The upcoming OnePlus TV will sport a Samsung QLED panel

Chinese phone maker OnePlus is all set to enter the TV market, and its first TV will feature a Samsung-made display. The company took to Twitter to announce that the upcoming OnePlus TV will sport a 55-inch QLED display panel. And since Samsung is the only manufacturer producing QLED panels for TVs, that's an easy guess.

Unlike TV offerings from other Chinese makers, the OnePlus TV will run a custom version of Android TV. The TV will make its debut in India later this year.

A potential Samsung rival

OnePlus arrived in India in 2014 and has quickly established itself as one of the top players in the world's second-largest smartphone market. The Chinese company is Samsung's biggest rival in the premium smartphone segment in the country. OnePlus is now looking to tap into India's growing TV market and is once again targeting the premium segment. Samsung currently has more than 50% market share in the premium TV segment worldwide.

"In terms of pricing, we want to benchmark against the most premium products available in the market, which means we are benchmarking against Samsung and Sony," OnePlus CEO Pete Lau told Gadgets360. "Because of the strategic partnership with Amazon, our price may be slightly cheaper than their products, but it won't be half the price," he added.

A QLED Android TV at a relatively cheaper price than the competition makes a compelling offering. Samsung's surely got more competition in India. An overhaul of its TV portfolio might be needed soon, just like it did with smartphones earlier this year.

Samsung Display remains the leader in global display market

The latest data from IHS Markit shows that Samsung Display has retained its dominant position as the top global smartphone display vendor in the first quarter of this year. It was able to do that as more smartphone manufacturers opted for OLED panels for their premium devices. Samsung picked up the bulk of those orders. Samsung's display affiliate is estimated to have shipped $3.4 billion worth of smartphone displays in the first quarter ending March 2019. It accounted for 40.2 percent of the smartphone display market in this period. Samsung Display also accounted for 80 percent of OLED panel supplies. ARCore apps are now available for the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China

Google's ARCore apps can now run on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in China. The apps are available in the Xiaomi App Store through a partnership with Google. A tweet from the Google AR & VR Twitter account announced the news today, although the exact ARCore apps that are now compatible with the Mi Mix 2S were not named. Google did say in the tweet that more partners for ARCore are coming soon. The Mi Mix 2S is the first phone from the manufacturer to support ARCore. Some OnePlus 6Ts have an issue with waves of static on the display

Based on a handful of reports on the OnePlus product forums, some 6T owners have run into a problem with their phone's display in which a pixelated sort of "wave" or pulse of bright colors travels up or down the screen. A reliable trigger can't seem to be found, but for those that are affected, it appears to happen more often on the lock screen while using either OnePlus' face recognition or the in-display fingerprint sensor to unlock the phone.
