Android 8.1 Oreo Now Rolling Out To Nokia 5 & Nokia 6 (2017)

Image
HMD Global on Friday started rolling out the Android 8.1 Oreo update to all international variants of the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) , the company's Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas revealed. As has been the case with the Finnish firm's previous releases of new Android versions, the latest software package designed for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) is meant to be introduced on a global level in a gradual manner and will likely take several weeks until it's distributed to all eligible units of the two mid-range smartphones. The firmware should also ship with the March Android security patch, as suggested by several owners of the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) who claim they have already received the new software. The update will add battery saving navigation buttons to the operating system implementation of the two devices, in addition to introducing a redesigned Settings app and a revamped Power menu meant to be more intuitive to navigate. Both the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (20

Google is testing some UI tweaks for a 2018 Pixel Launcher redesign

Image
Google has never been one to shy away from shipping hidden, in-development code inside production software. It's one of those little things about the web titan than can put a smile on any enthusiastic developer or modder's face and is typically how we get early clues about upcoming features and design changes. Old Pixel Launcher home • New Pixel Launcher home This time around, one of the guys over at XDA managed to unearth some UI tweaks in the latest official Pixel Launcher APK. These are subtle, but still quite noticeable and, for now, affect the Google search bar. The biggest apparent difference being that instead of appearing as one solid element, the new design has the voice search icon separated out into its own little bubble. The developer parameters associated with the new look have reasonably telling names: pixel_2018_qsb_use_two_bubbles pixel_2018_qsb_mic_stroke_width_dp pixel_2018_qsb_mic_opacity So, there is little doubt that Google is planning at l

Cryptocurrencies Boosted TSMC’s March Sales To $3.43B: Report

Image
Cryptocurrency mining and related technologies boosted the sales of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) this month, DigiTimes reports, citing industry watchers following the chipmaker. The firm's March sales are now expected to reach the equivalent of $3.43 billion, with the majority of that figure being attributed to 12nm and 16nm chips ordered by NVIDIA and Chinese Bitcoin mining company Bitmain. Besides its cryptocurrency operations, NVIDIA is also seeking to leverage the ordered chips to support its gaming device portfolio, sources claim. The American tech giant provides the 20nm Tegra X1 chips Nintendo uses to power its Switch portable gaming console whose revision is rumored to be coming next year. The improved version of the console is also expected to utilize an NVIDIA-made module manufactured with TSMC's process technology. TSMC is now planning to start shipping its 7nm chips to Apple in the second quarter of the year, with that product series being lik

Snapchat Maker Continues Cost Cuts, 100 More People Laid Off

Image
Snapchat maker Snap continued its cost-cutting efforts earlier this week, having laid off approximately 100 more employees, Bloomberg reports, citing people close to the company. The Venice, Los Angeles-based firm has been downsizing numerous divisions since September and has been widely reported to be planning its largest job cuts  to date this spring, with the latest development being attributed to that new frugal business strategy. The new layoffs are understood to have solely affected the company's advertising unit responsible for generating sales, with Snap previously cutting roles in its content and engineering teams. Industry insiders claim the new round of layoffs is also meant to be the final cost-cutting step in Snap's restructuring plan that the firm established late last year. The ephemeral messaging service provider acknowledged some downsizing took place in recent times, with Chief Strategy Officer Imran Khan saying the move will allow the company's units t

Paris through the eyes of the Huawei P20 Pro

Image
Sometimes things don't go exactly to plan. Like when Richard Yu went off-script at CES to rant about the U.S. carrier issues Huawei is facing or when the company arranged a Parisian bicycle tour to show off what the Huawei P20 Pro camera could do and it was cold and raining. While we all learned just how water-resistant the P20 Pro is that day, the photos we got weren't quite as sunny and picturesque as we all might have liked. But the P20 Pro camera still impressed. From its impressive 5x hybrid zoom to its incredible ability to pluck out light and detail from near total darkness, the days we spent in Paris with the device were among the most exciting we've had as far as smartphone photography goes.  The night mode is a highlight feature, allowing you to take a four-second handheld long exposure, and especially at night, it makes a huge difference to your overall photos. The desire to see what the Huawei P20 Pro camera could do in different environments was excitin

Crunchyroll’s first game is unsurprisingly based on an anime

Image
Crunchyroll announced DanMachi – Memoria Freese, the first game under its Crunchyroll Games brand. The game is based on the DanMachi anime. Memoria Freese is now available as a free download. It might have had sketchy beginnings, but Crunchyroll has grown to become a legitimate anime streaming and manga reading network. It would make sense, then, that the service's first game is based on manga-turned-anime series Is It Wrong to Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon? At its core, DanMachi – Memoria Freese is a 2D dungeon-crawler RPG that lets you build, upgrade, and customize your party and includes turn-based battles. The game features an original storyline based on the anime's first season, though I have not played enough of the game to decipher what that storyline is. The game certainly looks great, however, and ran with little to no hiccups on my Galaxy S9 Plus . Even the voice acting, which can easily be an afterthought in a free-to-play title, is up to pa

Could your future smartphone be made of wood?

Image
Smartphones are dreamily thin, composed mostly of metal and glass materials which aren't always well-suited to the rough and tumble of everyday life. The industry is always on the lookout for new materials. We've seen a progression from plastic to aluminum and aerospace-aluminum alloys, to stainless steel, ceramics, and even titanium reinforcements. While metal designs tend to be highly durable and enhance heat dissipation from warm processors and batteries, they struggle with shielding. The metallic backs on phones — such as the classic HTC M8 and M9 phones — prevent wireless charging from working and reduce the sensitivity of antennas. Ceramics are another good material option with helpful advantages like superior hardness to resist scratching. They also tend to be more brittle, which can be a problem on a device dropped as frequently as a smartphone. We have seen companies dabble with wood on smartphones in the past. Motorola's 2014 Moto X offered a wood

Google will use machine learning to predict Final Four winner

Image
Google will use machine learning to predict the winners of the NCAA Final Four. Once it has its prediction ready, it will post an ad during halftime announcing who it thinks will win. Google will use real-time data from the game as well as historical sports data to generate its predictions. If you've placed any bets on the upcoming NCAA Final Four college basketball games, you might want to talk to Google before placing any more. That's because Google will be using machine learning to determine which teams will win the Final Four games, processing both past data and data that's happening in real time as the games progress. We can all agree that no matter how lucky you think you are when it comes to predicting basketball games, Google's machine learning systems are probably better. Google teamed up with NCAA late last year to load almost a hundred years of sports data into Google Cloud Platform . Using that data combined with real-time

What does a dollar-saving coupon plugin really cost?

Image
What does a free coupon really cost? Internet commerce practically runs on coupons, coupon plugin, vouchers, and promotional codes, with a number of dedicated sites, platforms, and tools like Honey and  InvisibleHand to help you save at checkout. It's a marketing tactic dating back to the 19th century, when  Asa Candler used coupons  to help popularize the beverage company he bought, "distributing thousands of coupons for a complimentary glass of Coca-Cola." Obviously Candler's efforts were a success — perhaps you've heard of Coca-Cola — and today there are very few e-retailers that don't offer the chance to "apply a code" before buying something online. Plenty of savvy users take this opportunity to do a quick Google search for an easy way to save some money, with millions of codes posted and available for free on a multitude of websites. More savvy online shoppers don't even search for coupons anymore, but use a coupon plugin loaded int

Samsung Galaxy S5 + 6 months service under $200!

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a phone close to my heart. Android Authority is your cutting edge guide to the latest Android devices , but it doesn't mean we can't get a bit sentimental now and again. Why are you getting all misty eyed? I admit it's strange, but I love this phone. There's one dutifully sitting on the desk next to me right now. When the S8 came out, I stuck with the S5 . When I had it stolen in South America, I sourced a new one in the next city. It's the phone for me. Ok it's not going to give you the mind-blowing levels of functionality that the new S9 can boast, but it still holds its own in most of the metrics .  Samsung Galaxy S5 Spec: Android 5.0 Lollipop 2.5 GHz Quad-Core Qualcomm® Snapdragon processor Rear camera: 16 megapixel; Auto Focus with Flash & Zero Shutter Lag, BIS Front camera: 2 megapixel, Full HD recording @30fps with Zero Shutter Lag, BIS Screen: 5.1 inch Full HD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080) display, 4
