Android 8.1 Oreo Now Rolling Out To Nokia 5 & Nokia 6 (2017)

HMD Global on Friday started rolling out the Android 8.1 Oreo update to all international variants of the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017), the company's Chief Product Officer Juho Sarvikas revealed. As has been the case with the Finnish firm's previous releases of new Android versions, the latest software package designed for the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) is meant to be introduced on a global level in a gradual manner and will likely take several weeks until it's distributed to all eligible units of the two mid-range smartphones. The firmware should also ship with the March Android security patch, as suggested by several owners of the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) who claim they have already received the new software.

The update will add battery saving navigation buttons to the operating system implementation of the two devices, in addition to introducing a redesigned Settings app and a revamped Power menu meant to be more intuitive to navigate. Both the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 (2017) will be capable of displaying the battery percentages of connected Bluetooth devices following the installation of the new firmware as well, according to the official changelog accompanying HMD's over-the-air update. No other major user-facing changes are part of the software package, though the company previously hinted it may introduce additional improvements to the default Camera app of its two mid-rangers.

HMD recently embraced Google's Android One program in a relatively comprehensive manner, having vowed all of its upcoming handsets will ship with a vanilla version of the world's most popular operating system. The company also promised to support the Android Go initiative, having already started doing so with the launch of the Nokia 1, its first smartphone running that lightweight version of Google's platform. All new Nokia devices boast support for Project Treble, a reworked OS framework that separates Android's main code base from vendor-specific implementations, thus allowing original equipment manufacturers to develop and test software updates in a swifter manner. HMD has already been one of the fastest adopters of new Android versions and security patches on the planet, so the existence of Project Treble support on its new products shouldn't significantly impact the rate and frequency of their future updates, especially since they're all running stock Android builds.
