LG Bringing webOS To Vehicles, Robots, Smart Home Gadgets – IFA 2018

LG Electronics is looking to expand its webOS beyond smart television sets and bring it to more platforms, including other automated consumer electronics, as well as robots and vehicles. The company announced its latest project on Friday as part of its IFA 2018 appearance, having confirmed it partnered with Luxoft Holding on the endeavor. The specifics of Luxoft's role in the effort are yet to be disclosed, though the company boasts of a lengthy track record of custom software deployment, with that expertise presumably being one of the main reasons why the South Korean firm decided to enlist its help.

To date, LG pre-installed webOS on over 60 million of its own smart television sets and digital signage, with the latter product category being a diversification avenue that the manufacturer is adamant to continue exploring moving forward. Whether Luxoft ends up assisting it with TV and signage display deployment remains to be seen but such a collaboration hasn't been mentioned by either company so far. LG and Luxoft are expected to first prioritize automotive deployment before looking at other segments which could benefit from the former's operating system, as revealed by their Friday announcement.

It's presently unclear how webOS will be modified to accommodate a digital cockpit environment, though the design aspect of its development is still likely to be LG's sole responsibility. Once the OS starts rolling out to new smart home products, LG's own offerings are likely to take precedence. The jointly developed solution will also be offered to third parties as a scalable AI-infused ecosystem for the next generation of connected solutions, as suggested by the wording of the duo's announcement. The move marks yet another step in LG's diversification efforts that allowed it to record unprecedented growth in recent times even as its mobile unit continues to struggle on a global scale.
