Samsung heir sentenced to five years in jail

Image
The Seoul Central District Court has found Lee Jae-yong, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, guilty of bribery, embezzlement and perjury, amid accusations that the presumed air to the Samsung empire was offering bribes to former South Korean president Park Geun-hye. Lee was sentenced to spend a total of five years in a county prison. It’s unclear whether the charge will ruin Lee’s chances of succeeding his father, Lee Kun-hee. We doubt it, though. After all, as The Verge rightfully pointed out, the elder Lee was previously convicted of bribery and tax evasion, only to later be pardoned on both counts. Developing…

Galaxy S5 updated with this month’s security patch

Image
In a surprise move, Samsung has rolled out this month’s security maintenance update for the Galaxy S5 in Europe. As well as the usual slew of bug fixes, the upgrade transports patches for 50 vulnerabilities in the Android OS and 12 in the firm’s software. We’re shocked that Samsung is continuing to distribute updates for the three-year-old Galaxy S5. Typically, the stops actively updating its—budget-friendly and former flagship—smartphones after their second birthday, as per its official two-year support period. If you own a Galaxy S5 and would like to check to see if the update is ready for your handset, open up Settings , select Software Update , then tap Download Updates Manually . Alternatively, you can wait until you receive an alert prompting you to install the OTA, but it could take a little longer to arrive.

S Health updated with support for the upcoming Gear Sport

Image
Samsung has updated its S Health application with support for the Gear Sport (SM-R600). It’s worth mentioning, however, that the changelog doesn’t specifically mention the upcoming wearable, but it does refer to the various swim-tracking modes it’s set to introduce. Information surrounding the Gear Sport is sparse. All we know for certain is that it’s going to be powered by Tizen 3.0 and bundle a whole host of technical health-monitoring features, as well as updated internals, including a waterproof build and more accurate heart rate monitor. Related:  Gear Sport, Samsung’s new smartwatch, leaked In addition to support for the Gear Sport , the upgrade reportedly transports a more extensive collection of health content for India—but we’re still yet to find anything new. The usual plethora of bug fixes, stability improvements and speed optimizations are also included. Samsung is expected to take the wraps off the Gear Sport at IFA in September.

Samsung heir jailed on corruption charges

Image
Samsung heir jailed on corruption charges August 25, 2017 By Siddhanth Leave a Comment Samsung heir, J Y Lee (Lee Jae-yong) who was arrested earlier this year, has now been convicted on charges of corruption. The de-facto head and Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman has been handed five years of jail time for bribery, embezzlement and hiding assets overseas. Although Lee’s lawyers have confirmed that they’ll appeal Seoul court’s decision, the ruling is seen as an important one as this is the first time, a business leader in South Korea has been convicted for five years. Also, the decision could have an impact on ex-president GH Park’s trial who was thrown out of office for the same charges. Park has been accused of supporting approval for the merger of two Samsung affiliates for a tighter control on Samsung. Meanwhile, another Samsung executive — who was also Lee’s mentor — has been convicted of his role in the same corruption scandal and will face four years in jail. The arres

Galaxy J7 could receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update

Image
It’s starting to look like the first-generation Galaxy J7 will receive the much-anticipated Android 7.0 update after all. The handset has been spotted on the Wi-Fi Alliance’s database running a build of Nougat, so it’s safe to assume that Samsung is planning on distributing the upgrade in the near future. There’s no word on whether the update is on the cards for the original Galaxy J5 , but we’re guessing it is. After all, both the Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 were announced—and released—at the same time, and they’re both capable of running the firmware without any hassle, leading us to believe that it will receive the upgrade. For those unaware, Android 7.0 Nougat bundles a plethora of new features, including enhanced notifications, improved application permissions, new emoji and refined battery saving tools, as well as a truckload of much-needed bug fixes, stability improvements, and speed optimizations. Samsung’s New Q-series LED Linear Modules Offer Superior Efficacy to Improve Premium Indoor Lighting

Samsung Electronics, a world leader in advanced digital component solutions, today announced the launch of the “Q-series,” a new line-up of LED linear modules for use in premium indoor luminaire applications where an exceptionally high level of light efficacy* is required.   The Q-series features 200 lumens per watt (lm/W) of light efficacy, which is the highest efficacy level among current LED linear modules. The Q-series’ performance levels are ideally suited to meet DLC** Premium technical standards, which require higher efficacy and lumen maintenance specifications than the DLC Standard classification.     The new Q-series modules come in one-, two- and four-foot si

Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) user manual confirms Bixby

Image
We’ve been reporting on the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) for a while now. Samsung has the successor to the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 in the pipeline . Last week we spotted this tablet at TENAA which suggests that it will be launched in China as well. The Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) is going to be an entry-level affair. It’s going to feature a 1.4GHz Snapdragon 427 processor with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It will also have an 8-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front camera. The Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017)’s user manual has now appeared online. It confirms that the tablet will ship with Bixby. However, it will only get Bixby Home and not Bixby Voice. Bixby Home is the contextual card-bas

Gear Sport, Samsung’s new smartwatch, leaked

Image
Samsung confirmed during its Galaxy Note 8 event yesterday that it’s going to launch a new Gear smartwatch at IFA 2017 in Berlin next week. The company has provided no further details about the new wearable device as yet. Over the past few weeks, it has consistently been rumored that Samsung is working on a new wearable device . The Gear Sport bears model number SM-R600. It received its Wi-Fi certification earlier this month and was later spotted at the FCC as well. The certification documents have revealed that the Gear Sport is going to be powered by Tizen 3.0. It’s going to be the first wearable device from Samsung to be powered by the Tizen 3.0 platform out of the box. They’ve also revealed that the Gear Sport supports Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct for data transfer. The Gear Sport’s features and specifications haven’t surfaced online as yet. We won’t have to wait too long to find that out as IFA 2017 is just around the corner. Samsung will confirm all of the details about this dev

How the Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera sets new standards for mobile photography

Image
The Galaxy Note 8 is Samsung’s first flagship smartphone to feature a dual camera . There are two 12-megapixel cameras on the back with a wide-angle and telephoto lens each. The Galaxy Note 8 is also the first smartphone in the world to offer Optical Image Stabilization on both rear cameras. The Galaxy Note 8’s dual camera supports 2x optical and up to 10x digital zoom. It is capable of taking crisp and clear photos even from far distances and in low lighting conditions. Samsung has also introduced new camera modes to give users more creative control over their images. One of the rear cameras works like any other smartphone camera. It captures color images in typical fashion. It’s the second camera that adds elements which can’t be captured by the primary camera. The Galaxy Note 8’s camera takes two separate images when the user takes a photo. The onboard processing engine then combines both images and produces a high-quality, clear photo with a greater depth of field. Samsung’

Galaxy Note 8 battery comparison with Galaxy S8+ will leave you unimpressed

Image
Many Samsung fans were concerned about the battery sizes on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ earlier this year. It felt like Samsung had chosen a particularly small battery for devices that had very large displays. Samsung addressed those concerns through software optimization and fast wired/wireless charging. If you thought that the 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ were too small, the Galaxy Note 8’s battery will leave you unimpressed. It sits in the middle of both devices with a 3,300mAh battery . Samsung had to opt for a slightly smaller battery in order to accommodate the new phablet’s S Pen . Samsung has released the official battery stats for the Galaxy Note 8 . The numbers are based on devices tested in Europe. The Galaxy Note 8 obviously can’t match the Galaxy S8+ in terms of battery longevity but it comes close. You should expect the Galaxy Note 8 to last two hours less than the Galaxy S8+ in key departments such as talk time, video playback, i

Cheaper Galaxy Note 8 with 4GB RAM might be launched in China

Image
The Galaxy Note 8 is the first smartphone from Samsung to ship with 6GB of RAM globally. Samsung has previously released variants of its flagships with 6GB of RAM. However, they have largely been limited to select markets. The Galaxy Note 8 is an expensive smartphone. It costs north of $900 in the United States and over 1,000 euro in several European markets. If a new leak is to be believed, Samsung might launch a cheaper Galaxy Note 8 with 4GB of RAM. The leak comes from TENAA, a certification agency in China. The China-specific variants of the Galaxy Note 8 bearing model numbers SM-N9508 and SM-N9500 have been listed. It’s expected that Samsung might launch the 4GB variant alongside the standard 6GB variant. The cost-cutting appears to be limited to the RAM only as all other specifications will remain the same. The standard variant with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage is expected to cost ¥6,288 or $945. The 4GB RAM with 64GB variant is expected to cost around $100 less than the s
