Samsung Health update adds menstrual cycle tracking and calendar

Image
It's been a week since Samsung Health was updated with Dark Mode support , and now Samsung is rolling out a new update for the app, pushing it to version 6.9.0.055 and introducing a new Women's health category that lets you track your menstrual cycle. This might be a most-welcomed addition to Samsung Health because, as it turns out, most third-party apps designed to track menstrual cycles are either locked behind a paywall or they are of poor execution. With the latest update to Samsung Health, this should no longer be as big of an issue, as the app now includes a dedicated menstrual cycle calendar. The official changelog also mentions Dark Mode, but as we've explained, this feature was added last week. Likewise, the changelog states that 'various bug fixes and improvements have been applied,' but it doesn't go into detail as to what exactly they entail. As usual, you can try to update Samsung Health via the Galaxy Store or Play Store, or you can visit ou

Samsung and Galaxy Note 10 dominate South Korean market in Q4 2019

Image
Samsung was the top smartphone vendor in South Korea throughout the fourth quarter of 2019, however, the company's top spot was somewhat threatened by Apple's increased influence in the domestic market. Samsung managed to retain first place with a 57% market share, but although the company held the majority stake, its market share has dropped by 14% compared to Q3 2019. At the same time, Apple held the second spot on the podium with a 28% market share, and its influence has increased by 17% from a quarter earlier. According to The Korea Herald citing Counterpoint Research , Apple's positive performance was attributed to strong iPhone 11 sales. Nevertheless, 7 out of the 10 best-selling smartphones in South Korea throughout Q4 2019 were made by Samsung. The Galaxy Note 10+ 5G was apparently the most sought-after device in the three-month period, and it was even more popular than the iPhone 11 which took second place ahead of the standard Galaxy Note 10 5G. LG was th

Samsung already working on Android 11 as Galaxy S10+ visits Geekbench

Image
Google took the veil off the first developer preview of Android 11 earlier this month, and it looks like Samsung is already testing the new software on the Galaxy S10+ . At least according to a recent entry in the Geekbench database, revealing the Galaxy S10+, model number SM-G975F, running Android R . The next version of Google's mobile OS will likely be officially known as Android 11, but for now, the developer preview follows Google's alphabetical naming convention and is being referred to as Android R. The Geekbench entry doesn't reveal any unusual details about the OS, evidently, nor does it suggest when the final OS version will be ready for a public release. But assuming that the database entry is legitimate, what it tells us is that Samsung was very quick to pick up the first developer preview and test it on its hardware. This could translate into a timely Android 11 roll-out towards the end of the year, not necessarily for the Galaxy S10+ but for one of Samsun

Samsung starts providing next-gen 5G baseband units to carriers

Image
Samsung has announced that it has started offering its next-generation baseband unit (BBU) to network carriers. The CDU50 offers six times greater capacity and flexibility in the network deployment. The company's solution has already been deployed in Korea, and it will be launched in the US and other markets in the second quarter of the year. The South Korean firm's cellular baseband solution supports both LTE and 5G NR (New Radio) network frequencies via a single unit, which makes it easier for carriers to deploy their networks. The new baseband unit supports both CRAN (Centralized Radio Access Network) and DRAN (Distributed Radio Access Network) configurations. Thanks to its new 5G modem, Samsung's CDU50 can offer up to six times more cells and up to two times faster network throughput. It can also help operators in a smooth transition from 4G to 5G networks when the time comes. All of this is done at reduced costs and space compared to the company's previous-gen

Samsung starts mass-producing 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM chips using 10nm tech

Image
Samsung has announced that it has started mass-producing 16GB LPDDR5 DRAM chips for mobile devices. The South Korean chip giant is the first in the world to make such DRAM chips, and they are already being used in the recently announced Galaxy S20 Ultra . The company will start supplying these chips to other brands who would use them in high-end smartphones and tablets. Samsung says that such high-capacity memory chips are essential in providing graphically-rich games and smart photography. Samsung's newest 16GB RAM chips are fabricated using its second-generation 10nm lithography process. They consist of eight 12Gb chips and four 8Gb chips. The data transfer rate is being pegged at 5.5Gbps, which is approximately 1.3 times faster than LPDDRX chips. The power consumption is up to 20% lower power compared to 8GB LPDDR4X chips. The South Korean electronics giant is producing its newest DRAMP chips at its Pyeongtaek facility in its homeland. It will also start producing 16GB LP

Second Galaxy Z Flip batch for Canada arrives on February 28

Image
The Galaxy Z Flip went on sale in Canada last Friday and, unsurprisingly given the phone's launch in other markets, it sold out on the first day of availability. Samsung Canada has now announced that a new batch is scheduled to arrive next Friday, February 28. In case you have yet to place an order for the Galaxy Z Flip then you might be out of luck and miss the next window of availability as well. Samsung Canada revealed that purchases continue to be processed for the next product allotment  which might mean that the company has a fairly large backlog of orders that have to be prioritized accordingly. Samsung hasn't revealed any exact numbers. We don't know how many Galaxy Z Flip units have been sold and ordered in the country so far, and it's unclear how large the next batch will be. For the time being, availability for the Galaxy Z Flip remains limited across the world, and this has nothing to do with any disruptions caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Simply

Areas we’d like to see improved with the Galaxy Fold 2

Image
The original Galaxy Fold is very likely to get a sequel later this year, and it goes without saying that, with the launch of the Galaxy Fold 2, Samsung will strive to improve upon the original concept in various ways. Most of our readers are probably aware that several members of our team have been using the Galaxy Fold as their daily driver for the past half a year. We've spent enough time with the device to form a pretty good idea on what we'd like to see changed and/or improved with the next model. From the overall design to the user experience, Samsung can make the Galaxy Fold better in a lot of ways, but here's what we think the company's primary focus should be. Better software support We're getting this out of the way first. Overall, the Galaxy Fold software experience is fairly solid, but support isn't . For a luxury device that costs around $2,000 or more in some markets, Samsung has done a very poor job in terms of software support. Numerous Gal

Android Studio 3.6

Image
Posted by Scott Swarthout, Product Manager We are excited to announce the stable release of Android Studio 3.6 with a targeted set of features addressing quality in primarily code editing and debugging use cases. This is our first release after the end of Project Marble , which was focused on making the fundamental features and flows of the Integrated Development Environment (IDE) rock-solid. We learned a lot from Project Marble and in Android Studio 3.6 we introduce a small set of features, polished existing features, and spent a notable effort addressing bugs and improving underlying performance to ensure we meet the high quality bar we set in the past year. Some highlights of Android Studio 3.6 include a new way to quickly design, develop and preview app layouts using XML, with a new Split View in the design editors. Additionally, you no longer have to manually type in GPS coordinates to test location with your app because we now embedded Google Maps right into the Android Em
