited to better performance. The manufacturing process of each fifth-gen V-NAND cell layer requires fewer resour

Galaxy S11 series could adopt laser auto-focus for the main cameras

Image
To nobody's surprise, the Galaxy S11 series has become a hot topic of conversation fueled by leaks and rumors. The recent unofficial CAD renders depicting the alleged Galaxy S11e and Galaxy S11 have led to a few speculations, one of which pertains to the main camera setup and the possibility that the Galaxy S11 flagship lineup could make use of laser auto-focus technology. As usual, some educated guesses can be made as to what the future lineup will have in store for Galaxy fans, but other aspects remain unclear or shrouded in complete mystery. As far as laser auto-focus is concerned, this isn't a groundbreaking or new technology so it's not so outlandish to consider the possibility that Samsung will adopt it. Then again, unofficial CAD renders are the basis of this rumor so it remains open for debate. Rumors point at laser auto-focus, which could mean the end of PDAF? Laser auto-focus was first employed by the LG G3 more than four years ago but was abandoned by th

Show your love of Star Trek on your Samsung phone with these fresh themes and stamps

Image
Samsung has embraced the Star Wars universe in its own way, first by launching an ad to promote its Galaxy ecosystem along with Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker , and then by announcing a full-fledged Galaxy Note 10+ Star Wars Special Edition . Now, if you're a fan of both Samsung and Star Trek then you might feel a bit left out in light of these events. But fret not, there are still plenty of ways for you to show your love of the Star Trek universe using official smartwatch and smartphone themes, icon packs, Always on Displays, and even stamps for your photos and videos. Samsung’s SSDs could be employed by the next-gen Sony PS5 console

Image
Over the past month or so, there's been a lot of buzz surrounding Sony's upcoming PlayStation 5 next-gen console, particularly in regards to storage mediums and how SSDs will improve the next generation. What does this have to do with Samsung, you may ask? Well, it turns out that Samsung might be Sony's SSD supplier for the PS5. The Korean tech giant hosted the Samsung SSD Forum 2019 in Tokyo last week. At the event, the company reportedly confirmed that it is working on a new NVMe SSD solution which should be the perfect fit for gaming consoles. Although the Sony PS5 wasn't outright mentioned on stage, Samsung did show a slide depicting the PS4 along with the caption SSD is required for proper game play . Now, it could be that Samsung aims to bag both Sony and Microsoft as its SSD customers, but the presence of the PS4 in the aforementioned slide has fueled the idea that at least the Sony PS5 will be taking advantage of this technology once it launches next year.

[Poll] Would you buy a mid-range Galaxy phone for the S Pen?

Image
When the Galaxy Note series first debuted back in 2011, it was supposed to offer two attractions that you couldn't find on any other smartphone, Galaxy-branded or otherwise: a big screen, and the S Pen stylus. Over the years, big screens have become quite mainstream, but the S Pen has remained unmatched and is currently the only feature that truly differentiates Samsung's Galaxy Note lineup. While Samsung has been making mid-range tablets that support the S Pen, the stylus has not been seen on any Galaxy smartphone other than a Galaxy Note flagship, except for the Galaxy Note 3 Neo that was launched in 2014. Now, Samsung is working on a device called the Galaxy Note 10 Lite, which could possibly be a upper mid-range device that's bundled with the S Pen. And, recently, we speculated that the S Pen may end up coming to the Galaxy A series as well, after discovering a mysterious new Samsung device that doesn't fit any of the company's current smartphone lineups .

T-Mobile Galaxy S8 November security update released

Image
Late last week, the November 2019 security patch was released for the unlocked Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the US. Today, T-Mobile is rolling out the latest security update to the Galaxy S8 and S8+ on its network, becoming the first carrier to do so. The November security update for the Galaxy S8/S8+ comes a little over a week after T-Mobile's previous update for the device , which brought improvements to RCS messaging. The November update for Galaxy devices brings fixes for two critical vulnerabilities. One of those allows unauthorized access to a phone's photos and videos and its camera to malicious apps, while the other allows full control of a device by taking advantage of an exploit within the Chrome web browser . Both vulnerabilities affect Android devices from other manufacturers as well and are not exclusive to Samsung phones and tablets. T-Mobile's November update for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ is currently available via our firmware database ( S8 | S8+ ). It do

Galaxy S11 5G benchmark reveals Exynos 990, 12GB of RAM

Image
The first Galaxy S11 benchmark has showed up on Geekbench . The SM-G986B, which will be the 5G variant of the Galaxy S11, popped up on Geekbench earlier today, and the benchmark listing reveals that the phone will have the Exynos 990 SoC under the hood and 12GB of RAM. The S11 will run Android 10 out of the box, as expected. It's interesting to see that the middle of the three Galaxy S11 models will have 12GB of RAM. Only the Galaxy S10+ was offered with 12GB of RAM (on the 1TB storage variant), but with the Galaxy Note 10+ having 12GB RAM on all storage variants, we guess we shouldn't be too surprised that 12 gigs of RAM won't be exclusive to the Plus model of Samsung's 2020 flagship. Will 12GB RAM be standard across all Galaxy S11 storage variants? It's important to note that the Geekbench listing is for the Galaxy S11 5G and there is no guarantee that the LTE model will also have 12GB of RAM. According to our sources, the LTE and 5G models are not the sam

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 picks up new update

Image
The Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active received a major new update last week and picked up many of the new features that were introduced on the Galaxy Watch Active 2 , and the Watch Active 2 is now getting an update as well, although it's a pretty minor release. Available in South Korea, Germany, and a few other markets at this time, the new update fixes a bug that randomly disabled Watch Always On mode and improves accuracy of calorie measurement using the heart rate sensor. The update also improves general stability for Bixby features and is rolling out to both the 44mm and 40mm Galaxy Watch Active 2 variants. Like all other updates, you can download this one by opening the Galaxy Wearable app on your connected phone, selecting  Watch software update , then tapping  Download and install . It may not be available in your country right away, so you might have to check again later. Your phone will also notify you automatically once the update becomes available. Galaxy W
